Firefighter Charles Morton (39) killed while fighting the Southern California wildfires

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- A procession was held Tuesday to honor the firefighter who died while battling the El Dorado Fire burning in the San Bernardino National Forest.

Charles Morton, 39, was a Big Bear Interagency Hotshot squad boss who had been with the Forest Service for 14 years out of an 18-year firefighting career.

He was killed while conducting fire suppression on the blaze last Thursday, Sept. 17.

The procession included a U.S. Forest Service honor guard, along with the California Highway Patrol, escorting his body from San Bernardino to a mortuary in Orange County.

The family released a statement: "Charlie is survived by his wife and daughter, his parents, two brothers, cousins, and friends. He's loved and will be missed. May he rest easy in heaven with his baby boy."

The El Dorado Fire erupted Sept. 5, with officials linking the cause of the blaze to a pyrotechnic device used at a gender reveal party.

At least 10 structures have been destroyed by the blaze, which has burned more than 22,000 acres with 60% containment.

The firefighter killed while battling the El Dorado fire in San Bernardino County was identified Monday as Charles Morton, a 14-year veteran with the U.S. Forest Service who led the Big Bear Interagency Hotshot Squad.

Morton died Sept. 17. He was 39.

Morton served for 14 years with the U.S. Forest Service, beginning with the Truckee Interagency Hotshots in the Tahoe National Forest, then the Mill Creek Interagency Hotshots, Engine 31, Engine 19 and the Big Bear Interagency Hotshots in the San Bernardino National Forest.

?Charlie was a well-respected leader who was always there for his squad and his crew at the toughest times,? Vicki Christiansen, U.S. Forest Service chief, said in a statement. ?Our hearts go out to Charlie?s loved ones, co-workers, friends and the Big Bear Hotshots. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.?

Morton is survived by his wife, daughter, parents and two brothers.

The El Dorado fire erupted 12 days before Morton?s death, when a family threw a gender-reveal party in a park near Yucaipa, igniting a pyrotechnic device that emitted colored smoke. Southern California was in the throes of a record-setting heat wave that weekend, and the flames raced across dry, grass-covered hillsides and into the San Bernardino National Forest.

The El Dorado fire has burned 22,500 acres in San Bernardino and Riverside counties and was 60% contained as of Monday evening. Ten structures have been destroyed and another six damaged.

They had a procession for him yesterday. Just think, this dude is dead because some morons thought it would be cool to use pyrotechnics to announce the gender of thier baby. The only saving grace is that they can be charged with it now. People are such assholes.

And that Same Firefighter was on his way to rescue other people that were reported missing because they were running away from wildfires and got killed too. Those morons have to consider that there are other people that ended up missing or dead due to their act not just the death of a Hero like Charles Morton.

They need to make a huge example of these people and give them the absolute maximum sentence possible. How many of these type of bullshit gender reveal things have we now heard about that killed people and destroyed lives, just to have another excuse to demand gifts?

What kind of assholes need pyrotechnics at a gender reveal party? Pop a damn balloon.

I went to double gender reveal party and they shot at a target that released a color powder. It was loud and stupid.

Selfish idiots. That's who. Contrary to popular belief, California isn't a state overrun with mostly Liberal, intelligent people. In the major cities, for the most part, but we have our fair share of redneck idiots that refuse to wear masks, eat Trump's asshole and pull shit like this.

A Funeral is held for Charles Morton who was killed in fighting the El Dorado Fire.

A memorial honoring a firefighter who died battling the El Dorado Fire was held in San Bernardino Friday morning.

Charles Morton, 39, died Sept. 17 while fighting the blaze as a squad boss for the Big Bear Hotshot Crew, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The blaze, which was sparked by a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device used at a gender-reveal party in the Yucaipa area of the San Bernardino National Forest, is now 81% contained at 22,604 acres.

The service was held at The Rock Church, 2345 S. Waterman Ave., where members from several fire departments gathered outside to pay their respects to the fallen firefighter.

The San Diego native started his career in 2002 and joined the San Bernardino National Forest in 2007. He worked for Mill Creek Interagency Hotshots and Big Bear Interagency Hotshots.

He left behind a fianc?e, daughter, his parents, two brothers, cousins and friends.

During the service, loved ones said he loved nature and being outdoors.

Morton was remembered as a friend with a good heart, a dedicated family man and an honorable firefighter.

His fianc?e Monica recalled that when she asked him why he had proposed, he got teary eyed.

“He grabbed me, he looked me in my eyes and he says, ‘Moni, it’s because you are the best part of me, and you make me better everyday,’” she said.

Friday’s service also included an honor cordon outside the church, the Posting of Colors, a hotshot prayer, a bell ceremony, presentations to the family and Charlie’s “Last Call,” a tradition honoring firefighters who who have died in the line of duty with a final radio call, recognizing the end of his watch.

Attendance to the service was limited to invited guests to adhere to social distancing guidelines, officials said.

Fellow firefighters and other officials honored Morton during a procession from San Bernardino to Orange Tuesday.

Cards and condolences can be sent to the Morton family at P.O. Box 63564, Irvine, CA 92602. For FedEx and/or UPS: 1 League # 63564, Irvine, CA 92602 in care of “Support for Charlie.”

A GoFundMe page has also been set up.

Autopsy from the fire investigation but not shocking.

. Charles Morton, squad boss of the Big Bear Interagency Hot Shot Crew, died on Sept. 17 in Angelus Oaks when he was apparently “burned over by the fire,” according to a report released by the U.S. Forest Service.

Cal Fire officials were briefed on the conclusion a few days after the incident, but it was not made public until this week on the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned website. Morton, who had worked with the National Forest Fire Service for 14 years, left behind a wife and a daughter. He was 39. The two-paragraph Sept. 24 report prepared by William Avey, coordinated response protocol team leader, said Morton died while conducting suppression efforts.

“Charlie was a well-respected leader who was always there for his squad and his crew at the toughest times,” U.S. Forest Service Chief Vicki Christiansen said in a statement released after the death was announced. “Our hearts go out to Charlie’s loved ones, coworkers, friends and the Big Bear Hotshots. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”

Born on Aug. 7, 1981, in San Diego, Morton started his career in 2002 as corpsman with the California Conservation Corps at the Butte Fire Center in Magalia, moving to the 2006 fire season with Firestorm Fire Suppression in Chico. His Forest Service career began in 2006 with the Truckee Interagency Hotshots on the Tahoe National Forest.

Morton then joined the San Bernardino National Forest in 2007 and worked on both the Front Country and Mountaintop Ranger Districts, for the Mill Creek Interagency Hotshots, Engine 31, Engine 19, and the Big Bear Interagency Hotshots.
