Note this is an ongoing search for the suspect(s) in the Los Angeles area.

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- Two Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies are "fighting for their lives" after they were shot in the head in an apparent ambush at the Metro station in Compton, officials say.

The incident happened Saturday at the Metro Blue Line station at Willowbrook Avenue and Compton Boulevard around 7 p.m. The location is a short distance from the Compton sheriff's station.

The department tweeted: "One male deputy and one female deputy were ambushed as they sat in their patrol vehicle. Both sustained multiple gunshot wounds and are in critical condition. They are both currently undergoing surgery. The suspect is still at large."

They were rushed to a local hospital.

Surveillance video of the shooting shows the suspect ambush the deputies as they sat in the patrol car.

A person clad in dark clothing walks up to the parked vehicle at the Metro station, approaches the window on the passenger's side and fires several times at close range. The suspect then runs off on foot.

The surveillance video can be viewed here. Warning: Footage of the shooting may be disturbing to some viewers.

The department tweeted: "Moments ago, 2 of our Sheriff Deputies were shot in Compton and were transported to a local hospital. They are both still fighting for their lives, so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers."

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A massive search for a gunman is underway as two Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies are "fighting for their lives" after they were shot in the head in an ambush at the Metro station in Compton, officials say.

The incident happened Saturday at the Metro Blue Line station at Willowbrook Avenue and Compton Boulevard around 7 p.m. The location is a short distance from the Compton sheriff's station.

Surveillance video of the shooting shows the suspect ambush the deputies as they sat in the patrol vehicle.

A man clad in dark clothing walks up to the parked vehicle at the Metro station, approaches the window on the passenger's side and fires several times at close range. The suspect then runs off on foot. One deputy is seen emerging from the passenger side and stumbling around on foot for several seconds before the video ends.

Both deputies sustained multiple gunshot wounds and underwent surgery at a local hospital. They were described as alive but in critical condition.

"That was a cowardly act," Sheriff Alex Villanueva said. "The two deputies were doing their job, minding their own business, watching out for the safety of the people on the train."

"To see somebody just walk up and start shooting on them. It pisses me off. It dismays me at the same time. There's no pretty way to say it."

One deputy was described as a 31-year-old mother of a 6-year-old boy. Her husband came to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood after the shooting.

The other deputy was a 24-year-old man and his girlfriend and parents came to hospital.

Villanueva said he swore in both deputies to office just 14 months ago in the same class.

Officials were not able to get a detailed description of the shooter other than a man. Officials cautioned that the surveillance video released from the scene uses a fisheye lens so the suspect's height and weight may be slightly distorted from reality.

The department tweeted: "Moments ago, 2 of our Sheriff Deputies were shot in Compton and were transported to a local hospital. They are both still fighting for their lives, so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers."

The department had at least 14 homicide detectives on scene to investigate along with forensic specialists, the Special Enforcement Bureau, K-9 units and other department personnel.

President Donald Trump also reacted to the shooting, retweeting the sheriff's department video and commenting: "Animals that must be hit hard!"

Compton Mayor Aja Brown posted a statement on Instagram: "I am devastated to learn of the tragedy that occurred in our city tonight. Both deputies and their families will remain in our prayers."

A small crowd, including some apparent demonstrators, gathered near the hospital in Lynwood where the deputies were transported. Witnesses say members in the group were chanting anti-law enforcement slogans and at one point tried to get inside the hospital.

Deputies blocked off streets in the area and are searching for the suspect.

Massive manhunt launched for shooting suspect

Dozens of deputies were searching the area near the Compton metro station where a lone gunman ambushed two sheriff's deputies, leaving them in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.

The department had at least 14 homicide detectives on scene to investigate along with forensic specialists, the Special Enforcement Bureau, K-9 units and other department personnel.

It appears a radio reporter was caught up in the chaos. Sheriff's deputies were seen tackling a woman, later identified as reporter Josie Huang for 89.3 KPCC who had been covering the earlier press conference, to the ground and then taking her into custody. She appeared to be wearing media credentials as deputies took her into custody.

Hours after her arrest, Huang tweeted that she was headed home and said she would share more about the incident "after a little rest."

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call LASD homicide detectives at (323)890-5500.

Vanessa Bryant, the widow of late NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, criticized the Los Angeles County sheriff for challenging current Lakers star LeBron James to match a reward offered in the ambush shooting of two deputies over the weekend.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva suggested during an interview Monday that James should double a $200,000 reward offered for information leading to the gunman’s arrest.

“This challenge is to LeBron James,” Villanueva said during a radio interview with 790KABC. “I want you to match that and double that reward. Because I know you care about law enforcement. You expressed a very, very interesting statement about your perspective on race relations and on officer involved shootings and the impact it has on the African American community, and I appreciate that. But likewise, we need to appreciate the respect for life goes across professions, across races, creeds. And I’d like to see LeBron James step up to the plate and double that.”

LeBron James had not commented on Sheriff Villanueva’s interview as of Tuesday afternoon.

Vanessa Bryant, who is suing the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after deputies allegedly shared photos from the helicopter crash site where Kobe, daughter Gianna, and seven others died, responded in her Instagram story.

Bryant incorporated screenshots of tweets from a Twitter user named @ElanMaree including one that read:

“He shouldn’t be challenging LeBron James to match a reward or ‘to step up to the plate.’ He couldn’t even ‘step up to the plate’ and hold his deputies accountable for photographing dead children.”

    @ELANMAREE
How can he talk about trusting the system? His sheriff’s dept. couldn’t be trusted to secure Kobe Bryant’s helicopter crash scene, his deputies took and shared graphic photos of crash victims. Vanessa Bryant is suing them. https://t.co/X48h2h4MNv

Another tweet questioned how Sheriff Villanueva could ask athletes and others to trust the criminal justice system when “His sheriff’s dept. couldn’t be trusted to secure Kobe Bryant’s helicopter crash scene.”

Bryant also included a quote from Mayor Eric Garcetti condemning the shootings of the two deputies, adding the message: “Not all deputies are bad apples. Prayers for the 2 deputies that were shot.”

Both deputies were shot in the head at point-blank range while they sat in their patrol car near a Compton metro station over the weekend.

According to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, protesters blocked the entrance and exit of the hospital emergency room where the deputies were being treated Saturday night, and at least one yelled “We hope they die.”

The officers were listed in stable condition Monday and are expected to survive.

This has been all over the news out here. The Deputies haven't been named, but there's video footage and a screenshot from an incident where the cops killed a man in South LA where it looks like one of the officers was on the scene. Not involved in the shooting, but there afterward. They're wondering if that's a motive.

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- An ex-con arrested earlier this month in connection to a carjacking in Lynwood was charged Wednesday with attempted murder in the ambush shooting of two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies who were critically wounded while sitting in their patrol car near a Metro station in Compton.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Deonte Lee Murray, is set to be arraigned Wednesday at the Compton courthouse on two counts each of attempted murder of a peace officer and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the Sept. 12 attack on the deputies.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said "we saw the worst of humanity -- a cowardly act where a suspect ambushed and shot and attempted to kill two of our deputies.''

"This cowardly ambush was followed by bystanders celebrating and cheering that the deputies had been shot, and that followed at the hospital -- the sanctity, the quiet sanctity of the hospital -- with protesters cheering and chanting for the deputies to die,'' Villanueva said. "These acts and that day, I will not forget it, and it represents the worst in humanity and it shocked the whole nation. And that evening, I said we will find this man. And I can report today, we have found our suspect.''

The suspect had already been charged with one felony count each of carjacking, second-degree robbery and assault with a semi-automatic firearm -- along with gang and gun allegations -- involving a Sept. 1 carjacking in Compton, in which he allegedly shot a 51-year-old man in the leg with a high-powered rifle and stole his black Mercedes-Benz. He pleaded not guilty to those charges and has remained behind bars since his Sept. 15 arrest.

Murray, who authorities say is associated with multiple gangs, could face a potential life prison term if convicted of the charges, according to District Attorney Jackie Lacey. Sheriff's Homicide Bureau Capt. Kent Wegener, who detailed the investigation, did not suggest a specific motive for the attack "other than the fact that he obviously hates policemen, and he wants them dead."

Murray allegedly fled the scene of the deputies' shooting in the stolen black sedan and discarded a pistol while being pursued by sheriff's investigators prior to a standoff in Lynwood, according to Wegener. The pistol was the same one that had been used to shoot the sheriff's deputies in Compton and was "conclusively linked through forensic testing'' to Murray, he said.

At the time, Villanueva told multiple media outlets that there was no connection between the ambush of the deputies and the carjacking suspect, who was arrested after a chase and standoff that ended in Lynwood.

Investigators initially had no evidence that Murray -- who has prior convictions for sales and possession of narcotics, firearm possession by a felon or addict, receiving stolen property, burglary and terrorist threats -- was responsible for the attack on the deputies, according to Wegener.

"We knew that he was a violent offender, was accused of stealing a black Mercedes-Benz and lived in the area. However, there was insufficient evidence to support an arrest, much less a criminal filing for the charge of attempted murder on a peace officer and to label him in the media as the person responsible,'' the sheriff's homicide captain said.

"Additionally, bringing the public focus on him at that point of the investigation may have influenced the pending witness interviews and further compromised the mission of solving the attempted murder of the deputies,'' he said. "As the investigation progressed, we gathered sufficient evidence to substantiate not only the arrest but the filing of criminal charges in this case.''

Villanueva noted that there was also an "outpouring of support'' from across the nation, including both presidential candidates and people from all walks of life.

"Sometimes from the worst comes the best and this is an example of that,'' the sheriff said.

The deputies were shot while sitting in a marked patrol car at the Metro Blue Line station located at 275 N. Willowbrook Ave. in Compton. Surveillance video shows the gunman approaching the window on the passenger's side and firing several times at close range. The man then ran off on foot. One deputy was seen emerging from the passenger side and stumbling around on foot for several seconds before the video ends.

"Despite being critically injured, the deputies valiantly cared for each other's wounds and safety, communicated their location and plight to others, and tactically prepared for another attack,'' according to a statement from the department. "The suspect fled the scene, and a monetary reward was offered for information leading to their arrest and conviction.''

Court papers identified the deputies as Claudia Apolinar and Emmanuel Perez. The deputies graduated together from the sheriff's academy 14 months ago. They are at home recovering while Murray is held on $6 million bail.

RELATED: Compton deputy shooting: New photos show female deputy recovering in hospital from ambush

In recent weeks, demonstrators have marched to protest fatal shootings in the South L.A. area, where deputies killed a Black man on Aug. 31 and a Black teenager in 2018.

After the ambush, a handful of protesters gathered outside the hospital where the deputies were treated and tried to block the emergency room entrance. Videos from the scene recorded protesters shouting expletives at police and at least one yelling "I hope they ... die."

Villanueva said those who allegedly cheered at the scene after the deputies were shot and those who wished death on the deputies showed the "worst of humanity."

Wednesday's announcement follows a separate, seemingly unprovoked assault on another law enforcement officer in the L.A. area.

An L.A. police officer was attacked Saturday night inside the Harbor Community station in San Pedro. The assailant was recorded on surveillance video as he knocked the officer to the ground inside the station, pistol-whipped him with his own gun and pointed it at his chest. The officer is recovering from his injuries.

Anyone with information on the Compton case can call the sheriff's tip line at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips can be left for L.A. Crime Stoppers at 800-222- TIPS (8477) or at lacrimestoppers.org.
