I know. I was looking for the hiker that died due to heat and I saw this and thought what an odd place to die.

If he was hypoxic the hyperbaric chamber can be a desperate attempt to save his life

....and that's why a lot of Black people don't swim. I'm kidding of course, but this is scary.
    RIP.

That fits exactly. He was probably scuba diving and started showing signs and was taken to the hyperbaric chamber for treatment, but didn't make it. It happens all the time. The hyperbaric chamber is used as a last ditch effort for scuba divers who get the bends or air embolisms, but it doesn't always work.

ETA: It could also be free diving, same difference.

Wondering if this could be him. The date is right and he was found alive but unconscious, so they could have tried to save him with the chamber. The age says 40 and he is 41, but we see the age be off a little bit all the time in news stories and be corrected by the ME.

A recreational diver who fell unconscious while swimming near an oil platform called Island Eureka 8 miles off the coast of Long Beach was rescued Saturday morning.

Multiple rescue agencies responded to a call about the unconscious diver at about 9:45 a.m., U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Benjamin McIntyre said.

Here's some discussion about the diver in the story above and what happened, assuming it's Eric:

ETA: yes, this is him. On the last page of the discussion they link Eric's GFM.

This isn't him, but here's some videos of what diving this rig is like.
