CONTEXT...and you and I both know it. Plus, some of those are so old and the White Supremacists have only recently adopted this as theirs, so your argument with those pics doesn't even make sense. It WAS a perfectly innocent and benign signal that everyone used, until the White Supremacists claimed and it and attached their own meaning to it. So when you're standing with the Proud Boys after murdering someone in a race riot...yeah, it doesn't just mean "ok", and we all know that.

Also, I can also play devils advocate. I can pretend along with you that this kid was just saying "ok", however he's hanging with the Proud Boys and using a symbol that at best can be misinterpreted as being White Supremacist, and putting himself in a really bad situation. This kid should have his guns taken away forever and kept from becoming a police officer based just on the fact that he's dumber than dirt and a total idiot...that is IF you were to pretend that he didn't murder someone because he was pissing his pants because he got in over his head wanting to flex his muscle to Black people.

I realize some of those pictures don't apply but using outdated pictures to tell a story works for the media so I thought I 'd work it here too. BTW, I don't support the "Kenosha kid" whatsoever nor the Proud Boys, nor BLM, nor Trumpers, nor Biden's Boys, nor Antifa... In fact, I don't support anyone and haven't for the last few elections. All today's politicians and activists are solely driven by their own self interests. The extreme left and extreme right have gone full circle and now touch each other because the pendulum doesn't swing back and forth, it spins full circle and is going faster and faster because "everyone's right" and "everyone else is wrong". Today it's this "rightwing group", tomorrow that "leftwing group", the day after that it'll be another "group."

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — Two police officers who were on the scene when a white officer shot and partially paralyzed a Black man in Wisconsin, triggering several nights of violent protests, have returned to duty, according to police officials.

The update announced Wednesday comes as Officer Rusten Sheskey, who shot Jacob Blake seven times on Aug. 23 in Kenosha, remains on administrative leave while a police review board examines the case.

Sheskey was placed on administrative leave following Blake’s shooting along with Officers Vincent Arenas and Brittany Meronek. Arenas and Meronek returned to duty Jan. 20, according to a police statement issued Wednesday.

“Officers Arenas and Meronek were not charged with a crime and after review by the Kenosha County District Attorney and an independent investigator, former Madison Police Chief Noble Wray, the actions taken by the officers were reasonable and justified,” the statement said.

Hundreds of people were arrested and multiple businesses were destroyed during protests following Blake’s shooting. Kyle Rittenhouse, a white teenager from Antioch, Illinois, is accused of fatally shooting two men and wounding a third during one night of violence.

The officers were trying to arrest Blake on an outstanding warrant when a pocketknife fell from his pants during a scuffle. Blake said he picked it up before heading to a vehicle to drive away with two of his children in the back seat. He said he was prepared to surrender once he put the knife in the vehicle.

Sheskey told investigators that he feared that Blake was going to stab him, so he opened fire. Blake family attorney Ben Crump, however, has questioned whether Blake threatened Sheskey with a knife, saying “nowhere does the video footage show a knife extended and aimed to establish the requisite intent.”

Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley on Jan. 5 declined to file charges against Sheskey, concluding he couldn’t disprove the officer’s contention that he acted in self-defense.

    KENOSHA, Wis. —
Prosecutors said accused Kenosha protest shooter Kyle Rittenhouse has violated the conditions of his release.

A judge allowed Rittenhouse, now 18, of Antioch, Illinois, to be released in November on $2 million cash bail.

He's currently awaiting trial for the shooting deaths of two men who were protesting the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

Prosecutors filed a motion Wednesday saying the court was unable to deliver a hearing notice for Rittenhouse at the address he listed as his home on his release paperwork.

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The notice was returned to the court because a forwarding address was not known.

Prosecutors wrote in their filing Rittenhouse failed to notify the court of a change of address or telephone number within 48 hours.

They asked the judge to increase Rittenhouse's bail by $200,000 for the violation and issue a warrant for his arrest.

Prosecutors said they were unable to monitor Rittenhouse's whereabouts because he failed to notify them that he moved.

Rittenhouse's cash bond was raised from online supporters.

He has claimed he acted in self-defense.

Prosecutors wrote in their filing Wednesday that Rittenhouse "demonstrated his carefree attitude by going to a bar immediately after his arraignment on Jan. 5, 2021, and drinking 3 beers in the company of known 'Proud Boys' while flashing white supremacist signs and wearing a 'Free as (expletive) shirt."

Kenosha detectives said they went to the apartment Rittenhouse listed as his address and a man said he had rented the apartment since Dec. 15 and Rittenhouse no longer lived there.

Prosecutors said Rittenhouse failed to correct the address on a document signed Jan. 22.

Rittenhouse's defense attorney filed a response to the prosecutor's motion, objecting to the bond increase.

Mark Richards said Rittenhouse and his family have received death threats since the Kenosha shootings.

He said they moved into a "safe house" and deleted their social media accounts.

Richards claimed upon Rittenhouse's release, he was told not to disclose the location of his "safe house."

He said a member of the defense team contacted prosecutors to provide Rittenhouse's new address if it was filed under seal because of safety concerns.

    Play Video
Richards said the prosecutor refused that request.

He said he would provide Rittenhouse's current address if it were kept confidential by the court.

Prosecutors said that decision would be left up to a judge.

Rittenhouse's next scheduled court appearance is March 10 but a hearing on the new motion could be held sooner.

If convicted, Rittenhouse faces up to life in prison.

KENOSHA, Wis. - Prosecutors asked a judge Wednesday, Feb. 3 for a new arrest warrant for Kyle Rittenhouse -- the Illinois teen charged with shooting three people, killing two of them, during an anti-police protest in Wisconsin after he apparently violated his bond conditions.

The Kenosha County District Attorney's Office said it doesn't know where Rittenhouse is -- and that's a bond violation. The 18-year-old's legal team filed a response, saying he and his family are at a "Safe House" due to threats.

Rittenhouse posted $2 million bond in November, listing his address as his family home in Antioch, Illinois. When detectives went to that address on Feb. 2, court documents show, it was found he has not lived there for months.

Kenosha County Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger said the address discrepancies is serious as he wrote in the motion: "rarely does our community see accused murderers roaming about freely."

Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time of the shootings, is charged with multiple counts, including homicide, in connection with the protests in August. Prosecutors allege he had responded to a militia's call to protect businesses in Kenosha and opened fire on three men, killing Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber and wounding Gaige Grosskreutz. Rittenhouse has maintained he acted in self-defense.

Rittenhouse surrendered to police the day after the shootings but was released after he posted a $2 million bond. Conservative groups covered the expense.

Binger went on to write: "It is important to note that the $2 million came from a dubious Internet fundraising campaign, and the defendant and his family did not post any money toward that bond. As a result, the defendant is free from custody with minimal incentive to comply with his bond conditions."

The prosecutors' motion asks the court to increase Rittenhouse's bond by $200,000. Rittenhouse's legal team argues the move was all about safety and asked the district attorney to keep the "Safe House" address private. The court filing includes an email from Binger, responding in part: "Unless you can provide me with a specific, tangible and imminent threat (or threats) that would justify secrecy in this case, I am not willing to agree to redact your client's address from the public record.

In addition to the request to increase Rittenhouse's bond, the motion asks the court to order Rittenhouse to update his address in writing with the clerk of court immediately.

The judge, Bruce Schroeder, will now have to rule on both parties' motions: the district attorney's motion to increase bond, and the defense's motion to keep Rittenhouse's address private.

A woman who answered the phone at the office of Rittenhouse's attorney, Mark Reynolds, had no comment Wednesday.

The court document filed on Wednesday, Feb. 3 reads in part:

"It is important to note that the $2 million came from a dubious Internet fundraising campaign, and the defendant and his family did not post any money toward that bond. As a result, the defendant is free from custody with minimal incentive to comply with his bond conditions. He posted no money so he has no financial stake in the bond. He is already facing the most serious possible criminal charges and life in prison, so in comparison, potential future criminal penalties are insignificant. Indeed, the defendant has already demonstrated his carefree attitude by going to a bar immediately after his arraignment on January 5, 2021 and drinking 3 beers in the company of known "Proud Boys" while flashing white supremacist signs and wearing a 'Free as (expletive)' shirt."

"Rarely does our community see accused murderers roaming about freely. As a result, the defendant’s bond requires him to update the Court in writing within 48 hours of any change of address or telephone number."

Apparently the police had gotten Kyle Rittenhouse former address while looking for Rittenhouse over bail issues.
    . ANTIOCH, Ill. ?
A judge on Thursday will decide whether accused Kenosha protest shooter Kyle Rittenhouse should be arrested again.

Prosecutors said he gave the court an address where he no longer lives.

The man who actually lives there said he unknowingly became part of this court battle.

He wasn't aware of who formerly lived there until detectives showed up at his door.

Rittenhouse, now 18, listed his address as an apartment in Antioch, Illinois, when he was arrested last year.

In reality, the teen who shot and killed two people on video during Kenosha protests had moved out.

And prosecutors said he didn't tell the court.

"We were shocked for obvious reasons," Aidan Earl said.

He and his girlfriend Anna Mueller and their roommates had no idea they moved in to Rittenhouse's former apartment.

Rittenhouse's defense team said he's staying at a safe house after receiving death threats.

Prosecutors said that puts the current occupants of the Antioch address at risk.

"We're realizing that our address is very public to whoever wants it," Mueller said. "There's been a lot of, 'OK, make sure the blinds stay closed, make sure those doors are locked, double-checking everything again.'"

Prosecutors want Rittenhouse arrested again and his bond upped $200,000.

Defense attorneys want Rittenhouse's address kept private.

Earl just wants to be left alone.

"No, we're not connected to Kyle Rittenhouse in any sort of way and he does not live here anymore. So hopefully people kind of leave us be," he said.

Rittenhouse is currently free on $2 million cash bail.

NORFOLK — The second in command of the Norfolk Police Department’s internal affairs unit has been fired after he made what the city manager called “egregious” comments praising Kyle Rittenhouse, the white man accused of shooting and killing protestors last year.

Those comments violated departmental policies and “erode the trust between the Norfolk Police Department and those they are sworn to serve,” City Manager Chip Filer said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

Filer and Police Chief Larry Boone did not say which specific policy Lt. William K. Kelly III violated. When asked, a police spokesman said he would check with the city attorney but did not respond further.

An anonymous donor in September gave $25 to the legal defense of Kyle Rittenhouse, but the donation came from Kelly’s official email address, according to data from the Christian crowdfunding website GiveSendGo that was hacked. The transparency group Distributed Denial of Secrets then shared the information with journalism organizations, including The Virginian-Pilot.

Kelly became an executive officer in Norfolk police’s internal affairs unit two months ago, according to his LinkedIn page. He began working for the department in 2002, city employment records show.

The city’s statement Tuesday said he “is afforded the right to appeal the (firing) in accordance with the City of Norfolk grievance procedure and applicable law.”
Clay Messick, a 15-year veteran officer and president of the local police union, called the decision to fire Kelly “disappointing,” saying he’s never seen an administrative investigation conducted “so hastily.”

“We were hoping for a full, transparent investigation,” he said, noting Kelly is not a member of the union. “But after 72 hours, I do not believe that is what we got.

“It is hard to call this fair.”

Rittenhouse’s case has become a rallying cry for right-wing activists, and the donation from Kelly’s email address carried the comment: “God bless. Thank you for your courage. Keep your head up. You’ve done nothing wrong.”

It continued: “Every rank and file police officer supports you. Don’t be discouraged by actions of the political class of law enforcement leadership.”

After the story broke, Boone said Kelly had been reassigned. The chief also said he’d launched “an administrative investigation” into the allegations against Kelly.

“A police department cannot do its job when the public loses trust with those whose duty is to serve and protect them,” Boone said Tuesday in the statement announcing Kelly’s firing. “We do not want perceptions of any individual officer to undermine the relations between the Norfolk Police Department and the community.”

Kelly has not responded to a message sent to his work email on Friday. On Tuesday, The Pilot left a message at a landline number listed for Kelly; no one responded.

A veteran Norfolk officer told The Pilot the allegations against Kelly were “absolutely crazy” and threatened to further widen racial divisions within the department. The officer, whom The Pilot is not naming because department policy tightly restricts when police can talk to the media, called Kelly a nice, unassuming guy — a “golden boy.”

“I never would have figured,” he said.

The officer said Kelly’s assertion that “every rank and file officer supports you” is just flat out wrong. “Many of us here are pissed off because he doesn’t speak for us and those views are certainly not mine. We are waiting to see how this is handled by the administration.”

In a statement, Mayor Kenny Alexander on Friday called the allegations against Kelly “alarming and by all means not consistent with the values of our city.” Alexander said he looked forward to reviewing the police department’s report on the accusations.

Less than two hours after Norfolk officials announced Kelly’s firing, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd. Jurors found Chauvin killed Floyd by jamming his knee into the neck of Floyd for the better part of 10 minutes as Floyd repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe, lost consciousness and then died.

Floyd’s death on Memorial Day sparked protests and riots around the country. It also forced Americans to reckon with the inequities and oppression the criminal justice system continues to wreak on Black people and other people of color.

Rittenhouse, now 18, is accused of murdering two people and seriously injuring a third at a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August. He’s pleaded not guilty and claimed he shot the three men in self defense.

The Guardian first reported Kelly’s donation to Rittenhouse and the GiveSendGo data breach. The leak revealed police officers and other public officials around the country donated money to fundraisers for alleged vigilantes, far-right activists and fellow officers accused of shooting Black people.

The beneficiaries of donations from public officials include Rittenhouse, who traveled with weapons from neighboring Illinois to, by his own account, offer armed protection to businesses during protests over the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

Rittenhouse became a cause c?l?bre across conservative media throughout late 2020 and was even supported by then-President Donald Trump. He held a fundraiser on GiveSendGo billed as a contribution to his legal defense. He raised $586,940 between Aug. 27 and Jan. 7, according to The Guardian’s article.

Conservative groups and supporters have sought to paint Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time of the Aug. 25 shootings, as a staunch supporter of the Blue Lives Matter movement and a patriot.

. In attempt to justify the actions of Kyle Rittenhouse — the 17-year-old accused of shooting three people, killing two, with a semi-automatic rifle during a protest on Aug. 25, 2020, in Kenosha, Wisconsin — Americans on the political right launched a grassroots effort to uncover any evidence to deny the shooting victims martyrdom among opponents.

The makeshift investigations revealed what hardline conservatives believed to be proof of criminal wrongdoing by the deceased — Anthony Huber, 26, and Joseph Rosenbaum, 36 —as well as by Gaige Grosskreutz, 26, who shot was shot in the arm and survived. One blog post alleged:

Anthony Huber was jailed for domestic violence. Joseph Rosenbaum was a pedophile. Gaige Grosskreutz was arrested and charged with burglary among other crimes […] are you really saying the backgrounds of these ‘peaceful protestors’ aren’t relevant to the discussion?

Ultimately, the focus on the victims’ backgrounds aimed to prove Rittenhouse’s actions defensible, and discredit an underlying belief by the political left: that the victims acted heroically, and were wrongfully targeted by the armed teenager at the protest.

And though the rumors about the shooting victims varied in severity and nature, many alleged this: Huber was a known offender of domestic violence and rapist; Rosenbaum had sexually abused children; Grosskreutz had been arrested on suspicion of multiple crimes, including felony burglary, and all three victims were convicted felons. Based on court records and inmate rosters, aspects of those claims were indeed accurate, while others were outright false.

What follows is an explanation of those findings, as well as everything we know about the incident that made the three men symbols of the country’s political divide, at the request of Snopes readers to investigate the wide-ranging online campaign to celebrate Rittenhouse, and smear the reputations of his alleged victims.

But we should note here: No evidence showed the victims’ histories had anything to do with the protest, which began as a peaceful showing of people against racism by U.S. law enforcement after a white police officer days prior shot and wounded a Black man, Jacob Blake, who is now paralyzed from the waist down.

    — Charlie De Mar (@CharlieDeMar) August 26, 2020

Additionally, no proof existed to confirm or deny whether Rittenhouse knew of Huber, Rosenbaum, or Grosskreutz — or their criminal histories — before he was captured in video footage patrolling the protest with the rifle.

‘I Just Killed Someone’: How the Kenosha Shooting Unfolded
To understand the gravity of the rumors swirling about the shooting victims’ past, let’s unpack what happened that chaotic night in Kenosha.

Giving ideological ammo to Rittenhouse supporters on the frontlines of the country’s culture war online, his legal defense team have framed the teenager from Antioch, Illinois, as a courageous vigilante who was patrolling the streets of Kenosha to prevent property destruction and theft when he needed to use his gun to defend himself. U.S. President Donald Trump, too, has said the teen appeared to be “in very big trouble” and “probably would have been killed” had he not acted the way he did.

That said, according to a statement to reporters by one of Rittenhouse’s attorneys, the teen had heard the owner of a Kenosha car dealership wanted help patrolling his properties during the protest, so Rittenhouse and a friend armed themselves with rifles and headed to one of the auto shops.

After the city’s mandated curfew of 8 p.m. passed, law-enforcement officers tried to clear a crowd of people a couple of blocks away — which, in effect, pushed the group toward the auto shop where Rittenhouse and others were stationed with guns. People in the crowd apparently threatened the teen and others acting as vigilante security guards, per the attorney’s account. Then, after some running around, Rittenhouse attempted to go to a second mechanic shop, which he apparently believed was vulnerable to property damage. That’s when the attorney said people “began chasing him down.”

The back and forth between the teenager and the alleged “mob” was unknown, including if or to what extent they exchanged words. Also unknown were the locations of Huber, Rosenbaum, or Grosskreutz at that point in the night, or whether they had interacted with Rittenhouse before shots were fired.

The complaint outlining Rittenhouse’s criminal charges — which include murder and first-degree reckless homicide — as well as bystanders’ videos, explained what happened next, shortly before midnight: For some reason, Rittenhouse started running in the auto shop parking lot, while his first shooting victim, Rosenbaum, followed him at a close distance, and a journalist trailed Rosenbaum.

At one point, Rosenbaum — who appeared to be unarmed in at least one video — threw what appeared to be a plastic bag in the teen’s direction while running, and it landed short of Rittenhouse. And within seconds, shots rang out, and Rosenbaum fell to the ground, according to the complaint. It was unclear who fired first.

Rittenhouse’s legal team has said the teen didn’t open fire first — but rather he heard a gunshot behind him as he ran, turned around, and saw Rosenbaum lunging toward him and reaching for the rifle.

As the journalist attempted to give Rosenbaum medical aid, Rittenhouse apparently called someone — and then fled. The complaint stated:

As the defendant is running away, he can be heard saying on the phone, ‘i just killed somebody.’ … [The journalist] stated that he then heard other shots really soon after.

. According to cellphone footage, a group of people followed Rittenhouse, yelling “Beat him up!” and “Hey, he shot him!” The teenager continued running, tripped, and then fell to the ground — from where he fired four shots.

Per the complaint, several people rushed toward the teen and hit him or tried to disarm him while he was lying on the ground. Among that group was Rittenhouse’s second victim, Huber, who had apparently hit Rittenhouse with a skateboard during the scuffle. Then, the complaint stated:

The defendant then fires one round … Huber staggers away, taking several steps, then collapses to the ground.

Rittenhouse sat up and pointed his gun at Grosskreutz, who ducked, put his hands in the air, and stepped back. Seconds later, when Grosskreutz moved toward the teen — apparently while holding a handgun — Rittenhouse fired one shot and struck Grosskreutz in the arm, the complaint alleged.

Grosskreutz ran away and medics took him to the hospital, where he was treated for a severe gunshot wound. Weeks later, in an interview with CNN that published Sept. 11, Grosskreutz said he was still recovering and missing most of his bicep where he was shot.

“I never fired my weapon that night,” Grosskreutz said. “Everybody was there exercising their right to protest. And there were some people who were exercising their right to bear arms, including myself.”

What We Know About the Victims — Aside From Their Rap Sheets
All victims apparently were familiar faces at protests against police brutality beginning in May 2020, when George Floyd, a Black man, died after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for about nine minutes, and sparked an international reckoning over race and policing.

Porche Bennett, a Kenosha activist and business owner, told The Kenosha News while all three men were known by protest organizers, Rosenbaum and Huber were regular attendees of gatherings in the Kenosha area.

“They came out here every time with us,” Bennett said of the deceased.

Rosenbaum was originally from Waco, Texas. He lived in Arizona, where he went to high school and a community college, before moving to Wisconsin in 2020, per news reports and his Facebook page. He apparently worked at a Wendy’s restaurant in Kenosha at the time of his death, and he was survived by a fianc?e and young daughter.

Those closest to Huber, a Kenosha resident, remembered him as a friendly, laid-back guy who loved skateboarding. His obituary said he “died a hero fighting for a cause he believed in.”

Grosskreutz, meanwhile, isn’t from Kenosha, a lakeside city between Milwaukee and Chicago with a population of about 100,000 people. Following Blake’s shooting by a police officer there, however, Grosskreutz traveled about 40 miles south to Kenosha from his home in West Allis, a Milwaukee suburb, to show solidarity with those protesting the police officer’s use of potentially lethal force against Blake.

Grosskreutz is reportedly a member of a Milwaukee-based social justice group called the People’s Revolution Movement, and was patrolling Kenosha streets as a volunteer medic when the Aug. 25 demonstration turned deadly. And in addition to social justice work, Grosskreutz has worked as a wilderness medical instructor, among other jobs, and was a senior at a private liberal arts college in Ashland, Wisconsin, when he was shot and wounded, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

“I’m not an Antifa terrorist organizer,” he told CNN. “I go to school. And yeah, I exercise my First Amendment right to peacefully protest.”

What’s True — and False — About the Victims’ Criminal Histories
The viral claims alleging unlawful behavior by Huber, Rosenbaum, and Grosskreutz before the Kenosha shooting were a mixture of truth and falsehoods.

For example, yes, Rosenbaum was found guilty of engaging in “sexual conduct with a minor” in Arizona’s Pima County in March 2002, almost two decades before his death, according to an online database of prison inmates in Arizona, via the state’s department of corrections. Per that online portal, he was sentenced to prison or parole for roughly 15 years. The state’s law defines the felony offense as “intentionally or knowingly engaging in sexual intercourse or oral sexual contact with any person who is under eighteen (18) years of age,” though we could not confirm the details of Rosenbaum’s case. We requested copies of probable-cause statements from the Pima County Superior Court’s Office, and we will update this report when or if we hear back.

Considering that evidence, the claim that Rosenbaum at one point was convicted of sexually abusing at least one child before his death was true.

Next, we analyzed criminal records involving Huber, and determined it also accurate to state he was charged with domestic abuse. We uncovered a Kenosha County criminal complaint that outlined his first serious run-in with law enforcement, in December 2012. And per that complaint, Huber, who was 18 years old at the time, threatened his brother and grandmother at their home with a knife, choked the brother, and demanded that they follow his orders. The complaint said the brother wanted to take Huber to a hospital, apparently for emergency mental health help, but Huber resisted. In the end, he was charged with strangulation and suffocation and false imprisonment, both of which are felony crimes.

On another occasion, about three years later, Huber paid a roughly $150 citation or possessing drug paraphernalia, court records showed. Then, in 2018, Huber was charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor offense, after a fight with his sister at their house, per a criminal complaint by Kenosha prosecutors.

But unlike what many Rittenhouse supporters claimed, we could find no court evidence that Huber had sexually assaulted anyone.

Also false was the assertion that all three of the teenager’s victims were felons. Grosskreutz had not committed a felony crime, our analysis of court records showed.

He was, however, found guilty in 2016 of breaking Wisconsin’s law governing the use of dangerous weapons — a misdemeanor offense — per Milwaukee County court records. He had apparently gone somewhere “armed while intoxicated,” though the court records did not elaborate on what exactly had happened. Snopes requested a copy of the probable cause statement from county records administrators, but we have not yet obtained it.

Additionally, Grosskreutz at various points received tickets for minor offenses including disobeying police officers and making loud noises, the court records showed. However, no evidence showed he had indeed committed burglary, like supporters of the alleged killer claimed, though he had been arrested on suspicion of the crime in 2012. The felony charge was later dismissed, per Wisconsin Department of Justice’s criminal data.

In the interview with CNN, Grosskreutz said he has paid his debt for his past crimes and that he had every right to carry a gun at the Aug. 25 protest. “I’m not a felon,” he said. “I had a legal right to possess [a firearm] and to possess it concealed.”

The Victims’ Criminal Past ‘Have No Bearing on Them Being Shot’
As of this writing, Rittenhouse was set to make his next court appearance on Sept. 25, and no court proceedings have called attention to the criminal histories of his alleged victims.

Threads on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and other social media sites for Americans on the far political right, as well as white supremacists and armed militias, were a different story, however. Those type of discussions were not unusual; onlookers of high-profile, controversial killings often focus on the criminal records of the victims, no matter the relevance of that history.

Kyle Rittenhouse shot a sex offender , a domestic abuser and an armed communist.

The phenomenon is particularly prevalent when authorities kill non-white people; for example, conservative corners of the internet focused on Floyd’s alleged criminal background after his death, which sparked a civil rights movement, and the rapsheet of another Black man, Rayshard Brooks, after a white Atlanta police officer fatally shot him in a Wendy’s parking lot in June 2020.

Psychologists have said the strategy — whether intentional or not — of shifting focus away from questionable violence and onto the past unlawful behavior of victims makes it easy for people to subscribe to the “they had it coming” trope and justify deaths or injuries.

In response to that campaign, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel released a statement on Sept. 1 in which it explained why the newspaper had not reported on the victims’ past legal records. The statement read:

There is no evidence so far that the backgrounds of the three victims — Anthony Huber, Joseph Rosenbaum and Gaige Grosskreutz — had anything to do with the clashes that led to the deaths of Huber and Rosenbaum and the wounding of Grosskreutz.

They are the victims of a shooting, and as far as we can tell their past legal records have no bearing on them being shot during a protest.

If more facts emerge that show their backgrounds are relevant to what happened that night in Kenosha, we would revisit our decision. For instance, if there is evidence that any of the victims’ backgrounds could have affected their interactions with Rittenhouse, or if he knew anything about them before the shooting.

. According to cellphone footage, a group of people followed Rittenhouse, yelling ?Beat him up!? and ?Hey, he shot him!? The teenager continued running, tripped, and then fell to the ground ? from where he fired four shots.

Per the complaint, several people rushed toward the teen and hit him or tried to disarm him while he was lying on the ground. Among that group was Rittenhouse?s second victim, Huber, who had apparently hit Rittenhouse with a skateboard during the scuffle. Then, the complaint stated:

The defendant then fires one round ? Huber staggers away, taking several steps, then collapses to the ground.

Rittenhouse sat up and pointed his gun at Grosskreutz, who ducked, put his hands in the air, and stepped back. Seconds later, when Grosskreutz moved toward the teen ? apparently while holding a handgun ? Rittenhouse fired one shot and struck Grosskreutz in the arm, the complaint alleged.

Grosskreutz ran away and medics took him to the hospital, where he was treated for a severe gunshot wound. Weeks later, in an interview with CNN that published Sept. 11, Grosskreutz said he was still recovering and missing most of his bicep where he was shot.

?I never fired my weapon that night,? Grosskreutz said. ?Everybody was there exercising their right to protest. And there were some people who were exercising their right to bear arms, including myself.?

What We Know About the Victims ? Aside From Their Rap Sheets

?They came out here every time with us,? Bennett said of the deceased.

Rosenbaum was originally from Waco, Texas. He lived in Arizona, where he went to high school and a community college, before moving to Wisconsin in 2020, per news reports and his Facebook page. He apparently worked at a Wendy?s restaurant in Kenosha at the time of his death, and he was survived by a fianc?e and young daughter.

Those closest to Huber, a Kenosha resident, remembered him as a friendly, laid-back guy who loved skateboarding. His obituary said he ?died a hero fighting for a cause he believed in.?

Grosskreutz, meanwhile, isn?t from Kenosha, a lakeside city between Milwaukee and Chicago with a population of about 100,000 people. Following Blake?s shooting by a police officer there, however, Grosskreutz traveled about 40 miles south to Kenosha from his home in West Allis, a Milwaukee suburb, to show solidarity with those protesting the police officer?s use of potentially lethal force against Blake.

Grosskreutz is reportedly a member of a Milwaukee-based social justice group called the People?s Revolution Movement, and was patrolling Kenosha streets as a volunteer medic when the Aug.

?I?m not an Antifa terrorist organizer,? he told CNN. ?I go to school. And yeah, I exercise my First Amendment right to peacefully protest.?

What?s True ? and False ? About the Victims? Criminal Histories
The viral claims alleging unlawful behavior by Huber, Rosenbaum, and Grosskreutz before the Kenosha shooting were a mixture of truth and falsehoods.

For example, yes, Rosenbaum was found guilty of engaging in ?sexual conduct with a minor? in Arizona?s Pima County in March 2002, almost two decades before his death, according to an online database of prison inmates in Arizona, via the state?s department of corrections. Per that online portal, he was sentenced to prison or parole for roughly 15 years. The state?s law defines the felony offense as ?intentionally or knowingly engaging in sexual intercourse or oral sexual contact with any person who is under eighteen (18) years of age,? though we could not confirm the details of Rosenbaum?s case. We requested copies of probable-cause statements from the Pima County Superior Court?s Office, and we will update this report when or if we hear back.

Also false was the assertion that all three of the teenager?s victims were felons. Grosskreutz had not committed a felony crime, our analysis of court records showed.

He was, however, found guilty in 2016 of breaking Wisconsin?s law governing the use of dangerous weapons ? a misdemeanor offense ? per Milwaukee County court records. He had apparently gone somewhere ?armed while intoxicated,? though the court records did not elaborate on what exactly had happened.

The felony charge was later dismissed, per Wisconsin Department of Justice?s criminal data.

In the interview with CNN, Grosskreutz said he has paid his debt for his past crimes and that he had every right to carry a gun at the Aug. 25 protest. ?I?m not a felon,? he said. ?I had a legal right to possess [a firearm] and to possess it concealed.?

. KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) - The white police officer who shot Jacob Blake in Wisconsin last summer was suspended for three days this year because his service weapon was stolen just weeks after the shooting that left the Black man partially paralyzed.

WISN-TV reports that officials waited seven months to investigate and the weapon is still missing. Kenosha police told the TV station that Officer Rusten Sheskey reported on Sept. 15 that his Glock 17 service weapon had been stolen that day, apparently from inside his girlfriend?s car.

It was a loaner weapon Sheskey was given after the Wisconsin Department of Justice investigators seized the one used to shoot Blake.

While #RustenSheskey was on leave during the #JacobBlake investigation, he received a loaner gun from @KenoshaPolice. Someone stole it from his GF unlocked car 3 weeks later. He was only recently suspended for 3 days for the stolen gun, which is still missing today. @WISN12News pic.twitter.com/030taEm5ux

Drama gets crazier from here now that the focus is back on the officer that sparked the Jacob Blake backlash to begin with.

So glad I don't live in Kenosha, riot time. It was pretty funny when he fell.

Honestly. Neither I nor my husband wants to see this sicko smiling right now.

Mark my words. He'll be back in the headlines within two years killing someone else because he feels like he's above the law now. George Zimmerman 2.0.

Also, we'll get to enjoy hunting season on protestors by rapid Trumpers.

It's not as if protest is an AMERICAN RIGHT or anything. I guess only certain rights apply when the right people are exercising them.

I fucking hate what this country has become and I've given up on it.

Remind me to say over and over again the next time I want to kill someone that "my life was in danger". We should all get a "get out of jail free" card.
