An intoxicated motorist struck and killed a woman working Thursday to remove trash and debris from the median of an Arlington highway, police said.
Paula Penigar, 53, of Fort Worth, died about 1:30 p.m. at the scene on Interstate Highway 20 near Collins Street, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office said.
The driver of the SUV was westbound on I-20 when he switched lanes and rear-ended a Jeep Comanche whose driver was also headed west, Arlington police said. The impact caused the airbags in the the Honda CRV to deploy and its driver to lose control, leave the highway and strike Penigar.
Penigar was a subcontractor for the Texas Department of Transportation, police said. She was wearing a reflective vest.
James Miller, 34, was driving the Honda and was arrested on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter, according to a police report.
