Marilane Carter (36) found dead in her vehicle inside a shipping container two weeks after voluntarily going missing

    https://www.al.com/news/birmingham/2...-saturday.html

A Kansas City mother of three with strong ties to Alabama has been missing since Aug. 1 and family members are praying she will be found safe.

Marilane Carter, a 36-year-old graduate of Samford University?s Beeson Divinity School and the wife of an Overland Park pastor, was last seen about 8:15 p.m. Saturday when she left home headed toward Birmingham, according to the Overland Park Police Department.

Her brother-in-law, Brady McLaughlin, said Carter was coming to Birmingham to seek mental health help and that they believe she had reached out to Grandview Medical Center and/or UAB to set that up. The last known telephone contact with family put her in Memphis near Interstate 55 about 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Since then, McLaughlin said, there has been no contact and no vehicle sighting. Her phone is dead and there have been no credit card charges or bank activity.

Carter is married to the Rev. Adam Carter who is the lead pastor of Leawood Baptist Church in Kansas. The couple has two young sons and a daughter. The children are being cared for by family members while Carter?s husband is helping in the search for her. She also has family members in Fairhope.

Carter was driving her gray 2011 GMC Acadia with Kansas license plate 194LFY. She is 5-feet, 8-inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds. She has long brown hair and green eyes. She was last known to be wearing a green t-shirt and black yoga pants.

Police said she had made concerning statements to her family. A Facebook page called Find Marilane has been set up to share information, tips, and leads.

?Marilane?s husband and three children, as well as our entire family, just want to know that Marilane is safe. We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of prayers and support,?' McLaughlin said. ?The biggest way to help now is to share this story, share any leads or information with law enforcement and pray that God orchestrates a path for her to be found safely.?

Anyone with information on Carter?s whereabouts is asked to call 911.

The husband of missing Overland Park woman Marilane Carter said he's encouraged by recent tips received in connection with her disappearance.

Adam Carter told 41 Action News on Friday that after news of Carter’s disappearance spread in several states on Thursday, authorities received one tip that Carter had gotten gas on Monday morning in northern Mississippi, about 25 miles from where her cellphone last pinged near Memphis, Tennessee. A woman said she had helped Carter get gas, and Carter was seen going into the bathroom, wearing a white shirt, black yoga pants and a backpack.

The sighting on Monday is the last time anyone has seen Carter, her husband said.

The search for Carter has focused on the Memphis area after her family reported her missing to Overland Park police. Her last credit card purchase came from a gas station in West Memphis, Arkansas. A clerk at that store also confirmed that Carter had been seen there.

Adam Carter said his wife planned to seek mental health treatment at a hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, where she had previously worked.

“I had offered to take her to a hospital there in the Kansas City area, but she wanted to go somewhere to just get some help at a place that she felt that she could trust and was familiar with,” Adam Carter said.

UPDATE: Late Friday afternoon, police released surveillance video showing Marilane Carter checking into a Missouri hotel early Sunday morning. She checked out about three hours later alone. A family member says investigators are looking into gaps in the timeline in Carter's travel path. Brother in law Brady Mclaughlin says the next focus may be a search of the river in Memphis.

He says tips and potential sightings are coming in from places like Mississippi, Huntsville, Mobile, and Homewood.
A mother of three from Kansas was on her way to Birmingham to help with her sister's new baby and seek therapy for a sleeping problem before she disappeared, according to her family.

The search for Marilane Carter is now focused on the mid-south.
I wonder why the change in story now. We haven't heard about the new baby until now.

The search for a missing Overland Park mother has moved to the water.

Marilane Carter disappeared more than a week ago. Since then, her husband, Adam Carter, has made good use of social media as a platform to recruit help in finding his wife.

“The biggest need that we need help with right now is we need volunteers to help us search the river right around the I-55 bridge there in Memphis,” he said in a public address.

Marilane Carter, an Overland Park mother of three, left on Aug. 1 for Birmingham, Alabama, where her family lives. She was headed there to get help with mental health concerns.
A West Plains, Missouri, hotel provided police with surveillance video showing her checking in at about 3 a.m. the following morning. Family said she stayed there about three hours, then hit the road again until she drove near Memphis.

That’s the last time Marilane spoke with her husband and mother on the phone, and the last time investigators pinged her cell. She was near the Arkansas-Tennessee border, a couple miles from the Mississippi River.

Police have searched the land, but her family is now asking for help as the search moves into the water.

“We need people who have a boat and very good sonars and experience navigating the Mississippi River,” Adam Carter said. “That would be a help to us as we’re attempting to rule out the worst possible case scenario of the river and that area.”

A Kansas wife and mother who vanished nearly two weeks ago while en route to Alabama had planned to fly to Birmingham but made a last-minute decision to drive instead, authorities said Friday.

Marilane Carter, a 36-year-old graduate of Samford University’s Beeson Divinity School and the wife of an Overland Park pastor, was last seen about 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, when she left home headed toward Birmingham, according to the Overland Park Police Department.

Det. Blake Larsen on Friday held a news briefing in Overland Park, the first since Carter’s disappearance. He said Carter that Saturday bought a Southwest Airlines ticket to fly to Birmingham to visit her sister, who is due to soon have a baby, and also to seek treatment for undisclosed mental health issues.

Carter took a nap Saturday and when she awoke, Larsen said, she decided to drive to Birmingham instead. “That helps give a view into her mindset,’' Larsen said.

Carter told her husband, the Rev. Adam Carter who is the lead pastor Leawood Baptist Church in Kansas, and then left home about 8:15 p.m. “Her husband was concerned she was going to go,’' Larsen said.

Authorities have been able to determine through credit card charges and cell phone data that Carter traveled through Missouri where she stopped at a McDonalds. Then, on Sunday, Aug. 3, she checked in alone to the Quality Inn in West Plains, Missouri at 3:37 a.m. She checked out of the hotel at 6:08 a.m., driving off alone in her 2011 dark gray GMC Acadia with Kansas license plate 194 LFY.

Also Sunday, Carter made a stop at a Shell Station in West Memphis, Arkansas, where she fueled up and went inside with her cup to get some ice water. The last pinged GPS location of her cell phone was at 8:02 p.m. later that day near the Arkansas weigh station on Interstate 55 entering Memphis.

A law enforcement air unit in Memphis flew for 1 ? hours on a grid pattern covering a four-mile radius where her cell phone last pinged. Forensic cellular experts are working with the Overland Park Police Department to determine more about her last calls to family and her last location.

The detective said Carter’s husband became worried when she did not arrive in Birmingham and filed a missing person’s report with Overland Park police at 3 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3. “She left Overland Park of her own free will with nothing suspicious afoot,’' Larsen said.

More than a half-dozen law enforcement agencies in at least four state have aided in the search for Carter. “This is not an active criminal investigation,’' Larsen emphasized. “We’re simply trying to locate Marilane Carter to help bring her back to her (family). They’re worried sick about her.”

Though multiple law enforcement agencies – including the FBI and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation – are working on the case, searchers are relying on volunteers to check the waterways “to hopefully rule out any possibility that Marilane and/or her vehicle are there,” according to the Facebook page dedicated to the search - Find Marilane.

On Thursday, volunteers began a sonar search of the Mississippi River, which continued on Friday. Family also has sent flyers to more than 100 hospitals accompanied with power of attorney documents to try to find out if Carter is, or had been, hospitalized any time since her disappearance. Additionally, volunteers are posting flyers throughout the region, including truckers who are distributing them nationwide.

Larsen said investigators are not able to obtain a search warrant for Carter’s cell phone records in Kansas City because her disappearance is not considered criminal. People often disappear voluntarily to “live off the grid” and Larsen explained that is perfectly OK. However, there is no indication that is the case with Carter, and authorities have listed her as “missing and endangered” because of the possible mental health issues. “We want to find someone who may be in a crisis,’' he said.

Arkansas State Police, however, believe they may be able to obtain that search warrant and that effort is ongoing. “Law enforcement is using all logical and reasonable investigative techniques,’' he said.

The thing that separates Carter’s disappearance from others, the detective said, is that all of her activity seemed to stop at once – on Aug. 2. “This is a unique and strange case,’' he said. “Everything just stopped at a certain time.”

Law enforcement in Arkansas believe they have found the body of a missing Overland Park woman.

In a tragic end to this multi-state search, Marilane Carter was likely found dead Tuesday in her vehicle in West Memphis. Positive identification of the body is still pending.

Officials do not suspect foul play.
    https://wreg.com/news/crittenden-cou...-kansas-woman/

The Crittenden County Sheriff Department says it has located a body they believe may be a missing Kansas woman inside a vehicle authorities say belonged to her.

The vehicle, with the remains inside, were found inside a shipping container in a rural area in eastern Arkansas.

A credit card with Marilane Carter’s name was found in the car, they said.

WTF? They don't suspect foul play, but her car was inside a shipping container? Was it open or locked? What, did she just find an empty shipping container hanging around and drove her car into it and died? Was it a suicide? I need more information.

ETA: Her uncle found the conex and the car in West Memphis, Arkansas.

Crittenden County Sheriff's Office Chief Todd Grooms said during a press conference that Carter's uncle discovered the vehicle in a Conex trailer that was hidden by tall grass in an area that had previously been searched.

If she ended her life using the exhaust from her car, she may have used the shipping container as a fail safe of the gas escaping.

How would she know a shipping container was there? They claimed it was hidden from view. Really out of all the possible rescuer's the Uncle? Not me claiming he had something to do with it. This story is odd in a lot of ways. It seems she never got to see her sisters baby. Unless I missed that. I would throw that on my bucket list for sure before leaving. It all seems strange.

A woman found dead in an SUV inside a storage container in a remote field in Arkansas likely died of asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning, the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.

Chief Todd Grooms said the remains are believed to belong to Marilane Carter of Kansas, who disappeared in the Mid-South more than two weeks ago as she drove to Alabama for mental health treatment, according to her family. Family and law enforcement had been searching the area for weeks.

Body, vehicle matching missing Kansas woman found in shipping container in Arkansas

Carter’s uncle found her SUV backed into a shipping container down a gravel road off Interstate 55 on Tuesday morning. He alerted county authorities, who had seen the container but hadn’t looked inside.

The remains, discovered Tuesday, have not been positively identified by the Arkansas State Crime Lab, and the cause of death has not been determined by a medical examiner. The coroner’s office confirmed the State Crime Lab picked up the body Wednesday morning.

But Grooms said the vehicle’s ignition was in the run position and evidence showed it had been running inside the closed container. The vehicle was confirmed as Carter’s and one of her credit cards was found inside, authorities said.

“No foul play is suspected at this time,” Grooms said in a statement. “Information gathered from family members concerning her mental and emotional state during her final communications along with facts gathered from the scene have led investigators to believe that Marilane Carter drove the vehicle into the container and in doing so caused her demise.”

Well, who knows. She might have just been "lucky", been planning to take her own life in a rural area and happened on the shipping container. Also possible that she researched ending her life using carbon monoxide, read that a shipping container was extra surety, and searched for areas where she'd find one.

A woman found dead in an SUV inside a storage container in a remote field in Arkansas has positively been identified as missing Kansas mother Marilane Carter.

The Arkansas State Medical Examiners Office in Little Rock ruled her death as a suicide and the cause of death as asphyxiation from carbon monoxide, according to the Crittenden County Sheriff’s office on Friday.

This is really sad. I can't imagine how her family feels. How did the Uncle know where to look? I have to think there must have been indications (cell phone pings?) she was in the area.

Liv's TCS FB page has all kind of gossip going on concerning this page. Apparently the rumour is that a search warrant was being service on the Uncle that found her, and he committed suicide. I can't find any news stories yet.

Breaking: Uncle who found body and car of Marilane Carter dead of apparent suicide in Kansas after search warrant served at his house

    https://watchkeep.blogspot.com/2020/...JfJLuKofC9LFjA

I was contacted Saturday night by someone asking if I had heard that Adam Carter's uncle Larry Bradley had killed himself. That was the first I had heard about it. I was also told that police had shown up at Larry Bradley's house last week in Overland Park, Kansas with a search warrant. Sometime after that, Larry allegedly left and went somewhere and killed himself, possibly at a nearby park.

Larry Bradley is Kansas Baptist pastor Adam Carter's uncle who found Marilane Carter's body and car on August 18, 2020 in a remote field in a shipping container in West Memphis, Arkansas. Larry is married to Ellen, Adam's dad Craig's sister.

I posted to Facebook and Twitter looking to confirm news of Larry's death.

First, I received a reply from Jason Wilson on Facebook who reportedly is Larry Bradley's co-worker at BNSF Railway.

Then, a close friend of Adam confirmed Larry's death and the search warrant.

I received private information in the Marilane Carter case while she was still missing that led to the belief that she was already dead & family knew. A few days after she was found, someone who cares about her & the truth reached out to me for help. I reported to several law enforcement agencies. The information I received suggests foul play and needs an investigation. A few weeks ago I heard that an investigation has been opened.

If anyone has something to share, email me or message me. Thank you.

I don't know what to think. Innocent people usually don't kill themselves when they are served with a search warrant.
