A woman was killed Friday in an apparent murder-suicide in San Dimas in which her estranged husband shot her while she was inside a parked car, then walked a few miles away and took his own life on a hiking trail, authorities said.

A hiker came across the body of a man with a gunshot wound Friday morning on a trail near the Hiking Valley Center Staging Area at 15 South Valley Center Avenue, the Los Angeles County Sheriff?s Department said.

Authorities identified the man as Randolph Echeverria, 33, of San Dimas. After finding his body, sheriff?s investigators found out the man had been reported missing one day earlier, said Lt. Barry Hall, with the Sheriff?s Homicide Bureau.

Also reported missing around the same time was Randolph Echeverria?s estranged wife, 36-year-old Karla Echeverria.

Within hours of finding Randolph Echeverria?s body, Hall said investigators found the body of Karla Echeverria sitting in the driver?s seat of a car parked on Calle Primavera, south of the hiking trail.

Investigators suspect Randolph shot and killed Karla inside her car, then walked over to the trail where he then fatally shot himself, Hall said.

Though the exact motive was not known, Hall confirmed with relatives that the pair were estranged and had been living separately.

After both Randloph and Karla Echeverria did not return home on Thursday evening, family members phoned authorities to report them missing.

?It was out of character for both of them to be missing overnight,? Hall said.

The car in which Karla Echeverria was found was parked several blocks away from the home of Randolph Echeverria?s parents, where he had been staying.
