SAN DIEGO (CNS) ? Police detained and questioned a man after a deadly stabbing in the University Heights area early Thursday morning, police said.

Dispatchers received a call shortly after 3:45 a.m. from a man who reported seeing two men arguing in an apartment on Howard Avenue between Alabama and Mississippi streets, San Diego police Officer Matt Dobbs said.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene and found the body of a 56-year-old man on the ground, Dobbs said. The victim had obvious trauma to the chest, he added.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene, the officer said.

Officers searched the area and a man came out of the apartment and asked paramedics to help him. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police have not said if the injured man is a suspect in the stabbing.

The circumstances leading up to the fatal stabbing were under investigation.
