Hakim Littleton (19) Killed by Detroit Polce and a Protest is underway

DETROIT ? A protest prompted by an officer involved shooting is growing in Detroit with larger crowds.

Police officers were involved in the deadly shooting. It happened this afternoon at McNichols and San Juan just west of Livernois. Neighbors and police seem to have very different stories.

Protesters chanted about defunding the police and called officers racist.

According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, officers were looking for a person involved in a Fouth of July shooting that left five people hurt and three others dead.

Officers say when they found their suspect they were approached by another man. Somehow a fight happened and an officer put that man in some kind of hold. That?s when officers say the man they restrained opened fire.

He began to fire a number of rounds at the officer over his shoulder. As that was happening the officer pushed him away and that is when the additional officers fearing for their lives fired off several rounds striking that suspect.

The man identified as 19-year-old Hakim Littleton by family was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

But family members who saw the interaction said that?s not how it happened.

They say Littleton did approach the officer but was unarmed and had dropped to his knees when officers pulled the trigger. His cousin says she saw it happen.

?They murdered him. Shot him in his back walking down the street. Oh they told them to freeze, ok put your hands up. And they did, and they shot him trying to put his phone in his pocket,? said Deseanae Wells, the victim?s cousin.

A press conference is scheduled to take place tonight beginning 7:30 p.m. at Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.

Craig will provide additional information regarding the shooting at the press conference.

DETROIT (FOX 2) - A crowd is gathering Friday evening at the scene where a young man was shot and killed earlier Friday afternoon by Detroit police.

This is happening at West McNichols Road and San Juan Drive on the city's west side, just hours after a man who's been identified by witnesses as Hakeem Littleton was shot and killed by Detroit officers.

The police account of what happened is that Littleton got into a struggle with officers and, while being held down, grabbed a gun and shot at an officer over his shoulder. Chief Craig said multiple officers then returned fire. But witnesses say Littleton didn't have a gun and that video shows a different account of what happened.

FOX 2 is asking anyone who has that video of what happened to call us at 248-552-5103. Chief Craig has also called a press conference for 7:30 p.m. in which he plans to release a video that he says shows the shooting death.

Meanwhile, the activist group Detroit Will Breathe, which has been taking the lead in many protests in the city since they broke out nationwide after the death of George Floyd, called for followers to head to the area as soon as possible tonight in response to the shooting.

FOX 2 has a crew at the scene, where police appeared to have deployed tear gas on the crowd around 5:30 p.m.

Protesters then began marching just before 6 p.m. and headed towards Detroit's 12th precinct at 7 Mile and Woodward, where they were eventually met by a line of police officers blocking their path on Seven Mile.

Just after 7 p.m. the police unblocked the path and allowed the march to move forward. Officers instead went and formed a line in front of the 12th precinct.

Detroit police then got on megaphones saying "This is the Detroit Police Department. We support your peaceful protest but do not engage our officers."

Sam Riddle from the National Action Network was seen in the protest crowd.

"This is not something that Hollywood Craig or Mayor Duggan can control right now and they're going to have to take into consideration how we handle public safety in Detroit, not policing," he told FOX 2.

You can watch a livestream from the scene here if you cannot see the video player above.

Detroit Police has released the video of the officer involved shooting

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit Police James Craig provided an update and released body-cam footage of an officer-involved shooting which left a man dead on Friday afternoon.
Craig released the following details about the shooting:

Police arrived at 12:35 p.m. to make an arrest on a man named Mr. Sylvester on an active federal DEA warrant for the shooting earlier this month. Mr. Sylvester was being arrested without incident.

During the arrest, Hakim Littleton, who was the man who was shot and killed, was present during the arrest.

While officers were arresting Sylvester, Hakim said, something to the effect of you're not going to take my man, in other words, the interpretation is, you're not going to arrest him.

Littleton then drew a handgun from his left pocket, pointed it at officers, and fired a shot at one of the police officers at close range, narrowly missing him. Chief Craig said it was between 2-3 feet from the officer.

Three officers returned fire, and Littleton continued firing his weapon even as he was on the ground.

Officers fired 4 shots in total, 2 from one officer, one each from the other two officers.

Littleton also fired four shots from his .25 caliber blue steel semi-automatic Beretta.

The news conference was called after protests broke out at the scene of the officer-involved shooting.

While the protest began peacefully, some agitators then threw bottles at bricks at the officers.

Chief Craig told 7 Action News that the protesters were responding to internet rumors about the shooting that indicated it was an ambush.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan released the following statement:

The City of Detroit was one of the first in America to outfit its police cars and officers with cameras for this type of incident. Public confidence requires citizens to be able to judge for themselves the actions of our officers. The video is clear that the officer was suddenly and unexpectedly fired upon. I commend Chief Craig for moving so quickly to release the video publicly.
