Actress Naya Rivera drowned after jumping off a boat into a lake

Actress Naya Rivera missing after disappearing from boat

    LOS ANGELES ?
Authorities say former ?Glee? star Naya Rivera is missing and being searched for at a Southern California lake.

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department late Wednesday confirmed that Rivera, 33, is the person being searched for in the waters of Lake Piru, which is approximately 56 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

KNBC reported late Wednesday that Rivera rented a pontoon boat at the Lake Piru reservoir Wednesday and that her young son was found on the boat wearing a life vest. Rivera?s identification was found on the boat. Sheriff?s officials launched a boat and helicopter search Wednesday afternoon, but that had been suspended by nighttime. The search will continue early Thursday.

?We?re going on the belief that she did go in the water and we have not been able to locate her. So this may well be a case of drowning,? Captain Eric Buschow said during a news conference.

Rivera?s 4-year-old son is from a marriage with actor Ryan Dorsey. The couple finalized their divorce in June 2018 after nearly four years of marriage.

She called her young son ?my greatest success, and I will never do any better than him? in her 2016 memoir ?Sorry Not Sorry.?

The actress was engaged to rapper Big Sean in 2013, but their relationship ended a year later. The pair met on Twitter and collaborated musically, with the rapper appearing on Rivera?s debut single ?Sorry.?

Rivera played Santana, a cheerleader in the musical-comedy ?Glee? that aired on Fox from 2009 until 2015. She appeared in 113 episodes of the series and dated co-star Mark Salling, who killed himself in 2018 after pleading guilty to child pornography charges.

Never saw Glee but I remember her from Devious Maids (loved that show).

I don't know her or the shows you mentioned, but I'm haunted by this. I'm insanely safety conscious around open water, I'd be afraid to take a child out alone for exactly this reason - something could happen to me and my baby would be floating around by himself in the lake. It made me shudder just to type that.

And of course we all know I wouldn't go out on a lake rental boat under any circumstances anyway, so....

According to her son, she jumped in the lake and never resurfaced. Someone found him asleep in the boat. I just don't get what she was thinking.

The search for Naya Rivera has shifted from a rescue mission to a recovery one, with the Glee actress presumed dead, authorities announced Thursday.

USA Today and Fox LA confirmed the news after Rivera, 33, disappeared from a rented boat on a Southern California lake on Wednesday. PEOPLE has reached out to the sheriff's office for comment.

The actress, who portrayed Santana Lopez on the hit FOX series for six seasons, was reported missing after a trip to Lake Piru in Ventura County, California. Rivera and her 4-year-old son, Josey Dorsey, rented a pontoon boat and were swimming in the water. After the boat was overdue for return after the three-hour rental, staff at the lake found it at the north side of the body of water with her sleeping son aboard, but not Rivera.

A search-and-rescue operation was undertaken at the lake, but when Rivera was not found, authorities suspended the search for the night, resuming again on Thursday.

Per USA Today, volunteers in red rescue shirts and deputies in uniform both gathered together at a dock. Sheriff's officials also noted that they were awaiting the arrival of additional dive teams and sonar equipment to aid in their operations.

According to NBC Los Angeles, Josey was wearing his lifejacket when he was found asleep on the boat. An adult lifejacket, believed to be the one provided to Rivera, was still on the boat.

Rivera's friends and costars have called for prayers after the star disappeared during her trip, with several of Rivera's Glee costars asking fans for prayers that she's found soon.

Heather Morris, who worked closely with Rivera on the musical comedy series, wrote on her Instagram Story: "We need all the prayers we can get to bring our Naya back home to us. We need your love and light 🙏🙏"

Harry Shum Jr., who played Mike Chang on the show, tweeted simply "Praying," as Iqbal Theba, aka Principal Figgins, wrote on Twitter, "Oh God... mercy... please..." while sharing a report of Rivera's disappearance.

Demi Lovato ? who guest-starred as a love interest for Rivera's Santana Lopez on Glee ? wrote on her Instagram Story, "Please pray for @nayarivera to be found safe and sound," alongside a photo of a lit candle. https://people.com/tv/glees-naya-rivera-presumed-dead-after-boating-incident-according-to-authorities/

I dunno.... lake monsters? And thank you, so I'm not the only one who wouldn't dream of going out on a lake alone with a 4yo. The article said the boat was overdue so they went out looking for it and found the child in the boat. Why?!?!? If she is found drowned, this was totally preventable.

As we reported ... when Naya jumped in the water, the visibility was 5 to 9 inches. Piru is not a natural lake, and its bottom is covered by trees and other debris, in which a swimmer can easily get entangled. The lake also has strong currents, making swimming difficult.
Law enforcement sources tell us ... they don't know where Naya and her 4-year-old son, Josey Hollis Dorsey, were when they both jumped in the water. Josey got back in the boat and fell asleep. When authorities arrived, he told them Naya never returned.

Agreed. But it's easy, especially as adults, to think swimming in a lake with no lifejacket is safe....I always have (though I wouldn't now. Swim in a lake, I mean...yuck).

Wait. He's four years old and he was swimming in the lake with his mother and when he didn't see her anymore he just climbed back in the boat and fell asleep???

He's 4 and had no reason to worry. I think that when he got tired he went back to the boat and took a nap.

It looks to me strange. I think for kids 4ys old it?s hard even to climb back in the boat.

Sorry, I didn't mean the not worrying part. I'm talking about him having the presence of mind and physical ability to get himself safely back into the boat without assistance. I find that pretty impressive because that's such an unpredictable age - Big Boy one minute, helpless crybaby the next. At least that's how mine were at four, although I did have a natural climber who had no fear. I could see him doing it. Bless this little guy, I'm so glad he's safe.

Exactly. Of course, I don't know what kind of boat it was, and how high or low it sits in the water. I just know I wouldn't have confidence that the average 4yo could climb into a boat in the middle of a lake by himself.

Yeah, here is the "crime scene." How did that little guy get back into that boat by himself? Maybe he never actually went in. Maybe she went in first and never came back. I don't know what level language skills Josey has, but maybe the investigators are making assumptions based on child-speak.

But, if the worst fears presented by authorities are true, the "Glee" star would not be the first life claimed by California's beautiful Lake Piru; in 2010 a man drowned right in front of eight of his friends, having also jumped off a pontoon boat for a swim.

On May 22 of that year, a party of nine friends, celebrating their graduation from nursing school, rented out a pontoon boat, similar to the one Naya and her son did on Wednesday before she went missing.

After motoring to Pump House Point, three of the friends decided to go for a swim. Two of them put on life vests; one of them — Roberto Barrios — did not.

After the trio jumped into the water, the wind picked up and the boat drifted away from the swimmers; Barrios was seen struggling in the now choppy waters before disappearing below the surface.

A passing boat managed to pick up his two friends, but Barrios never resurfaced.

Search and rescue teams were called in as Scuba divers scoured the bottom of the lake, but to no avail. Side-scan sonar was deployed to search the deeper sections of the lake, but for two days they found nothing.

It wasn't until the third day, after studying photos the tragic party had taken just before Barrios disappeared, that they found his body on the bottom of the lake, 50 feet below the surface, ABC7 reported at the time.

I'm sure the reason most people don't wear a life vest is because they feel they're good swimmers and don't need one. I'm a great driver, but I still wear a seat belt.

Naya Rivera got son safely on boat, couldn’t save self, officials say

    https://pagesix.com/2020/07/13/naya-...619.1593453163

Officials believe that former “Glee” actress Naya Rivera, whose body was found in a California lake Monday, managed to save her son by getting him on their drifting boat.

“We believe it was mid-afternoon when she went swimming, the idea being, perhaps, that the boat began drifting… and that she mustered enough energy to get her son back on the boat but not enough to save herself,” Ventura County Sheriff William Ayub told reporters at a press conference held after the discovery of her body Monday.

He added that “[Her son Josey] described being helped into the boat by Naya, who boosted him onto the deck from behind. He looked back and saw her disappear under the surface of the water,”

Naya Rivera’s text to relative may provide crucial clue about final moments

    https://pagesix.com/2020/07/13/naya-...619.1593453163

Missing “Glee” actress Naya Rivera sent a photo to a relative shortly before vanishing on a Southern California lake that may provide an important clue about her final moments, according to a report.

Rivera, 33, took a photo of her 4-year-old son, Josey, near a cove on Lake Piru about 90 minutes to two hours before he was found alone on a rented boat, US Weekly reported.

“We found where that cove was,” Robert Inglis of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team told the outlet.

The leading theory is that they went in to swim and the tides started carrying the boat away from them because it wasn't anchored. She had her son and was trying to swim them both back to the boat as it was floating away which tired her out. She reached the boat with enough strength to get him on board and then went under. I guess the authorities are saying that he told them that he got on to the boat and when he turned around she went under the water. This makes sense to me, so I'm drawn to believe it.

The fact she was able to get her son on the boat makes me think she was SO CLOSE. Makes it even more awful.

Yeah, the thought of it is horrible. They're basing that off of what her son told them and the fact that the boat wasn't anchored. I could see it happening though. A Mama Bear's will to save her child will give them crazy strength, but once they know they're safe, just done. Tons of people are coming up with conspiracy theories.... OF COURSE. However, this scenario is the most believable. Thankfully the kid stayed on the boat.
