I'm not a swimmer, so I can't really relate to entering open water without a life jacket. I guess swimmers think they don't need them, or they get in the way? But you're out in a lake with a four year old, all you're really doing is bobbing around out there. It's not like you're trying to dive down to the bottom or something and a life jacket is preventing you from doing that. I just don't get it, this didn't have to happen....
You are talking to a woman who has laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom and chuckled at catastrophe.

I wore one as a kid but not when I got older. Growing up my dad had a boat and we would go to the lake all the time, fishing or rafting or just riding in the boat. Once I got to be a teenager I never wore a life jacket when in the boat If I went on the raft (that the boat was pulling) my dad made me wear one. But that was the only time.

I agree. I can't imagine having a four year old out in the middle of a lake without a life vest on. Apparently she did this a few times. It caught up to her. I'm glad that the baby survived though.

When I was a teenager, my parents had a little 28 ft Chris Craft. It was at a marina near the Atlantic Ocean and they used to live on it every weekend. I was on it ONCE for like 20 minutes when Dad moved it from the dock to the fuel pumps. I wore a life jacket and my whole family laughed at me but I was genuinely upset that THEY weren't wearing life jackets too. That was my only experience with that boat and they had it for about ten years.

At the tender age of 4, Rivera was already a rising star, playing Hillary Winston on CBS sitcom ?The Royal Family.? She got a Young Artist Award for the role. In 1991, while on that set, she witnessed star Redd Foxx suffer a fatal heart attack at 68.
Apparently 30 years ago Naya Rivera saw the death of Redd Foxx when she was exactly the same age as her child today? as this article saying?

Glee isn't cursed it's just the actors on the set make stupid decisions. No one forced the guy to look at child porn. No one forced the guy to take drugs. No one forced the girl to not wear a life jacket.

I don't believe there's such a thing as curses, just runs of bad circumstances. There were hundreds of named characters on Glee, so even if someone crunched the numbers on whether this is statistically significant, there's no connection between the consequences of addiction, a tragic drowning, and the deliberate choices of a sexual predator.

True I remember watching this argument come out in relation to the song "If I Die Young" originally done by "The Band Perry" later done as a cover for Glee. Somehow thats where the "Glee Curse Conspiracy" came into play. But wait since I was never a fan of the Glee to begin with I figured the Glee Director at the time wanted to address depression on the show. However it ended up into the conspiracy talk though over the show's casts members. If thats the case why hasn't the "The Band Perry" cursed too because they did the original edition and years before the cover was even considered for Glee? But I understand the hardcore fans see their favorite legends gone.

Every time I hear that song it reminds me of my friend, Lauren Giddings. Someone put up a memorial video on YouTube and used that song as background music.

When I realized she was on Royal Family, that was the first thing I thought about. Redd Foxx died on the set; I think it was sitting in a chair. He played her granddad.

If you are wondering why Redd Foxx is trending again 30 years after his death. Its because his death happens to take place when Naya Rivera was 4 years old the same age as her child that was talking to investigators on the whereabouts on Naya. Redd Foxx was like a Grandfather figure to Naya when she was the same age as her child today. Sure I agree there is no direct evidence of a "Glee Curse" or the even a "Redd Foxx Curse" It just happens to be that Naya was hit with some of the unfortunate events within her 30 year career as an actress.

Although Rivera said she had good memories on the set of The Royal Family, there was one memory she had that wasn’t so good. The actor said she was practicing her lines with Foxx one day when something unusual happened.

On October 11, 1991—less than a month after The Royal Family had premiered—Redd and I were running our lines on set. He was sitting in an easy chair, and I was standing on my mark in front of him, when all of a sudden, he kind of slumped over and fell to the floor. For a while, no one moved. One of the producers even yelled, ‘Redd, come on!’ Everyone assumed it was just part of his routine, so we waited patiently for him to stand back up. Except, he didn’t.

[Della Reese] rushed over, leaned down to him, and heard him saying, ‘Get my wife–get my wife.’ Della stood up and started screaming, which jolted everyone in the room into action. He was the first person I knew who died, and I still remember his funeral—which was held in Las Vegas—very vividly. It was open casket. He looked very kingly in a white suit, and it was a fitting tribute to a man who liked to live large.

Naya Rivera was born on January 12, 1987, and grew up in Santa Clarita, California. She entered show business when she was still a toddler, earning a role on the sitcom The Royal Family at the age of four. However, the show was soon beset by tragedy when the comedian John Elroy Sanford (better known by the stage name Redd Foxx), who played her grandfather, had a heart attack on set and then died in the hospital hours later.

“We sat there, his TV family and his real family, all mixed together in the waiting room, praying and trying to comfort one another,” Rivera wrote in her 2016 autobiography, Sorry Not Sorry.

I never knew Redd Foxx's real name was John Sanford. How could I live this long and not know that?

I never knew that either. I guess that's where they got the name for the show.

Actress Naya Rivera had a combination of prescription drugs and alcohol in her system when she drowned while out on Lake Piru with her son, according to a medical examiner's report.

The report obtained by ABC News found therapeutic levels of phentermine, low levels of amphetamine and diazepam, caffeine, and a blood alcohol level of .016%.

Investigators found three 12-ounce cans of White Claw hard seltzer on Rivera's boat. One was empty, another was about three-quarters full and the third was unopened. The remainder of the White Claw 12 pack was found in her car.

Rivera died in July after going boating on Lake Piru with her son.

Investigators say the boy told them they both jumped into the water, counting down 1,2,3. She then pushed him back into the boat, and then at one point put her arm into the air and yelled "help." She then disappeared into the water.

Workers at the lake later found the boat with just her son on board, asleep.

Rivera's mother Maya told investigators that Naya had vertigo that got worse in water.

Phentermine is a stimulant that suppresses the appetite and is used for weight loss. Side effects include possible shortness of breath and increased blood pressure. Diazepam is used to treat anxiety and side effects include weak or shallow breathing, drowsiness, muscle weakness and unusual risk-taking behavior. Amphetamine is a stimulant that is recommended to not be mixed with alcohol. Side effects can include trouble breathing and seizure.

On the boat, investigators found her purse containing her cellphone, syringes with a still-unidentified pink fluid substance, ID and a filled prescription slip for amphetamine.

Her death has been ruled an accidental drowning.

Rivera began acting at a young age, but she rose to national attention playing a lesbian teen on "Glee," which aired from 2009 until 2015 on Fox.

Wow, not exactly how I was expecting this to go.
Now I’m really wondering what is the “still unidentified” pink fluid substance in the syringe.

This doesn't seem as bad as it sounds. The phentermine and amphetamine were prescribed (although that doesn't mean she wasn't abusing them) and the alcohol level is really low.

She had vertigo that got worse in water and yet refused a life jacket when she was going to be in the water with her son? No, not buying it. I think Mom is looking for a reason this happened.

As far as mixing amphetamines with alcohol... it's a drug that practically BEGS to be mixed with alcohol - I didn't even know you could take it sober! Also, is there any drug that is recommended to be mixed with alcohol?

As for the syringes filled with the "pink fluid substance," it might be something completely innocent - possibly cosmetic or veterinarian. I think if it were any kind of drug, they would have identified it by now, or maybe the lab results just aren't back yet.

Agree. They should just take the life insurance money and run. Twenty-six deaths in 61 years.... is that excessive? I'm surprised it's so low, I'd think there would be at least one a year.
