FAIRFIELD ? What was first reported as a Fourth of July drive-by shooting instead proved to be an accidental, self-inflicted wound.

Fairfield police officers responded to the call of the shooting at 9:45 p.m. in the 800 block of Warbler Way.

The victim, a 19-year-old Fairfield resident whose name was not released, told the police that he had been shot by someone in a vehicle.

?As officers continued their investigation, they did not feel the evidence indicated a drive-by shooting took place. Officers located cartridge casings in the street and driveway of a residence, along with a blood trail leading to the backyard. Officers searched the yard and found a rifle that matched the caliber of casings previously located,? a statement released by the Police Department said.

Officers confronted the man at the hospital, and he ?admitted he had accidentally shot himself,? the statement said.

The report is being forwarded to the District Attorney?s Office to determine possible prosecution, including a potential charge of possession of an AR-15-style assault rifle, the police said.

The man could also face charges of negligent discharge of a firearm, and possession of a loaded firearm in public, the police said.

?We are thankful our officers were able to get to the truth of the matter and luckily, this was not a shooting at people,? the police statement said.

?The Police Department would like to remind the public that using firearms during holiday celebrations, specifically to shoot up into the air is dangerous and a crime. What goes up must come down, and you cannot control where bullets shot in the air will fall.?
