LOS ANGELES, CA ' Two little girls shot to death in their home in Watts Wednesday were killed by their father, who turned the gun on himself, taking his own life, police announced Thursday.
The girls ' Angelica Vargas, 6, and Amanda Vargas, 4 ' were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner's office. Their father, whose name has not been released, died at a hospital, police said. Such domestic violence and child abuse tragedies are a major concern for the community during the pandemic as families shelter at home. Authorities worry that many children may be trapped at home with their abusers where teachers and other mandatory reporters can't check on their welfare. A sheriff's spokeswoman said Wednesday's tragedy is a reminder that friends, relatives, neighbors and victims should call police when they suspect abuse.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene in the 9200 block of Success Avenue about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a shooting .
"Our investigation has revealed that the tragedy here today appears to be a murder-suicide with three members of a family deceased," Lt. Kerri Potter of the Los Angeles Police Department's Juvenile Division told reporters at the scene.
"This is a time when I would say that anyone who is a victim or is aware of any victims of domestic violence or child abuse -- you know, realizing that there's still a lot of families that are indoors because of COVID -- anyone who's a witness or a victim please reach out to the police department," Potter said.
