VALLEJO — Police worked overnight Friday and throughout the day Saturday investigating a shooting that left a man dead.
It’s the 13th deadly shooting this year in the city and the third this month, to include one fatal police shooting. The shootings this month have claimed the lives of two men and two women.
Police were called shortly after 9:50 p.m. Friday to investigate a report of a man who was shot and taken in a private vehicle to a local hospital. The man was treated at the hospital but died as a result of his injuries.
The man had been shot at least once, police said Saturday in a press release about the incident.
Detectives and crime scene personnel sealed off part of a residential neighborhood on the 1000 block of Gateway Drive, which police report as the location of the shooting.
The man’s name, age and city of residence were withheld Saturday pending family notification.
This is Vallejo’s 13th reported homicide of the year. They include two incidents of domestic violence that combined left two women and two children dead, as well as the suspected shooters.
The previous homicides, all shooting deaths, include these incidents:
• A 38-year-old Vallejo man was shot and killed shortly after 7 p.m. Feb. 6 at Highland Park at 101 Regents Park Drive. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Jacoby Brandon Brooks
• Police suspect Jacoby Brandon Brooks, 25, of Vallejo, shot and killed a 26-year-old Vallejo woman and their 4-year-old son in a case of domestic violence. Brooks later shot and killed himself. His death is not included in the city’s homicide total for the year. The woman was found shot shortly after 11:52 p.m. Feb. 12 at the intersection of Lewis Brown Road and B.W. Williams Drive. The boy was found early Feb. 13 shot to death on the 500 block of Quartz Lane. Officers found Brooks a short time later in the area southeast of the Quartz Lane crime scene, the victim of what police report as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
• A man was shot and killed shortly after midnight March 12 on the 100 block of El Monte Avenue. He had been shot at least one time and died at the scene, police report.
• A gunshot victim died at a Vallejo hospital after a shooting that was reported at approximately 5 p.m. April 14 in the area of the 1800 block of Ohio Street. Police said the man was taken by private vehicle to the hospital and died there a short time later.
Raymond Thomas Jackson
• Police suspect Raymond Thomas Jackson, 50, shot his 53-year-old domestic partner and her 14-year-old daughter with a shotgun late April 20 inside a home on the 1800 block of Vervais Avenue. The woman’s 12-year-old daughter managed to flee from the home and get help at a neighbor’s home. Police who entered the home shortly after midnight April 21 found the woman and teen girl dead in the home’s living room. Jackson was also dead from what police said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death is not included in the city’s homicide total for the year.
Juan Ayon-Barraza
• Police suspect Juan Ayon-Barraza, 24, shot a 29-year-old Vallejo woman sometime April 16 and dumped her that evening along the side of the freeway in the area of Pinehurst Road and Skyline Boulevard near Moraga. She was hospitalized in critical condition and later died from her injuries. Ayon-Barraza was shot and killed by police later that night after a pursuit that began in Oakland and ended in Richmond. Police report that Ayon-Barraza rammed an Oakland police vehicle, injuring the two officers who were getting out of the vehicle. He then pointed a firearm at officers who responded by firing at Ayon-Barraza and killing him.
• A Vallejo woman was shot and killed shortly after 5:10 p.m. May 22 in the parking lot of a business on the 1600 block of Fairgrounds Drive. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old Vallejo boy was also shot and was hospitalized with what police described at the time as critical injuries.
• A Vallejo police officer shot and killed Sean Monterrosa, 22, of San Francisco, after responding shortly after midnight June 2 to reports of thefts at the Walgreens on the 1000 block of Redwood Street. Police have said the officer, who shot through the windshield of his unmarked police cruiser, thought Monterrosa had a gun and was going to shoot at officers at the scene. There was no gun, but Monterrosa did have what police described as a 15-inch hammer.
• Two women, ages 37 and 63, died as a result of a shooting shortly before 9:50 p.m. June 9 during a toddler’s birthday party at a home on the 100 block of Cynthia Avenue near Amelia Street in north Vallejo. Three other people – a man, a woman and a 10-year-old child – were also shot but survived. Police report the five were shot when a group of people got out of a vehicle and began shooting at those at the party – men women and young children.
