The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is involved in a standoff with the suspect in a Thursday morning homicide in Augusta.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article contained a file photo that was not of the murder suspect Jason Cunningham but of another former Richmond County deputy also named Jason Cunningham, who is unrelated to this story. The Chronicle regrets the error.

According to Maj. Steve Morris, the standoff between deputies and the suspect, Jason 'Moose' Cunningham, began around 10:15 a.m. at the Pointes West Army Resort in Appling. Morris confirmed Cunningham is the suspect in the murder of Nicole Diane Harrington, 37, of Hallandale Beach, Fla., found on the third floor of the parking deck of the convention center in downtown Augusta.

Harrington was found with at least one gunshot wound on the third floor of the parking deck at 9th and Reynolds Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:40 a.m.

Morris said Georgia State Patrol and Columbia County Sheriff deputies are negotiating with Cunningham, who has a gun.

Cunningham is a former Richmond County deputy, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office confirmed. According to his LinkedIn page, he worked at the sheriff's office from Sept. 2001 to Feb. 2018.

According to his Linkedin profile, he owns a property management and security services company, BlueLine Management Services, and used to be the president of the Pittsburgh Steelers fan club, Augusta SteelMasters, before resigning ahead of the 2018 football season.

Stephen Schroeder, who runs the Augusta SteelMasters club Facebook page, met Cunningham back in 2008. He said Cunningham and his father created the club almost 30 years ago.

'He was a great guy. I'm really shocked that he is involved in this situation,' Schroeder said. 'I'm hoping that he is actually not the person that murdered the woman. I'm kind of speechless right now.'

Schroeder said Cunningham was very passionate about the Steelers and everything he did. He said Cunningham broke ties with the club about two years ago after starting to work with ForcesUnited and getting too busy.

In a statement, ForcesUnited Interim CEO and President Victoria Hann confirmed Cunningham worked for the organization handling fundraising and marketing before he resigned in April.

'Jason (Moose) Cunningham is a former employee of Forces United, who handled fundraising and marketing from January 2018 to April 2020. During his tenure, he was dedicated to our mission in serving veterans and very involved in the community,' Hann said. 'We are praying for everyone involved in this situation.'

So there are two Richmond County ex-deputies named Jason Cunningham? Like evil twins or something? What are the odds of that? I wonder if this photo is the good twin or the evil twin?
You are talking to a woman who has laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom and chuckled at catastrophe.

Anyone that likes the Steelers is evil. Ben whatever his last name raped a girl in Milledgeville, GA.
The former is a joke. I don't care about football enough to care what team you root for. I do hate UGA. Almost everyone in Georgia is a bandwagon fan including my husband's family. No wonder they're so stupid. Lol!

Murder suspect confirms affair with victim, facing charges after 8-hour standoff

    https://www.wrdw.com/2020/06/19/ques...ying-standoff/

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — A murder suspect is behind bars for the killing of his girlfriend, after an almost eight-hour standoff with deputies on Thursday.

Jason Cunningham, a former Richmond County sheriff’s deputy, is wanted in connection with the shooting death of a woman who was found dead in a downtown Augusta parking deck.

Nicole Harrington, 37, of Hallandale Beach, Fla., was found shot to death in the parking deck of the Augusta Convention Center around 6 a.m. Thursday.

News 12 obtained an affidavit stating that Cunningham told investigators he was having an affair with the victim, Nicole Harrington and went to meet her in the parking lot to end it. He said she “became irate,” and the two started to argue. He said she was loud, and he “didn’t know what to do.” He confessed to shooting her in the back of the head as she got into the elevator.

“Around 9:45 this morning, we received a call from Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, telling us that they had credible information that the murder suspect was in this area near the lake,” Captain Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, said, yesterday.

Later in the morning, dozens of deputies from Richmond and Columbia counties, Fort Gordon Military Police and the Georgia Department of Public Safety responded to the Pointes West Army Resort near Clarks Hill Lake after Cunningham’s vehicle was spotted there.

Investigators say the standoff started when Cunningham pointed a loaded weapon. At 5:43 p.m. officials confirmed that Cunningham was taken into custody. Two loaded guns were found in his possession after he surrendered.

“Time is our friend so we’re willing to wait it out and we were successful today,” Captain Morris said, yesterday.

He has been booked into Richmond County jail, according to jail records. Cunningham faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

Cunningham was a Richmond County deputy before leaving the job in February 2018.

He also handled fundraising and marketing at Forces United, resigning less than two months ago. A statement from the organization read: “During his tenure, he was dedicated to our mission in serving veterans and very involved in the community. We are praying for everyone involved in this situation.”

A friend says Cunningham is a good father and husband.

“I know what’s going on in the media right now and people are saying on FB is a bad image of him, but he’s not,” Jeff Pagac said.

Her autopsy is scheduled for today at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation lab. She was the second homicide victim of the morning in Augusta, but the cases are apparently not related.

Messages of condolences to the grieving family and friends of Nicole Harrington circled Facebook, remembering her as a mom, sister, and friend.
