The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is involved in a standoff with the suspect in a Thursday morning homicide in Augusta.
June 18, 2020
According to Maj. Steve Morris, the standoff between deputies and the suspect, Jason 'Moose' Cunningham, began around 10:15 a.m. at the Pointes West Army Resort in Appling. Morris confirmed Cunningham is the suspect in the murder of Nicole Diane Harrington, 37, of Hallandale Beach, Fla., found on the third floor of the parking deck of the convention center in downtown Augusta.
Harrington was found with at least one gunshot wound on the third floor of the parking deck at 9th and Reynolds Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:40 a.m.
Morris said Georgia State Patrol and Columbia County Sheriff deputies are negotiating with Cunningham, who has a gun.
Cunningham is a former Richmond County deputy, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office confirmed. According to his LinkedIn page, he worked at the sheriff's office from Sept. 2001 to Feb. 2018.
According to his Linkedin profile, he owns a property management and security services company, BlueLine Management Services, and used to be the president of the Pittsburgh Steelers fan club, Augusta SteelMasters, before resigning ahead of the 2018 football season.
Stephen Schroeder, who runs the Augusta SteelMasters club Facebook page, met Cunningham back in 2008. He said Cunningham and his father created the club almost 30 years ago.
'He was a great guy. I'm really shocked that he is involved in this situation,' Schroeder said. 'I'm hoping that he is actually not the person that murdered the woman. I'm kind of speechless right now.'
Schroeder said Cunningham was very passionate about the Steelers and everything he did. He said Cunningham broke ties with the club about two years ago after starting to work with ForcesUnited and getting too busy.
In a statement, ForcesUnited Interim CEO and President Victoria Hann confirmed Cunningham worked for the organization handling fundraising and marketing before he resigned in April.
'Jason (Moose) Cunningham is a former employee of Forces United, who handled fundraising and marketing from January 2018 to April 2020. During his tenure, he was dedicated to our mission in serving veterans and very involved in the community,' Hann said. 'We are praying for everyone involved in this situation.'
