Police in northern Washington state are investigating a double murder and suicide that left a brother and sister dead along with a man police say sought a relationship with the sister, the Sequim Gazette reported.

Law enforcement responded to the home in Sequim, a town on Sequim Bay in the far north of the state, to a report of an assault in progress and gunshots fired early Thursday morning. The person who called said there were seven people in the home at the time, some of them children.

Clallam County Sheriff's deputies and Sequim Police officers got four of the people out of the home and tried to talk with the suspected shooter. When he didn't respond, they entered the home and found three people dead.

The victims were identified as Samantha Faber, 34, and her brother James Faber, Jr., 32. The suspected shooter, who was also found dead, was identified as Jacob M. Hunter, 25.

On Friday, the sheriff's office said that witnesses indicated to detectives that Hunter was upset that Samantha Farber rejected his attempts to start a romantic relationship.

'Statements also indicate that James Faber Jr. was shot when he ran towards the gunfire in an attempt to stop Jacob Hunter, and or render aid to his sister Samantha,' the office said.

Hunter used a handgun, according to Brian King, chief criminal deputy of the sheriff's office.

Investigators said the home belonged to the Farbers, and Hunter had been living there. Staff Sergeant John Keegan said the other four people in the house were related to the victims. He did not say how many were children or describe their ages.
