Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean (40) and her 8-year-old son Gideon believed drowned in a canoeing accident

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend's daughter and grandson missing in canoeing accident

The grandson and adult daughter of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend went missing after the pair's canoe apparently capsized in the Chesapeake Bay, authorities said Friday.

Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, 40, and her 8-year-old son Gideon were canoeing in Anne Arundel, Maryland, Gov. Larry Hogan told reporters on Friday, adding that the search was ongoing.

The potential tragedy unfolded late Thursday afternoon in waters near the pair's Shady Side, Maryland home, about 25 miles south of Annapolis, officials said.

"I have some other sad news to share," Gov. Larry Hogan told reporters. "Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend's daughter, Maeve, and her 8-year-old grandson Gideon went missing after canoeing yesterday afternoon on the south river here in Anne Arundel. An intensive search has been underway since late yesterday."

Hogan added: "I reached out to and spoke with Lt. Gov. Townsend this morning and on behalf of the people of Maryland I expressed our most heartfelt sympathies and prayers to her and to her entire family during this difficult time."

A Maryland Department of Natural Resources statement said a preliminary investigation "revealed that the pair may have been paddling the canoe from a residence in Shady Side, MD out into the bay to retrieve a ball and were unable to paddle back to shore."

An overturned canoe, approximately matching the description the pair were in, was later found, the department said.

Rescuers from the Natural Resources Police, Maryland State Police, U.S. Coast Guard and local police and fire departments continued their search on Friday, officials said.

Kennedy Townsend comes from one of the most famous political clans in U.S. history. She?s the oldest daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and niece of former President John F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy.

She served two terms of lieutenant governor of Maryland.

Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean is executive director of Georgetown University's Global Health Initiative.

The missing woman got into a very public spat last year with her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., over his son's skepticism of vaccines. She, her mother and former U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II penned a tough editorial taking Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to task.

"He helped to spread dangerous misinformation and is complicit in sowing distrust of the science behind vaccines," they wrote. "We love Bobby. However, on vaccines he is wrong."

Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, 40, and her 8-year-old son Gideon drowned after a boating accident. The mother and son were in quarantine at the family?s Maryland estate.

Robert F. Kennedy?s granddaughter Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, 40, and her 8-year-old son Gideon were have died. The mother and son drowned after they were reported missing following a canoeing accident in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia on April 2, according to the New York Post. Maeve and Gideon?s bodies were discovered after an intensive search that began later Thursday night, April 2, about 24 hours after they went missing according to authorities.

Maeve?s husband David McKean confirmed his wife and son disappeared on Thursday in a brief interview with the Washington Post. According to David, children were kicking a ball back and forth when the ball went into the water. That?s when he said his wife and son ?popped into a canoe to chase it down. They just got farther out than they could handle and couldn?t get back in.? Maeve and Gideon were sucked into the South River, where they tragically drowned, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said. While Maeve?s husband declined to confirm if the canoe was discovered, it was confirmed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources police that one matching the description was found.

In addition to David?s statement, Governor Larry Hogan confirmed the disappearance of Maeve and Gideon in a press conference on Friday, April 2. The Kennedy family issued a statement through a spokesman Alan Fleischmann. ?At this time, our family asks for privacy and that everyone keep Maeve and Gideon in their prayers,? the statement said.

Maeve and Gideon are the daughter and grandson of former Maryland Lt. Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsen., who served as lieutenant gov. of Maryland from 1995 to 2003. Townsend is the eldest daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968 while running for president, and the niece of President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated three years earlier in Dallas. Maeve was the executive director of the Georgetown University Global Health Initiative. Gideon was her only child.

Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by the tragic deaths of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean and her son Gideon. This story is still developing.

A grand-niece of President John F. Kennedy and her son drowned after rowing into the rough Chesapeake Bay in Maryland to recover a soccer ball, authorities and witnesses said Friday.

Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, and her 8-year-old son, Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean, got into the canoe around 4 p.m. Thursday outside her mother's home in Shady Side, according to the Washington Post.

The child had been kicking a ball with other kids when it fell into the water, and the pair went to retrieve it amid high winds, her husband, David McKean, told the paper.

'[They] popped into a canoe to chase it down. They just got farther out than they could handle, and couldn't get back in,' David McKean said.

The pair was later sucked into the South River where they drowned, Gov. Larry Hogan said at a press conference Friday.

McKean, 40, is the daughter of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who she was visiting when the tragedy struck.

A concerned person called authorities around 4:30 p.m. Thursday to say he had seen the canoe near the Columbia Beach pier, according to Capt. Erik Kornmeyer, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

The caller reported that boaters were 'seen struggling to return to shore in a canoe' near Herring Bay amid high winds before vanishing, the Coast Guard said.

Rescuers searched for the missing pair until nightfall Thursday and began again Friday morning, to no avail. A spokesman for the US Coast Guard told the Washington Post the wind in that part of the bay reached about 30 mph Thursday afternoon, with waves 2 to 3 feet high.

The Kennedy family has been plagued by tragedies ranging from the assassinations of McKean's grandfather and great-uncle to the death of her cousin Saoirse Kennedy Hill last year.

Couldn't they just buy a new ball? They're Kennedys. Foolish decisions will get you. Poor kid.

The Kennedys seem to have a tragically short life span. Assassination, plane crash, etc.
