An 'extremist' planning to blow up a Missouri hospital to inflict mass casualties during the coronavirus pandemic was killed this week during a shootout with FBI agents, authorities said.

The incident unfolded Tuesday when the FBI moved to arrest 36-year-old Timothy Wilson in Belton, Mo., "at the conclusion of a long-running domestic terrorism investigation," the federal agency said.

As part of the sting, Wilson was led to believe he was going to pick up a vehicle packed with explosives, according to officials.

As the feds were attempting to arrest Wilson, who was armed, he was shot and taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Wilson had been the target of a months-long investigation in which he was revealed to be a "potentially violent extremist, motivated by racial, religious, and anti-government animus," the FBI said.

He was plotting to commit a bombing over the course of several months and as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic gripping the nation, Wilson "decided to accelerate his plan to use a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device in an attempt to cause severe harm and mass casualties," according to the feds.

Wilson "considered many various targets and ultimately settled on an area hospital in an attempt to harm many people, targeting a facility that is providing critical medical care in today's environment," the FBI said.

Federal officials say Wilson had taken the necessary steps to acquire the materials needed to build an explosive device.

The vehicle that Wilson was on his way to pick up before authorities tried to arrest him had no actual bomb, according to the FBI.
