Jason Varnish (46) was asphyxiated when his coat became entangled in a ski lift

A New Jersey man was asphyxiated this week after he became entangled in his coat on a Colorado ski lift, according to authorities and news reports.

Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis told the Vail Daily that Jason Varnish of Short Hills, New Jersey, accidentally fell through a gap created by a chair that was in its folded position.

"The coat ended up going around his head and neck area," she said.

The Vail Mountain resort said in a statement that the man, 46, was killed Thursday "when the guest attempted to load the Skyline Express lift."

Ski patrol members performed CPR before the skier was taken to Vail Health hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the resort said.

The destination's operators are investigating, and the section where it happened, known as Blue Sky Basin, was closed for about 24 hours before reopening Friday, according to Associated Press.

"The lift has been thoroughly inspected and is operating normally," the resort's statement reads.

Vail Mountain's operating chief, Beth Howard, said in a statement Wednesday skiers and snowboarders there were experiencing unusually long lines as a result of "a Top 5 snowfall event in our 58-year history."

New Jersey skier (Jason Varnish, 46) suffocates to death on Colorado chairlift

A man from New Jersey suffocated to death at a Colorado ski resort when he fell through a gap in a chairlift and became trapped with his coat wrapped around his neck, officials said.

The freak accident occurred last Thursday at Vail Mountain?s Blue Sky Basin area, resulting in the death of 46-year-old Jason Varnish, of Short Hills, according to the Vail Daily.

An autopsy concluded Varnish died of positional asphyxia, according to Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis, the report said.

An initial investigation determined the chairlift?s folding seat was upright, leaving a gap. When Varnish slipped through, his coat got caught on the chair, trapping his airway.

?The coat ended up going around his head and neck area putting his neck in a position that compromised his airway,? Bettis told the paper.

Blue Sky Basin temporarily closed after the death, but reopened by midday Friday.

?We take all incidents seriously and are conducting a full investigation,? Vail Resorts said in a statement.

?The lift has been thoroughly inspected and is operating normally.?
