Kobe Bryant (41), Gianna Bryant (13), Payton Chester, Sarah Chester, Christina Mauser, John Altobelli (56), Alyssa Altobelli, Keri Altobelli and Ara Zoyban confirmed dead after helicopter crash

Kobe Bryant died in a helicoper crash in Calabasas Sunday morning ... TMZ Sports has confirmed.

Kobe was traveling with at least 3 other people in his private helicopter when it went down. A fire broke out. Emergency personnel responded, but nobody on board survived. 5 people are confirmed dead. We're told Vanessa Bryant was not among those on board.

Eyewitnesses also tell us that they heard the helicopter's engine sputtering before it went down. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Kobe has famously used a helicopter to travel for years -- dating back to when he played for the Lakers. He was known for commuting from Newport Beach, CA to the STAPLES Center in DTLA in his Sikorsky S-76 chopper.

KB is survived by his wife Vanessa, and their four daughters -- Gianna, Natalia and Bianca and their newborn Capri.

Kobe has recently been spotted out at NBA games with his daughter Gianna -- a rising star basketball player herself. Their youngest daughter, Capri, was just born in June 2019.

The Lakers famously retired both of Kobe's jerseys, number 8 and 24 ... the only player in team history to receive that honor.

Kobe's accomplishments stand far outside of the basketball world. He won an Oscar for his short film, "Dear Basketball," in 2018.

I wonder who the other passengers were.

All I have seen is that they are saying it wasn't his wife and/or kids.

ETA: that's what I originally saw, now I am seeing his daughter and one of her teammates and their parents may have been on board, so who knows.

12:35 PM PT -- Kobe's daughter Gianna Maria Onore -- aka GiGi -- was also on board the helicopter and died in the crash ... reps for Kobe tell TMZ Sports. She was 13.

We're told they were on their way to the Mamba Academy for a basketball practice when the crash occurred. The Academy is in nearby Thousand Oaks.

According to TMZ, the pair was traveling to the Mamba Academy in Thousand Oaks, California, for a basketball practice when the crash occurred. They were among at least five people confirmed dead in the accident, including another player and parent. Bryant's wife, Vanessa, is not thought to be among them.

Bryant's legacy not only in the NBA but across the world of sports cannot be understated, and he passed his love of the game on to Gianna. They had been spotted sitting courtside at NBA games in recent months, and Kobe had stated in the past that she aspired to one day play college basketball for UConn.

There was extremely low visibility at the time of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and eight other people, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

The conditions were foggy and cloudy with a drizzle, Guy said.

"Relative humidity was 100% meaning the air was like soup," Guy added.

The fog and subsequent pollution from wildfires was also lingering in the air.
The helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others that crashed today was built in 1991 according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The helicopter, a Sikorsky S-76B, is registered to Island Express Holding Corp., according to a FAA registry database.

The helicopter crashed on a hillside in Calabasas, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
Orange Coast College (OCC) baseball coach John Altobelli, 56, his daughter Alyssa Altobelli and wife Keri Altobelli were aboard the helicopter with Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna when it crashed Sunday morning in Calabasas, CA, Altobelli’s brother Tony Altobelli told CNN.

Gianna and Alyssa were teammates at the Mamba Academy and were flying from Orange County to Thousand Oaks to attend a game, OCC assistant coach Ron La Ruffa told CNN.
Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva says that nine people — the pilot and eight others — were aboard the helicopter that crashed earlier today in Calabasas, California.

The Sheriff did not identify anyone on the flight, saying it was "entirely inappropriate" to do so at this time until the coroner made the identification to the next of kin.

Today has been a terrible blow to the NBA family.
I don't really follow basketball, but I know Kobe was up there with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
I guess I don't know much about helicopters, but it surprises me that 9 people could fit in one.
I thought maybe 4-5 people at the most.
May all the victims rest in peace!

This surprised me as well. Totally didnt think they had ones that held more than 5 people.

    Edit to add names:
Gianna's basketball teammates Alyssa Altobelli and Payton Chester, Alyssa's parents John and Keri Altobelli, Payton's mother Sarah Chester, girls' basketball coach Christina Mauser and pilot Ara Zobayan also died

This particular helicopter seated 14 including the pilots. Some military helicopters can handle 90+ people... More about Kobi's chopper: https://heavy.com/sports/2020/01/sik...x-kobe-bryant/

It's funny that when it all broke they were saying Kobe was piloting it. I looked...he doesn't even have an faa license. The guy who they are now saying was the pilot was instrument rated, which means he could fly in marginal weather if he couldn't see-depending on how bad it was because there are still limits.

This death really hit me hard, especially after knowing his 13 year old daughter was with him. Flying terrifies me.

When I first told my husband, his reaction was "No fucking way. That has to be fake." It was just so out of the blue....as I guess most tragedies are.

I thought I saw somewhere his helicopter seated 8...but don't quote me on that. Still, regardless of the number of people, I think weight is the main thing.

The link Puzz added has the details of the helicopter and it states that it can hold up to 14 people, including 2 pilots

Oh ok, thanks. Couldn't remember if I read it or saw it on TV. With all the craziness yesterday, there was so much misinformation.

I don’t think she’s going to have a job for much longer.

Has anyone seen the crash video? Someone sent it to me on Facebook but I'm not sure if it's real.

It's disgusting when people try to make a profit from posting dead celebrities' autopsies or accident scenes.
I heard they had to shut down the air space above where the helicopter crashed, because of news helicopters and drones.

I'm pretty sure lawsuits are about to start pouring in due to pilot error.
I know he was licensed to fly in bad conditions, but dude, use some common sense!

I'm sure it will be labeled pilot error, and no doubt he probably shouldn't have been flying. However, I know many pilots that HATE to fly for VIPs because these VIPs are not used to hearing the word no, and they will push their pilots to fly when they have no business flying. There have been many cashes that have happened because pilots were afraid of losing their job, and they let themselves be pushed into going against their better judgement. Not saying that's the case here, but I certainly wonder. Kobe and passengers had to be at a certain place at a certain time, and it was probably already too late to go by car by the time they were scheduled to fly. I can't help but wonder if they pushed the pilot to go.
