Spring Thaw Prompts Renewed Search for Oregon Mother Malina Nickel Who Vanished on Thanksgiving

Malina Nickel, the young mother from Shady Cove, Oregon, was last seen at her home on the night of November 23, 2016 by her 18-year-old nephew.

Malina worked at the local Subway restaurant, and Chareen became even more concerned when her daughter didn't show up to work that Saturday to pick up her paycheck.

On Monday, November 28, 2016, after Malina missed her shift at work, Chareen called the Jackson County Sheriff's department and reported her daughter missing.

"I wish I didn't wait? before I called," said Chareen. "But she is an adult."

According to Malina's family, she had problems with drugs including opioids and had recently starting using heroin.

At the time of her disappearance, Malina was on probation and had a warrant out for her arrest, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's department.

But, as Chareen told Dateline, "She would never just leave her children. She has never been gone more than a day."

Chareen said that she was worried police would dismiss her concerns and say that Malina was just off partying.

However, Detective Gabe Burchfiel from the Jackson County Sheriff's office confirmed that Malina's disappearance seemed suspicious.

Family releases balloons for anniversary of Malina Nickel's disappearance

On Thursday morning, Malina's family and friends gathered at her family's home to release a little more than a dozen balloons.

Her mother, Chareen, says this Thanksgiving without Malina is not the same, but the family has been able to start the healing process over the past year.

"We're thankful for what we have and all of that, but yet it's not going to be a happy, thankful day," Chareen said. "It's really broken this family up."

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office also posted a reminder earlier this week that Malina has been missing for a year.
The only substantial lead has been finding Malina's car just a few days after she went missing. Chareen says it's difficult to get people to come forward with information. She believes people will say they know something, then deny it because they do not want to "snitch."

Southern Oregon mother Malina Nickel vanished the day before Thanksgiving 2016. Malina’s mother, Chareen, knew something was wrong when her daughter didn’t show up, as planned, for dinner. She was last seen at her home on the night of November 23 by her 18-year-old nephew. At the time of her disappearance, Malina was on probation and had a warrant out for her arrest, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Family members insist that the 29-year-old would not leave her children. This remains an open and active case but no persons of interest have been named. Anyone with information regarding Malina’s case is urged to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department at 541-774-6800.

There are 19 missing person cases open and unsolved right now in Jackson County.

The searches this last weekend were related to the case of Malina Nickel who’s been missing since Fall of 2016.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Sergeant Scott Waldon says the office received a tip her remains could be buried off 227, but unfortunately deputies couldn’t find anything.
“One of the biggest ones right now is the Malina Nickel case we’re working because that’s been so active, and we’re constantly getting tips about that case,” Sergeant Waldon said.

Malina Nickel went missing from Shady Cove just before Thanksgiving in 2016.

Sergeant Waldon says he frequently receives tips about her case.

A recent one prompted a search in Trail over the weekend.

“We were given a tip about her possibly being buried off of 227. And we went up there and searched some areas we were given. Unfortunately, we didn’t find anything. I was acually pretty excited about that tip and thought we were maybe going to get something out of it,” Sergeant Waldon said.

Forensic testing of remains found in the woods along Highway 227 have confirmed that they belonged to missing Shady Cove woman Malina Lynn Nickel, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators discovered the skeletal remains on November 12 near the border between Douglas and Jackson counties. Nickel had been reported missing on November 23 of 2016, almost three years earlier.

However, the discovery stemmed from a separate murder investigation. Just days before the discovery of Nickel's remains, investigators found the body of 20-year-old Destiny Finch. Her roommate, 21-year-old Shane Wayman, was charged with Finch's murder.

On November 20, the Sheriff's Office confirmed that Nickel was Wayman's aunt, and alleged that he had been involved in her disappearance three years earlier. The agency also revealed that it had found remains believed to be Nickel's along Highway 227.

Nickel's remains were taken to the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office and delivered to the care of Dr. Nici Vance, the state's forensic anthropologist.

In addition to charges related to Finch's murder, Wayman was charged with two counts of criminal mistreatment in the first degree and one count of abuse of a corpse in the second degree for his alleged involvement in Nickel's death and the disposal of her body. At the time, the Sheriff's Office said, the charges were based on circumstantial evidence found at the scene that "tentatively identified" the remains as belonging to Nickel.

"I'm standing by my Shane, I'm heartbroken on both behalfs," Chareen Nickel, Malina's mother, told NewsWatch 12 in November. Shane Wayman is her grandson. "I'm heartbroken for my daughter and I'm heartbroken for Shane."

"As a Christian it's our duty to forgive everyone, no matter what they did," Chareen continued. "It's not up to us to judge."

Earlier this week, Sheriff's Office detectives received the lab report from Oregon State Police for the skeletal remains that had been submitted for DNA analysis. According to the agency, the tests confirmed that the remains are Nickel's.

Nickel was 30 years old when she disappeared.
