A 22-year-old New York state activist and campaign manager died just two days after being diagnosed with the flu, according to a report.

Rebekah Grohl, who was a human rights activist, died Sunday after being rushed over the weekend to the hospital, the Times Herald-Record reported.

The Newburgh resident worked as a campaign manager for Orange County legislator Kevindaryan Lujan and graduated from SUNY Orange with an associate?s degree in 2018, the report said.

She was diagnosed with the flu Friday and brought to Montefiore St. Luke?s Cornwall Hospital, where doctors decided she should be airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, the outlet reported.

The weather, however, proved too bad to fly her, so they attempted to drive her there in an ambulance, the newspaper reported.

But the ambulance ended up taking her to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, where she suffered brain swelling and multiple heart attacks, the outlet said.

She died Sunday at the hospital, though the precise cause of her death hasn?t been announced yet, the outlet said.

Lujan paid tribute to the campaign manager on Facebook in the wake of her death.

?Her light was unlike any other I have ever seen,? Lujan wrote on Facebook. ?She inspired people to care about their community and to help them find their voice. At 22 years old she had knocked on more doors than people three times her age will ever do in a lifetime. She cared deeply about her community and was dedicated to seeing it change for the better.?
