The Idaho attorney general has agreed to investigate the mother of two missing children and her new husband in connection with the death of his first wife. The mystery of the children’s disappearance and the deaths of three people close to the couple, including their spouses, has sparked investigations in several states and worldwide headlines.

Tammy Daybell’s death on Oct. 19, 2019, was described in her obituary as being from natural causes, and her husband Chad Daybell reportedly told authorities that she died in her sleep. But law enforcement became suspicious when he married Lori Vallow about two weeks later, and in December authorities had Daybell’s body exhumed. Autopsy and toxicology tests have not been released.

Investigators say the tangled case includes two other mysterious deaths. Lori Daybell’s estranged late husband, Charles Vallow, was shot and killed by her brother, Alex Cox, in Phoenix last July. Cox, who said the shooting was in self-defense, then died of unknown causes several months later.
Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden agreed last week to take over the investigation of Tammy Daybell’s death after a request from a local prosecutor, according to documents the Associated Press obtained through a public record request.

Fremont County prosecutor Marcia Murdoch asked Wasden’s office this month to consider the possibility of filing conspiracy, attempted murder and murder charges against Lori and Chad Daybell in Tammy Daybell’s death. The attorney general had initially turned down the request citing a lack of resources, according to Murdoch.

Scott Graf, the attorney general’s spokesman, said that when Murdoch first made the request it wasn’t clear if the state office would have the capacity to take over the case, based on current and anticipated caseloads. The attorney general’s office asked Murdoch to see if other county-level prosecutors were available to take over the case first.

None of the other county prosecutors she approached were able to take the case, Murdoch told the state office when she made the request again on April 7.

“I am again requesting that the AG’s office take over this case because my office does not have the resources or the experience to handle the case,” Murdoch wrote in the letter obtained by the Associated Press. “We would be willing to assist in any way to help the AG’s office, as needed at your request and at your discretion.”

It’s not yet clear if the attorney general’s decision to take over the case will have an impact on Daybell’s request to have her $1 million bond reduced on the child abandonment charges. A judge in eastern Idaho is set to consider that request on Friday.

In an exclusive report on Court TV Live on Tuesday night, journalist Ashleigh Banfield uncovered the mysterious death of Vallow's older sister, Stacey Lynn Cox Cope, who died suddenly in 1998 at the age of 31. Her cause of death was undetermined.

"You can look at one death as a coincidence," Banfield tells PEOPLE, "but these people have had a trail of deaths that seemed natural, and are now under investigation. This may be yet another one."

Authorities are currently taking a renewed look at several other deaths surrounding Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell.

Vallow's fourth husband, Charles, was shot to death during a July 2019 altercation by her brother, Alex Cox, who claimed he was acting in self-defense and was never charged. Three months later, Chad's wife, Tammy, was found dead in her bed -- a death police later called "suspicious." Her body has been exhumed.

In December, Alex Cox was found dead at his girlfriend's house. Authorities have performed an autopsy and the cause of death is still pending.

In addition, Cox has been alleged as a possible participant in a non-fatal drive-by shooting of Brandon Boudreaux, whose former wife, Melani, is Lori's adult niece -- and the daughter of her dead sister, Stacey Cox Cope.

Robert Jarvis and Garrett Smith, the attorneys for Melani — now Melani Pawlowski — previously issued a joint statement to PEOPLE denying “the innuendoes and allegations … that she has been involved in any wrongdoing.”

“She has cooperated with the FBI thoroughly,” Smith told PEOPLE.

The children still remain missing, and Vallow is jailed in Madison County, Idaho, on felony counts of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children, as well as resisting or obstructing officers, criminal solicitation to commit a crime, contempt of court and willful disobedience of court process or order for failing to produce the children. She is being held on $1 million bond.

Vallow and Daybell are now officially under investigation for possible murder, attempted murder and conspiracy charges.

A pulmonary blood clot killed the brother of an Idaho woman who’s facing charges in the disappearance of her children — a case that attracted worldwide attention with revelations of her doomsday beliefs and connection to three mysterious deaths.

Autopsy and toxicology reports were released Friday for Alex Cox, who died in Arizona in December. In July, Cox fatally shot his sister’s estranged husband, Charles Vallow, in what he said was self-defense.

Police in Gilbert, Arizona, say detectives investigating Cox's death will review the autopsy report and that the case is still active.

The estranged husband of Lori Vallow, the Idaho mom facing trial on charges stemming from the baffling disappearance of her two children, told police she "lost her mind" and threatened to kill him roughly six months before he was fatally shot by her brother, according to police bodycam footage obtained exclusively by ABC News.

Charles Vallow, according to the footage, told a Gilbert, Arizona, police officer in January 2019 that his then-wife, Lori, had been behaving erratically, withdrawing large amounts from their bank account and threatening his life.

"'I will kill you because you're not Charles, and nobody will care,'" Charles Vallow told police of the threat Lori allegedly made to him, according to the bodycam footage obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.

He said Lori kept referring to him as "Nick Schneider," a name he was unfamiliar with.

"It's the name she used. I don't know where it came from. I'm just like ... I'm as bewildered as you are," Charles Vallow said in the video.

The footage adds another layer to the mysterious case opened in November when extended family members contacted Rexburg, Idaho, police to request a welfare check on Lori Vallow's two children, Joshua "JJ" Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 17. Police have been searching for the children ever since and suspect their mother has something to do with their disappearance.

Lori Vallow’s long-missing son JJ has reportedly been matched to one of the sets of remains found on her husband Chad Daybell’s Idaho property Tuesday.

The 8-year-old boy’s grandmother confirmed the news to local outlet Fox 10 Wednesday, minutes after Daybell’s bond was set at $1 million in a virtual hearing.

Police have still not confirmed the identification of the bodies, but prosecutor Ron Wood said during the hearing that both sets of human remains likely belonged to children.

Wood said the concealment of one of the bodies was “particularly egregious,” but provided no further details.

Chad Daybell's neighbor describes 'strange' behavior after JJ and Tylee's disappearance

SALEM, Idaho -- A neighbor who lives across the street from Chad Daybell is describing what he saw in the months after two children went missing. The remains of those children were discovered on Daybell's property.

Family members confirmed the remains recovered by Rexburg police and the FBI belong to Joshua JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan. JJ would have recently turned 8 years old, and Tylee was 17.

Both disappeared at different times from Rexburg, Idaho, last September.

Matthew Price said he's lived across the street from Chad Daybell, the entire time Chad and his family have lived in Idaho. He's been following the investigation into the missing children, and the suspicions that centered on his neighbor.

"We've been very concerned the whole time for JJ and Tylee," Matthew said.

He watched out his windows and from his yard as law enforcement spent two days digging in Chad's yard, and searching the property.

Matthew recognized the area where investigators brought in a backhoe to dig a deep hole, where it appears they recovered the children's remains.

Now that he thinks back, he is remembering some incidents that stand out in that exact spot.

"We noticed they were having a few bonfires that were kind of out of the ordinary," he explained. "They had a big bonfire last fall, and they had two or three big bonfires this spring."

Newly released court documents are shedding light on the disappearance of Joshua "J.J." Vallow and Tylee Ryan, whose remains were found last week on Chad Daybell's property in Idaho.

A probable cause affidavit for Daybell's arrest, filed June 10 in Madison County, outlines what led investigators to Daybell's home and ultimately to the remains of the missing children. This includes cell phone location data of the kids' uncle Alex Cox around the time of their disappearance, as well as text messages Daybell sent to his wife at the time.

Tylee, 17, was last seen Sep. 8, 2019 at Yellowstone National Park, while J.J., 7, was last seen on the 22nd. The FBI's Cellular Analysis Survey Team discovered through Cox's cell phone GPS that he was at Daybell's home on Sep. 9 and 23.

Cox, the brother of the kids' mother Lori Vallow Daybell, was with the two kids and their mom in Yellowstone that day, verified through photos. They returned home to Rexburg around 8:30 that night.

Between 2:42 a.m. and 3:37 a.m. Sep. 9, Cox’s phone was at Lori and the kids’ apartment. He lived in a separate apartment in the same complex. They had moved there from Arizona on or around Sep. 1.

“This is significant, not only because he was there in the middle of the night, but also because this is the only time in September he appears to go over to Lori’s between midnight and 6 a.m.,” the probable cause statement read.

Later that same morning, GPS data indicates that Cox went to Chad Daybell’s home in Salem — specifically outside near the east end of a barn on the property. He appeared to have been on the property from 9:21 a.m. to 11:39 a.m.

The FBI also discovered text messages between Tammy and Chad Daybell, who were married at the time. Tammy died on Oct. 19, 2019, and Chad married Lori just weeks later.

On Sep. 9 at 11:53 a.m., Chad sent a text message to Tammy that said:

“Well, I've had an interesting morning! I felt I should bum all of the limb debris by the fire pit before it got too soaked by the coming storms. While I did so, I spotted a big racoon along the fence. I hurried and got my gun, and he was still walking along. I got close enough that one shot did the trick. He is now in our pet cemetery. Fun times!”

Investigators spoke to Tammy’s sister about a week before serving a search warrant on Daybell’s property, who confirmed that the couple had a “pet cemetery” on their land. She also confirmed its location to investigators on an aerial photograph. The location was near a firepit where Cox’s phone location was pinged.

Cox’s phone was again pinged to Daybell’s property on Sep. 23, the day after J.J. was last seen.

J.J. was last seen on Sep. 22 at his home by two of Lori’s friends who were visiting. The next morning, the friends asked Lori where J.J. was, and she told them Cox had come and taken him after he was “acting like a zombie” — which the friends also say Lori had said about Tylee several months before.

Cox’s cell phone was again located at Daybell’s property on the morning of Sep. 23 from 9:55 a.m. to 10:12 a.m. The location was specifically pinged to a pond on the northern edge of Daybell’s property.

Investigators also noted that Cox was at Daybell’s home two other times: Sep. 6 and Sep. 25, these times inside Daybell’s house and not at the firepit or pond.

After discovering this information, investigators obtained and executed a search warrant on Daybell’s property on June 9. They dug in the two locations where Cox’s phone location showed him on the two days after each child’s disappearance and found both their remains.
