Allyson Watterson (21) was found dead 6 months after she went missing

    https://nypost.com/2019/12/27/intere...on-hiker-cops/

A 20-year-old woman went missing while hiking with her boyfriend in Oregon ? and authorities said Thursday they found ?some interesting items and clues? while searching for her.

Allyson Watterson and her boyfriend Benjamin Garland, 21, were hiking in a wooded area about 18 miles outside Portland on Sunday when he claims the two became separated, according to ABC News.

Garland was later found sleeping in his truck by a resident. He returned to the hiking area with his father to search for Watterson, but couldn?t find her, the report said.

The boyfriend and his dad then notified Watterson?s family, who reported her missing on Monday.

Garland was later arrested on several charges not related to the disappearance of his girlfriend, the report said.

Since then, trained search and rescue teams have fanned out across the area looking for Watterson ? even on Christmas Day.

On Thursday, when the new discovery was made, an Oregon National Guard helicopter with heat-sensing cameras was being used to aid the search.

?[We] have found some interesting items and clues that we?re going to try to find out more information tomorrow with a different type of search,? Washington County Sheriff?s Deputy Tony Morris said at a press conference.

?I?m not free to say what it is at this point. Just know that it?s something that?s going to change the type of searching we?re doing.?

Watterson?s parents were grateful for the search efforts.

Search and rescue crews will refocus their efforts after finding new clues in the disappearance of a 20-year-old North Plains woman, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

It was day three in the search for Allyson Watterson, who was reported missing Monday after she and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Benjamin Garland, became separated on a hike in the hills north of North Plains overs the weekend.

Incident Cmdr. Deputy Tony Morris said the new information was gained through searchers.

“I’m not free to say what it is at this point. Just know that it’s something that’s going to change the type of searching we’re doing,” he said during an afternoon news conference at North Plains Elementary School, the command center for the search. “(We) have found some interesting items and clues that we’re going to try to find out more information tomorrow with a different type of search.”

However, he said the search will "slow down quite a bit ... as we get actionable information, we change the type of search and we slow down."

Deputies said search and rescuers will focus on an area they've already searched, and they'll rely solely on professional search and rescue teams.
After speaking to Garland, sheriff's deputies arrested him on several charges not associated with Watterson's disappearance.

Garland made a court appearance Thursday afternoon. Authorities said he has cooperated with them in the search for Watterson.

Garland faces an outstanding warrant charge as well as identify theft and auto theft charges. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He was ordered to be held on more than $2,000 bail. His next court hearing is set for Jan. 3, 2020.

As the Washington County Sheriff’s Office announced a dramatic shift in the report of events leading up to Allyson Watterson’s disappearance, deputies acknowledged their emerging concerns about the timeline since the 20-year-old woman disappeared.

At a news conference Friday afternoon, Washington County Detective Mark Povolny said there had been a 30-hour delay between the time Watterson was last seen and the time she was reported missing.

“That’s concerning to us," Povolny said. “We’re trying to put together what happened during that time.”

He added that while search and rescue crews are continuing to search in the same area, off Old Pumpkin Ridge Road in North Plains, the time delay meant that Watterson could no longer be in the area.

Povolny also said police have received reports that either Watterson or her boyfriend, Benjamin Garland, might have knocked on a door in that area around midnight on Sunday. Deputies are asking anyone in that area who heard a knock at their door to alert them, even if they didn’t answer the door.

He also said they’re looking for some information regarding Watterson’s cellphone. Povolny said that about a month ago, someone gave a cellphone to Watterson’s mother, Misty Watterson, who then gave the phone to her daughter. Povolny said police want to know who owned the phone before Allyson and Misty Watterson, because they believe that might give them information about the cellphone provider and access data that could help them track the location of the phone.

Meanwhile, Povolny said officials are trying to put together a timeline of what happened between Watterson’s disappearance and when she was reported missing.

Povolny said a homeowner in the North Plains area reported seeing Watterson and Garland shortly before noon on Sunday. Watterson has not been seen since. Another homeowner in the area found Garland asleep in his truck Monday morning, and around 5:30 p.m. that day, Garland’s father, Don Garland, reported Watterson missing.

According to Deputy Brian van Kleef, Don Garland said he and his son had spent that day searching for Watterson and were unsuccessful.

The sheriff’s office earlier in the day had said they have no evidence that Watterson and her boyfriend were hiking in the North Plains area where she was last seen, a complete change from their initial reports about the woman’s disappearance.

For days, the sheriff’s office maintained that Watterson, 20, and Benjamin Hunter Garland were traversing the rugged and privately owned woods off Old Pumpkin Ridge Road on Sunday when they became separated — an account officials are now saying came from Don Garland.

The two men were initially reluctant to make an official report because Benjamin Garland had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest, van Kleef said.

When he finally contacted authorities, Don Garland said his son and Watterson had been on a hike together before losing each other, according to the sheriff’s office.

“We’ve never been able to verify this narrative,” van Kleef said of the incident he’d described in a news release sent to reporters Tuesday.

Don Garland could not be reached for comment.

Povolny said they were still trying to find out more about where the two were and what they were doing prior to Watterson’s disappearance.

“This isn’t open area. I wouldn’t expect them to just be out here hiking,” Deputy Tony Morris said during a news conference as searchers spent a fourth day looking for the missing woman. “If I knew exactly what they were doing it would probably help me in my job.”

Misty Watterson, Allyson’s mother, told reporters Friday that her daughter and Benjamin Garland had been in North Plains to visit a friend when their car broke down.

The two got separated as they left to go get help, Misty Watterson said.

“That’s why they were out here,” she said. “They weren’t out here doing bad stuff.”

Van Kleef said the sheriff’s office has no evidence of this, either.

“We don’t know what they were doing out there,” said van Kleef. “We certainly don’t have a broken-down car.”

Items belonging to Allyson Watterson, who has been missing since Dec. 22, were found near North Plains, officials confirmed Sunday, though Washington County declined to say what was found or exactly where it was found.

According to KOIN News, a person reported “seeing something near Pumpkin Ridge Road” to authorities.

Watterson was last seen in a heavily wooded area near North Plains near Old Pumpkin Ridge Road.

“I can confirm that some of her personal effects were located yesterday,” said Detective Robert Rookhuyzen of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. “A broader search of the area was conducted and nothing else relevant was found.”

Rookhuyzen said the investigation is active and declined to say more.

Allyson Watterson’s boyfriend, the last person to see her before she went missing, was sentenced to three years in state prison on charges unrelated to her disappearance.

Benjamin Garland pleaded guilty to several charges on Wednesday and was sentenced to 36 months in prison, the Washington County District Attorney’s Office said.

Authorities say Garland was with 20-year-old Allyson Joy Watterson on December 22 when she went missing near North Plains, Oregon.

According to investigators, Garland was driving a stolen red Ford F-150 pickup around the time of Allyson's disappearance.

About six months after Allyson Watterson was reported missing, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said it believes the 20-year-old’s body had been found Saturday afternoon near North Plains.

The sheriff’s office said a property owner in an unincorporated area in North Plains, where Watterson was originally reporting missing, discovered her remains while clearing brush. Based on the location of the remains and evidence found at the scene, detectives suspect the remains are Watterson’s.

I wish there were something that would show the area where she went missing vs. the area where she was found. Hmmm...

I assume it must be pretty close by based on:

Based on the location of the remains and evidence found at the scene, detectives suspect the remains are Watterson?s.
Also, Garland sounds like a pretty shitty guy who has probably been enabled by his equally shitty father his entire life.

BENJAMIN HUNTER GARLAND SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS IN PRISON ON MULTIPLE CHARGES

HILLSBORO, Ore.- On April 8, 2020, Benjamin Hunter Garland pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, fraudulent use of a credit card and second-degree theft. Additionally, his probation was revoked on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, attempted coercion, fourth-degree assault and obliteration or change of a firearm identification number. Mr. Garland was then sentenced to three years in prison by Judge Rebecca Guptill. Senior Deputy District Attorney Gina Skinner prosecuted the defendant.

This plea agreement marks the closure of three separate cases pending against the defendant.

Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle:

On December 23, 2019, Washington County Sheriff?s deputies were dispatched to a rural area of North Plains, Oregon on a report of a missing woman. During that search, they spotted a pickup truck parked on a nearby property. A witness then told deputies that Mr. Garland moved the truck out of sight as deputies arrived. Deputies confirmed the truck was reported stolen. Mr. Garland admitted that he stole the truck several days earlier.

Fraudulent use of a credit card:

On December 17, 2019, Mr. Garland used a cell phone which didn?t belong to him to access a popular ride sharing application. He then used the phone to pay for the ride. As this was happening, the true owner of the phone received a notification alerting him to the unexpected charge. The owner had recently moved out of state and accidentally left his phone behind.

The owner contacted the driver, who then confronted Mr. Garland. Mr. Garland fled the car on foot but was arrested a short time later by deputies with the Washington County Sheriff?s Office.

    Second-degree theft:

On October 29, 2019, Mr. Garland entered a store in Hillsboro, Oregon and spent at least three hours filling a grocery cart with various items. He then left the store without paying for a single item. A loss prevention officer confronted Mr. Garland who fled the area on foot while wearing a stolen jacket. The stolen merchandise had an estimated value of $700. This was all captured on video surveillance.

Officers with the Hillsboro Police Department eventually tracked down Mr. Garland and made the arrest.

The Washington County District Attorney?s Office would like to acknowledge the work of the Washington County Sheriff?s Office and the Hillsboro Police Department on these cases.

In addition to his prison sentence, Mr. Garland was also ordered to serve two years of post-prison supervision after he is released. He will be transferred to the Oregon Department of Corrections to begin serving his sentence.

Here's a picture of the entitled little twat.

*Not entirely convinced this is the same person but a news site posted the profile pic from this FB account alongside Allyson's photo. If so, he seems like a pretty "normal" kid from a pretty "normal" family.

I usually only look to see if that person commented, I just accidently hovered over the likes and her name popped out at me.

Would be so much easier if people didn't have their friends list private, I hate that!

Mine is private, but that's just because of my stepson's mom. She is a psycho stalker.

Been there, done that - back when you actually had to leave the house to stalk someone. So glad I didn't have to deal with the added burden of social media, I really do sympathize.

Misty Watterson, Allyson's mother, told reporters Friday that her daughter and Benjamin Garland had been in North Plains to visit a friend when their car broke down.

The two got separated as they left to go get help, Misty Watterson said.

"That's why they were out here," she said. "They weren't out here doing bad stuff."

Van Kleef said the sheriff's office has no evidence of this, either.

"We don't know what they were doing out there," said van Kleef. "We certainly don't have a broken-down car."

So mom got a cell phone from someone and gave it to the daughter, but the police needed to find the previous owner to ask who the carrier was... does this mean the cell plan was still in the previous owner's name?

This, along with the statement above from the mom gives me weird vibes.

Keeping your friends list private is wise and recommended. Not just because of stalkers but also when someone clones your fb and then bugs all your friends, sending a friend request.

How long before they arrest the bf?

Well to be fair she has never physically stalked us. The last few years she has been living in another state, and she hasn't been in my stepson's life for over 8 years now. BUT, she is the kind of person who would steal my pictures of him on FB and post as her own, to possibly make it look like she has been in his life so people won't think she is a shitty mother. Wouldn't put it past her.

This is bitch is crazy, I have soooo many stories from before she decided she didn't want to be a mom to him. Basically, she tried to get custody so she could get money for him, when the judge said no my husband has had custody and it will stay that way, she didn't see the point in being his mom so she stopped coming around.
