An elderly Dane County man who was reported missing on Thanksgiving has been found dead.

Donald E. Soper, 87, of the Town of Westport, was found dead Saturday morning after a Silver Alert was issued for both him and his wife, Colleen, 87.

"Donald has been found deceased and Colleen is safe and receiving medical attention," according to a Silver Alert cancellation notice issued by the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Their Dodge Caliber was found around 10:20 am on a remote trail in the Town of Vermont, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Office. The vehicle appeared to be stuck.

Donald was dead at the scene and Colleen was transported to Madison's Meriter Hospital in critical condition, the sheriff's office statement said.

The office is investigating, but the circumstances do not appear to be suspicious, the statement said.

The Sopers left a family gathering in the Town of Black Earth about 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Donald planned to take Colleen for a short drive before returning her to an assisted living facility in Cross Plains and then returning to his home in the Town of Westport, according to the Silver Alert.

Colleen has dementia and Donald was an insulin-dependent diabetic who could become disoriented when his blood sugar was not properly managed, the alert said.

Family members became concerned when the couple did not arrive at their destination.

Law enforcement agencies searched the western part of Dane County on Thursday night and Friday.
