Ruth George (19) was allegedly strangled to death by Donald D. Thurman (26), because she wasn't paying attention to him

A man accused of killing a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago strangled her because he was angry she'd not paid attention to him, prosecutors say.

Ruth George, 19, was found dead over the weekend in her family's car in a parking garage on campus.

Her family reported her missing to campus police Saturday and her phone was tracked to the parking garage near the school's library, UIC Police Chief Kevin Booker said. When police arrived, they found her unresponsive in the back seat.

Donald D. Thurman, 26, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault, Booker said.

Thurman has no ties to the university, and it's unclear whether he has an attorney.

"The defendant was angry that he was being ignored," Cook County assistant state's attorney James Murphy said, according to CNN affiliate WLS. "The defendant came up behind the victim, grabbed her around the neck from behind, and put her into a choke hold."

"With his arms still wrapped around the victim's neck, the defendant dragged the victim from the ground and he opened her back seat car door," Murphy said.
Thurman was released from prison in December after serving time for armed robbery, campus police said. He was sentenced to six years, but only served two and was on parole.

George's friends called her "Ruthie." She was an honors student, and wanted to become a physical therapist to heal people, UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis said.
When George's family reported her missing, the sophomore had not been heard from since the night before, Booker said.

During the investigation, campus police retrieved video footage from university cameras and saw a man walking behind her at 1:34 a.m. on Saturday.

A minute later, she entered the garage on foot, followed by the man, police said. About half an hour later, the man left. Police reviewed video footage from the Chicago Transit Authority and the Chicago police cameras to determine his travel patterns, authorities said.

Detectives watching the train station saw a person matching the description of the attacker Sunday.

"The offender was taken into custody and subsequently gave a full confession to this horrific crime at approximately 3:20 p.m. on the same day, " campus police said.

A judge ordered the suspect held without bail.
So I am a little confused about whether she knew him and was ignoring him, or just walked by and didn't pay any attention to him. Either way, this is horrific.

So this gives more details. She didn't know him at all. So her "crime" was she walked by and just kept walking. So he had to sexually assault her and murder her. OMG

The man charged in the murder of UIC student Ruth George at a campus parking garage was denied bail Tuesday.

Donald Thurman, 26, is charged with first-degree murder and sexual assault. Police said he has confessed to the crime and has a criminal history.

Judge Charles Beach II ordered Thurman held without bail, after Cook County prosecutors said he admitted to the attack. He has no connection to UIC and did not know George, police said.

The 19-year-old sophomore was found strangled in the backseat of her family's car at a UIC parking garage near Halsted and Taylor streets.

Police said surveillance video shows Thurman at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday following George into the garage and then leaving a half hour later.

A person of interest is in custody after authorities said a University of Illinois Chicago student was strangled at a campus parking garage.

Thurman allegedly confessed after being arrested Sunday morning at the nearby Harrison and Halsted Blue Line stop. Investigators said they had staked out that station after tracking his travel patterns with the help of nearby cameras.

"The defendant was angry that he was being ignored. The defendant came up behind the victim, grabbed her around the neck from behind, and put her into a choke hold," said Cook County Asst. State's Attorney James Murphy. "With his arms still wrapped around the victim's neck the defendant dragged the victim from the ground and he opened her back seat car door."

Prosecutors said Thurman sexually assaulted the already unconscious George. A palm print and DNA evidence left behind linked him to the crime, which has rocked campus and devastated her family.

Yellow ribbons were hung around campus in memory of George, who was nicknamed "Baby Color." Monday night, dozens of people gathered at the place where George was killed, remembering the honors student who dreamed of becoming a health professional.

Murder suspect grew frustrated when UIC student didn’t react to his catcalls, prosecutors allege

A parolee charged with killing a University of Illinois at Chicago honor student spotted her as she walked alone past a CTA Blue Line stop on campus early Saturday morning and grew angered when she ignored his repeated attempts to talk, Cook County prosecutors alleged Tuesday.
Thurman confessed to physically attacking and sexually assaulting George, though he denied having intercourse with her, according to the prosecutor.
Police also found a discarded condom in George’s car.
