Waterbury Police said Janet Avalo-Alvarez, 26, was last seen on November 12th by friends and coworkers around 10:30 p.m. She was working at the La Guacara Taina bar located at 675 East Main Street in Waterbury that evening.

Police also said detectives are attempting to locate and interview Alfredo Esmerli Peguero-Gomez, 32, of Waterbury, in connection to the investigation.

"We really need him here to give us some explanation. Because he was the last one who saw her," said Avalo's brother, Randy Avalo.

According to police, Peguero-Gomez and Avalo-Alvarez are in a relationship and live together. They are also co-owners of La Guacara Taina bar. Neighbors and family told Channel 3 the couple fought often, mostly about money and the bar.

Police told Channel 3 they have no records officers responded to their Ayers Street home.

"I don?t even want to share my biggest concern, because he?s running away and we don?t have an idea where they are," said Avalo. "I don?t even trust, he can do something bad to her. I just need him to come and tell us something."

People have tried to reach her by via cell phone and social media. Police say her vehicle was left in the rear parking lot of the bar. Avalo-Alvarez is described as 5'1" tall and about 150-160 pounds. She has no known medical issues.

Police say they have executed search warrants at La Guacara Taina, Avalo-Alvarez's vehicle, and her home.

Waterbury detectives are continuing to investigate this case. The Avalo family said they are considering hiring a private investigator.

Alverez?s brother, Randy Avalo, says the last person who saw her was Gomez, (who also goes by Smerling).

The couple live together, but after Gomez spoke with police Wednesday morning, he went missing, too.

Waterbury Police have not named Gomez as a suspect in Alvarez?s disappearance, but they are looking for both of them.

?I haven?t slept in days wondering, looking,? said Leysha Estrada, Alvarez?s friend.

?We really need him here because he was the last person to see Janet,? said Randy Avalo. ?We need him here to give us some kind of explanation.?

Alvarez?s car was found outside the nightclub Wednesday morning. Estrada says Alvarez and Gomez been dating for about a year, but recently they?ve been arguing and took a ?break? from one another.

?She was having problems,? said Estrada, who works at the nightclub. ?They were like in a situation where they felt like they needed a break. But, they?d take a five-day break and feel like they can?t live without each other and it was a back and forward kind of thing. So, at this point their relationship wasn?t good.?

Randy Avalo tells News8 police told him Gomez?s car was spotted at Newark Airport in New Jersey. Police have not confirmed that to News8. Avalo says friends and family are starting to believe Gomez took off.

?With him running, we are just thinking bad things,? Avalo said. ?Because nobody knows where he?s at right now.?

Estrada doesn?t believe Alvarez would?ve just taken off without saying goodbye to anyone because her father is sick and one of her brothers is getting married soon.

?She?s not the type to just up and go,? Estrada said.

A missing Waterbury nightclub owner’s boyfriend, whose car was found at a New Jersey airport, was described by police Monday as “a strong person of interest” in the case.
As friends and relatives searched wooded hills and a trash-filled stream bed for Janet Avalo-Alvarez, who has been missing since Nov. 12, Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said prospects were dimming to find her alive.

Avalo-Alvarez, 26, was reported missing by co-workers and friends. Officers started looking for her late Wednesday after learning that she had not been seen or heard from since the day before.

Co-workers and friends told police they last saw Avalo-Alvarez at La Guakara Taina, 675 E. Main St., the nightclub police said she co-owns with Alfredo Esmerli Peguero-gomez, 32, her live-in boyfriend.

The Port Authority of New Jersey found Peguero-gomez’s 2010 Toyota Corolla in a parking lot at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, Waterbury police said. Police are looking for Peguero-gomez to question him.

Officers spoke to him late last Wednesday at the Ayer Street apartment that he and Avalo-Alvarez share, but Peguero-gomez said he did not know where she was, police said. Shortly after that, police said he left Waterbury in the Corolla and was recorded travelling over the George Washington Bridge on Thursday at 2:39 a.m.

Avalo-Alvarez’s Nissan Altima was left in the club’s back parking lot, police said, and no one could reach her by phone or on social media. Those who know her said she is not the kind of person to cut communication with family and friends.

Peguero-gomez and Avalo-Alvarez had argued frequently over business and personal issues, police said, but the couple had no history of domestic violence. Spagnolo said Avalo-Alvarez’s family is “devastated” that she has not been found.
