Today is the shooting suspect's birthday

It was the shooting suspect's birthday today, according to Capt. Kent Wegener of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect turned 16 today, according to Wegener, and is in grave condition.

"Dear Parents, please go home today and hug your children and tell them you love them. When you do this, imagine that this is the last time you will ever see them alive again. Then demand @senatemajldr opens the Senate so that we can give your children a chance to live," parent Fred Guttenberg tweeted. Guttenberg's daughter, Jaime, was one of the 17 killed in Parkland on February 14, 2018.

The following tweet is from Lauren Hogg, co-founder of March For Our Lives and sibling to activist David Hogg:

This is too familiar. The helicopter footage of a school, the single file lines of students, the contradictory information, the stretchers with wounded children, the scared parents.
Santa Clarita we are with you.

One person was killed and at least four others were injured in a shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The shots rang out just after 7:30 a.m. when students at the school at 21900 Centurion Way were scheduled to be in their first period class. Paramedics swarmed the campus, treating the wounded while Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies, the agency’s SWAT team and federal officials combed nearby neighborhoods searching for a 16-year-old boy suspected in the shooting.

Four people from the school were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for treatment. One patient, a female, died there. Two male patients are in critical condition and one male is in good condition, according to Patrick Moody, a spokesman for the hospital. Their specific injuries and ages were not immediately provided.

An impromptu effort to pass a gun background check bill in the Senate unanimously was quickly nixed by a Republican senator who said it would infringe on Second Amendment rights, as news of a mass shooting at a California high school came rolling in Thursday morning.

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut requested that the universal background check bill, H.R. 8, be passed by unanimous consent -- a procedural move that allows a bill to skip several steps, including debate, to pass unanimously, without senators casting an individual vote.

"We can't go 24 hours without news of another mass shooting somewhere in America. My kids and millions' others hide in corners of their classroom or in their bathrooms preparing for a mass shooting at their school, and this body does nothing about it," Murphy, who represented the constituents of Newtown in the House of Representatives at the time of the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school mass shooting, said on the Senate floor just before noon on Thursday.

The motion was blocked by Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, who argued that the bill should not be "exempt from consideration by the appropriate committee of jurisdiction."

"Legislation that would affect the rights of American citizens under the Second Amendment should not be fast tracked by the Senate," Hyde-Smith said Thursday.
"If this so-called common sense bipartisan legislation was indeed crafted with strong bipartisan input, it shouldn't have any problems advancing by regular order," she added. "Many questions about this legislation need to be answered before it's forced upon law-abiding gun owners."

After Hyde-Smith's action, Murphy said, "I can't get a piece of legislation to the floor in any other way other than to offer this motion," Murphy said, citing the Republican control of the committee. "And the American public are not going to accept silence from this body week after week, month after month, in the face of this epidemic carnage that is happening across this country."

Passed in the US House of Representatives in February, H.R. 8 would require background checks on all firearm sales in the country. Currently, under federal law, only licensed gun dealers must perform background checks for anyone seeking to purchase a firearm, which leaves the sale of guns between individuals largely unregulated.

Father Of Saugus HS Shooter Had Guns Seized Following ‘Mental Health Evaluation’

    https://thecount.com/2019/11/15/mark...th-evaluation/

BALTIMORE, MD. (THECOUNT) — Although ATF agents successfully traced the histories of six firearms found at the home of the Saugus High School shooting, they are unable to identify the weapon used in the shooting.

Investigators accounted for a number of guns once registered to the teen’s father, Mark Berhow, most of which were seized by the Sheriff’s Department several years ago following a “mental health evaluation,” say law enforcement officials.

Officials said there were also weapons that were not registered to the father. “Some of the firearms were not registered at all.” Officials offered no further explanation.

Law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation said Thursday guns and gun parts were found in several different areas of the home. A box truck was brought to the home by LA County Sheriff’s deputies to transport the weapons and other evidence.

Dominic Blackwell, 14, was identified as one of the students killed according to family members. Gracie Anne Muehlberger, 15, was identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as one of the two students who were shot and killed by a classmate at Saugus High School in an incident that left several others injured.

Nathaniel “Nate” Berhow, 16 to the day, died of self-inflicted injuries, say multiple Friday reports.

The 16-year-old who killed two students and injured three others in a shooting at a California high school last week used a "ghost gun," Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told CNN affiliate KABC.

Villanueva said the firearm was a "kit gun," meaning it was assembled from separately acquired parts and had no serial number, making it untraceable to authorities.

"It becomes what's known as a ghost gun," he said.

These untraceable weapons can be assembled from kits bought online or at gun shows, Villanueva said, with the gun just partially assembled.

This allows buyers to sidestep the typical requirements that come with registering a firearm, including background checks, the Los Angeles Police Department and the ATF said in a news release last year.

"And then you can legally buy it, assemble the weapon yourself, and then you have a gun that is not registered and no one knows that you have it," Villanueva said. "And that is very dangerous."

The gunman, identified as Nathaniel Berhow, took a .45-caliber pistol out of his backpack at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita last Thursday and appeared to fire at random, authorities said, before shooting himself. He died the next day.

Authorities are investigating when the weapon was assembled, Villanueva said, and whether it was done by the gunman or his father, who died in 2017 of natural causes.

In the past, the father had six registered firearms, the sheriff told KABC. "Ultimately, at one point, all the weapons were lawfully removed from the home and he became a prohibited possessor," he said.
