Two men whose cars had been caught up behind the police tape ask Contra Costa Sheriffs deputies if they can retrieve their cars at the intersection of Knickerbocker Lane and Spring Road near the location where several people were shot at a Halloween party on Lucille Way in Orinda , Calif., on Friday, November 1, 2019. Early reports stated that 4 people had been killed with others injured and transported to nearby hospitals. Though several of the injuries were believed to have been caused when guests ran from the shooting.

Five Bay Area residents were killed and at least four others injured on Halloween night when gunfire erupted at an Orinda home that had been rented on Airbnb for an event billed on social media as a ?mansion party.?

Neighbors described a loud and unruly gathering in which more than 100 attendees packed into the home at 114 Lucille Way before a volley of shots rang out around 10:50 p.m. Thursday, sending people scrambling for cover.

Officials said deputies were on their way to the home to check on a noise complaint when the shooting started. They arrived to find people running for their lives and three victims suffering from gunshot wounds who were later pronounced dead at the scene.

A fourth victim was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, Orinda Police Chief David Cook said. Late Friday, a fifth victim succumbed to her wounds.

On Friday evening, authorities identified the five people killed as Tiyon Farley, 22, of Antioch; Omar Taylor, 24, of Pittsburg; Ramon Hill Jr., 23, of San Francisco and Oakland; Javin County, 29, of Sausalito and Richmond; and Oshiana Tompkins, 19, of Vallejo and Hercules.

The Orinda Police Department and Contra Costa County Sheriff?s Office were investigating the case and said they were trying to determine whether two guns found inside the house were used in the shooting. They said they were analyzing several bullet casings as well.

?The suspect is still outstanding,? the agencies said in a news release. No other details about the suspect were released.

The president of Laney College in Oakland, Tammeil Gilkerson, said there had been reports connecting the party to the school, but it ?was not a school-coordinated event and we have not been able to officially confirm a connection with our students.?

However, Gilkerson said the school has been in touch with investigators and was planning drop-in grief counseling for students on Monday.

?I am deeply saddened to learn about the shooting in Orinda last night,? Gilkerson said in a statement. ?My heart goes out to the victims, their families and loved ones.?

People from across the region flocked to the home for the party that had been advertised on social media, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff?s Office.

Paramedics rushed wounded victims to hospitals, and other victims drove themselves. Cook said Friday that more victims might come forward.

Authorities did not say what led to the shooting.

Cook called the investigation ?very complex.?

?This is a wide area with a lot of people, and we?re still trying to wrap our arms around exactly what transpired,? he said, adding that authorities don?t believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.

Orinda Mayor Inga Miller said city flags were lowered to half-staff to honor the victims, and Contra Costa County officials will be providing services to affected residents.

?Our hearts go out to the families who are learning about their loved ones at this time and for those in the hospital who were wounded,? Miller said. ?This is a tragedy of unbelievable gravity.?

In a statement, Gov. Gavin Newsom called for gun reform.

?This will barely make the news today. That?s how numb we have become to this,? Newsom said. ?Our hearts are aching for the victims and all those affected by this horrific tragedy.?

Shocked neighbors described the previous night?s trouble as local investigators and the FBI processed the scene throughout the day Friday.

?Our whole neighborhood heard it, and then people were screaming and fleeing,? Chris Gade said. ?We could see from our windows. There were a lot of people walking around who were hurt.?

An Instagram post circulated online advertised an ?Airbnb Mansion Party,? but officials did not immediately provide details.

The party?s host rented the house through Airbnb and claimed she was holding a family reunion for 12 people, said Michael Wang, who purchased the home around two years ago. Wang, 58, said the woman who rented the home said she was from Lafayette and planned to have a family reunion at the property after ?going through issues.?

He said he began getting calls from neighbors about the party Thursday night and called police after looking on his home security camera and seeing well over a dozen people at the home.

?We called the police. They were on the way to go there to stop them, but before we got there, the neighbor already sent us a message saying there was a shooting,? he told The Chronicle in a phone interview. ?When we arrived there, the police were already there.?

Airbnb officials said in a statement that the party was unauthorized by the host, who ?specifically banned parties? in his listing. The home has since been removed from the company?s website, and the person who booked the rental was banned from the marketplace, Airbnb spokesman Ben Breit said.

?Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims of this abhorrent act as well as the neighbors of the home,? he said in the statement.

Neighbors had complained multiple times about previous disruptive parties at the home, and the city had sent the owner two ?notices of violation? of regulations ? one for exceeding the maximum occupancy and another for parking.

Things were relatively quiet in recent months at the home until Thursday?s blowout turned into a massacre.

Four people were taken to Walnut Creek Medical Center, the county?s trauma center, said Ben Drew, a hospital spokesman earlier Friday. One person died shortly after arriving. One more person was listed in critical condition, one was in serious condition, and one was treated and released.

Romond Reynolds said his 24-year-old son was shot three or four times and was at the hospital in stable condition. He stopped by the scene Friday morning to pick up his car, which his son, Armani Reynolds, had borrowed to go to the party.

?I don?t like it, and I don?t understand it,? Romond Reynolds said of the shooting.

Family members of other victims sat somberly in the hospital?s waiting room Friday morning and declined to comment.

Investigators at the shooting scene taped off the area and searched for evidence along the winding street leading to the four-bedroom, 3,972-square-foot home south of the city?s downtown and just east of Highway 24.

The killings shocked neighbors and residents in Orinda, where homicides are especially rare. The last killing in the small East Bay city about 17 miles from San Francisco was in 2012, when a man hacked his girlfriend to death with a machete. Before that, the city?s only other homicide in this century was in 2002, when Susan Polk killed her estranged psychotherapist husband.

Gade, a UC Berkeley psychology lecturer, recalled the previous night?s violence from the scene in the predawn hours Friday.

He had just put his two kids to bed after an evening of trick-or-treating when he heard the party up the hill from his Longridge Road home. Some of his neighbors had already called to complain about the noise, he said.

He went to sleep around 10 p.m. and woke up after getting a burst of text messages from frantic neighbors, he said. Then the gunfire rang out.

Gade said he didn?t hear the shooting, but his neighbors described a ?volley of shots.?

Wang, the owner, said he was frustrated with Airbnb.

?We don?t want local people to have a party there,? he said. ?We can?t control it. Airbnb does not release the customer information before they really book, so we have no way to know. We also tell them there?s a maximum (number of) people and no parties, but people lie.?

Hayden Aitchison, a senior at Miramonte High School in Orinda, said her friends had attended the party and escaped uninjured. She almost went to the party after seeing it hyped on Instagram, but she instead went to a party in Hayward.

?I?m glad I didn?t go,? Aitchison said, looking up the street from her driver?s side window. ?They said it got really chaotic ? a lot of yelling, and then shots were fired.?

Some people were wearing costumes, and most of the attendees were college students, Aitchison said.

?I really never thought anything like this would happen around here,? said 17-year-old Dilan Sudra, who lives down the hill from the shooting and woke up hearing ?honking and sirens and lots of cars.?

A black Honda Civic full of young people, some still wearing Halloween costumes, pulled up to the area of the shooting Friday morning, where police tape blocked off the street.

A woman in stocking feet and wrapped in a blanket walked out of the car and said she was trying to retrieve her own car from the prior night.

Everyone in the car declined to be interviewed.

    ?We?re grieving,? one woman said.

Airbnb to ban ‘party houses’ after deadly Halloween shooting

    https://www.nydailynews.com/news/nat...7qi-story.html

Airbnb announced Saturday it would immediately ban "party houses” after five people were killed during a Halloween gathering this week at a California home rented through the service.

“This is unacceptable,” CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky said in a series of tweets describing steps the company would take in response to the killings.

Chesky said the San Francisco-based firm would ramp up efforts to combat “unauthorized parties” and get rid of “abusive” host and guest behavior, including conduct that led to the “terrible events” in the affluent city of Orinda on Thursday night.

The CEO said Airbnb would “initiate a 10 day sprint to review and accelerate the development and implementation of these new safety initiatives."

At least one shooter opened fire inside the rented home during an event that was advertised as an “Airbnb Mansion party,” according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. The gunfire sent more than 100 partygoers running for their lives and killed five people, three of whom died at the scene.

Their ages ranged from 19 to 29, according to police.

Officials said the woman who rented the house on Airbnb had falsely claimed she needed the space to host a family reunion for 12 people.

Chesky, who acknowledged on Twitter that the company “must do better,” said the platform would also create a dedicated “party house” rapid-response team and expand manual screening of high-risk reservations, which are flagged through an automated system.

No arrests have been made in the Halloween shooting.
