You are talking to a woman who has laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom and chuckled at catastrophe.

Woman convicted of strangling 10-year-old stepdaughter to death in Indiana

An Indiana woman has been convicted in the strangulation death of her 10-year-old stepdaughter.
It took just three hours of deliberation for a jury in Grant County, northern Indiana, to convict Amanda Carmack of murder, strangulation, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and domestic battery resulting in death to a person under 14 in the August 2019 killing.
Skylea Carmack went missing on Aug. 31, 2019, and her body was found in a shed in plastic trash bags days later outside their Gas City home, about 80 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Police immediately suspected and arrested Carmack, who had told her family the girl had run away. She had even filed a missing-persons report, police said at the time.
Carmack’s first turn before the courts ended in a mistrial in November 2020 after several people involved in the proceedings tested positive for coronavirus.
Her second trial began last Monday. The jury heard details such as prosecutors’ allegations that Carmack had tried to strangle Skylea with her bare hands, but resorted to a pair of jeans that the medical examiner performing the autopsy deemed the tightest knot he’d ever seen, WANE-TV reported.
The defense tried to argue that Carmack had snapped and so the murder wasn’t premeditated — she had had worsening depression and migraines in the weeks leading up to the killing — but that didn’t hold sway. The state said air fresheners, dryer sheets and candles were on hand to mask the smell, and items had been piled atop Skylea’s body, WANE reported.
The jury is scheduled to reconvene on Monday to decide whether Carmack should be sentenced to life in prison, WANE reported.
