An Estacada couple found dead Monday in the Mount Hood National Forest were killed in a double homicide, authorities say.

Stacy Jean Rickerd, 42, and Jeremy David Merchant, 43, died of homicidal violence. Their bodies were found in a gravel pit used for recreational shooting.

Sgt. Marcus Mendoza, a Clackamas County Sheriff?s Office spokesman, declined to say how the couple was killed or how they got to the gravel pit, citing an ongoing investigation.

Detectives are seeking tips ? and following up on existing ones ? in efforts to identify a suspect or suspects, Mendoza said. There?s no known danger to the public.

Mendoza said two people found the couple?s bodies in the gravel pit, which sits off the 4615 Road and 130 Spur, while they were in the area to do some recreational shooting Monday morning.

A dog named Talladega, who was owned by the couple, was found uninjured at the scene.

He?s since been placed with family members.

Authorities urge anyone who has information to call 503-723-4949 or leave a tip online. Tipsters should reference case No. 19-018794.
