Strange excuse

When evil mum Louise Porton was convicted of killing her two young daughters, the horrifying case shocked the world.

The sex-crazed escort, 23, suffocated defenceless Lexi Draper, three, and 16-month-old Scarlett Vaughan just 18 days apart.

Now a cousin of the convicted killer - who was jailed for at least 32 years - has revealed Porton would steal from her grandmother as a teenager, lash out viciously at her siblings and later bragged about how much she earned as a prostitute.

She alienated herself from the rest of her family by refusing to visit her grandmother on her deathbed - and then snubbed her funeral days later, leaving her loved ones furious with her selfishness.

The cousin said Porton should face the death penalty for her crimes.

Mum of woman who murdered kids says she 'became monster after something snapped'

The mum murdered her adorable children because they "got in the way" of her sex life, jurors at her murder trial were told.

The relative - who declined to be named because the family has already been targeted by trolls - told Mirror Online that Porton grew up in a close-knit family, but was always an outsider.

Every Sunday as a child, Porton would be taken to visit her grandmother, Joy.

The cousin said: "To be honest she was never a normal child. We were always close as a family, but she never wanted to get involved.

"We always used to meet at my nan's, but she'd just stand there and give you a horrible look.

"If anyone sat near her she'd say 'go away or I'll smash your face', and then she'd just walk out."

And there were early signs that Porton had a vicious streak.

Her cousin continued: "As kids if we were going to fight we'd just fight, but she'd dig in her nails when no-one was looking.

"She knew how to be sly from a young age. She was very manipulative."

Joy, who died in April 2016, always had misgivings about Porton, the cousin claimed - fuelled further when the youngster began stealing from her when she was around 11.

"She said there's just something about that child, she always had an ill feeling," the cousin said.

"My nan was always a good judge of character, when you introduced her to new partners she could always tell if someone wasn't right, and she'd turn out to be right."

Her grandmother began to notice things going missing whenever Porton visited her - but was met with a furious reaction when she asked about it.

"Every time she left my nan would say such-and-such has gone from the table," the cousin said.

"Nan asked her if she was taking things, but she just said: 'If you accused me of that I'll never come around again.'

"She was quite an angry child, and it got worse when she was a teenager. She was always after money. Louise never apologised for anything."

Porton was often violent toward her cousin when she was young, the relative claimed.

"She was violent, she would try and hurt us without people seeing," she said.

"When we went to our nan's she'd never interact with anyone, she just used to stare."

When the killer was 11, her cousin claimed, her mum Sharon walked out on her to be with another man, leaving her dad to raise the three children alone.

She said Louise cut her mum off for years, and was deeply affected by what happened.
As she got older, her cousin said family members became worried about her relationships with men, as she started showing signs of the sex addiction thought to have motivated the killings years later.

"Once she started sleeping with people, she was sleeping with anyone and everyone, anyone showing her attention, especially if they had money," the relative said.

"I told her she needs to think about what she's doing, but she said: 'I know what I'm doing, I know how to look after myself.'"

The difficult relationship with her family came to a head when Joy became ill and doctors said she was not going to recover.

Despite knowing her grandmother had just hours to live, Porton refused to visit her, and later snubbed the funeral as well.

Her cousin said: "When nan was in hospital she was the only one who wouldn't come.

"I contacted Louise and told her they've given nan less than 24 hours but she said 'I can't make it'.

"I told her it was her last chance, she said 'I heard what you said, but I'm not coming'. I just put the phone down, I was so emotional."

And Porton, who had recently given birth to Lexi, said she could not attend the funeral a week later, claiming she was breastfeeding.

"I rang her the night before the funeral, she said she wasn't coming because she was breastfeeding Lexi," the relative said.

"I said I would organise a private area for her, but she said no. The whole family was disgusted, they cut her off after that because she was so selfish.

"She was always there when my nan was giving out pocket money, but she wasn't there when she needed her."

As a result of the feud, the cousin never met Porton's younger daughter, Scarlett.

Things got worse, she said, when she spotted Porton bragging on Facebook about how much money she could make by selling sex.

Appalled, the cousin messaged her, but never received a reply.

She said: "I messaged her on Facebook and about it, I told her she was disgusting.

"She never replied to that message, I told her she's a disgrace and nan would be turning in her grave."

In spite of the feud, Porton's cousin said she sent her a message when she heard Lexi had died in January last year.

Lexi died on January 15 last year, little more than two weeks before Scarlett was killed on February 1.

"Lexi was so sweet, she was a lovely cute thing," Porton's cousin said.

"When I heard she'd died I messaged Louise and said I was so sorry for her loss, but she never replied."

But she knew something wasn't right when she learned of Scarlett's death.

"I said to my mum that something isn't right, how can you lose two babies in two weeks?" she revealed.

On Friday a judge at Birmingham Crown Court handed Porton a life sentence, with a minimum term of 36 years - meaning she will be in her 50s when she becomes eligible for parole.

"It's a shame we don't have the death penalty in this country," her cousin said.

"If you're going to take an innocent person's life, you should be prepared to give your life as well, and she's taken two.

"She'll have a TV, she'll be given food, and she shouldn't have that. What do those poor girls get?

"If she comes out she's only going to be in her 50s. It should be a life for a life."

Birmingham Crown Court heard Porton had an X-rated lifestyle, which involved offering men sex in exchange for money, and she saw her kids as a "burden".

Sentencing Porton, Judge Justice Amanda Yip said: "There is only one sentence that is a mandatory life sentence.

"As with Lexi you tried to pass her death off as an unexpected natural death. You pretended you were driving to hospital.

"The truth is both children died because you deliberately obstructed their airways.

"Text menages and internet searches done on your mobile phone reveal a degree of pre-meditation. I am sure you were responsible for the events that Led to Lexi?s admission to hospital

"Your internet searching was sinister. You delayed calling for an ambulance until you were sure she was dead.

"The murder of any child by a mother involves the process of abuse of trust. They ought to have relied on their mother to look after them.

"It is not a case of a young mother doing something in the heat of the moment. The evidence shows calculated decisions. In between the deaths you carried on as normal."
