Step-grandpa stuck his head out the window for sevral seconds. People on other forums are accusing him of covering up something sinister as he was the babysitter at the moment. Whatever it is, the truth will come out.

No evidence for this whatsoever, just something I have thought about...I wonder if something was wrong with the kid and he thought this would be better than her being sick or having a deficiency all her life. Just wondering.

In one article I read, court docs describe him as holding her "out" the window, and it looks like that's what he's doing ... not just standing her on the railing like he claims.

All I know is if someone held my baby out a window like that, I would kill them with my bare hands. Even if my child was unharmed. I would tear their face off like an angry honey badger.

The way he’s holding her with his arms stretched out like that makes it look like he did it on purpose.

The parents of an Indiana girl who fell to her death from the open window of a cruise ship docked in Puerto Rico contend it was “physically impossible” for the child’s grandfather to lean out of that 11th floor window, as the cruise line has alleged, just before the toddler slipped from his hands.

The parents of Chloe Wiegand also accuse Royal Caribbean Cruises of releasing deceptive surveillance images, and allege in their preliminary response filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Miami that the cruise line lied in its recent motion seeking the dismissal of the family’s lawsuit.

That suit accuses the cruise line of negligence in Chloe's death by allowing the window in the ship’s children's play area to be open.

In its Jan. 8 filing, Royal Caribbean alleged that surveillance video shows the child’s 51-year-old grandfather, Salvatore Anello, leaning out of the open window for about eight seconds just moments before he lifted his granddaughter up to the window, from which she fell to her death on July 8.

The cruise line said Anello's alleged actions were "reckless and irresponsible.” He was charged last year in Puerto Rico with negligent homicide in the 18-month-old girl's death.

But the Wiegand family says Royal Caribbean lied in its filing and that their attorney’s examination of the area shows it was impossible for Anello, of Valparaiso, Indiana, to have leaned over a wooden railing and through the angled window on the Freedom of the Seas cruise ship.

“Royal Caribbean has demonstrably lied to this court and, in so doing, Royal Caribbean has created a false narrative to accompany Royal Caribbean’s carefully selected CCTV video upon which Royal Caribbean bases its motion to dismiss,” the family’s filing states.

The distance between the window frame and the railing was about 18 inches so to even touch the window with the top of his head, the attorney “had to lift his feet at least seven inches off the ground,” the family says.

The attorney “could not lean ‘out of the window frame’ due to the distance between the railing and the window frame. In fact, it would have been physically impossible for Mr. Anello to have had his head out of the window frame with his feet on the deck,” it states.

A man who was holding his granddaughter when she fell to her death from an open window in a cruise ship in Puerto Rico has agreed to accept a plea deal offered by prosecutors.

Authorities charged Salvatore “Sam” Anello in October with negligent homicide in 18-month-old Chloe Wiegand’s death in July, saying he “negligently exposed the child to the abyss through a window.”

“The Puerto Rico Department of Justice has diligently prosecuted the charges against Salvatore Anello in order to bring justice to Chloe’s unfortunate death,” Puerto Rico Attorney General Dennise Longo Qui?ones said in a statement. She said that Anello filed a motion Monday afternoon stating his intention to plead guilty and asking for a hearing date when the court might accept the plea.

“Anello’s decision to so proceed is wholly within his discretion and will become binding only upon his appearing before the court to voluntarily plead guilty,” the statement said.

In his own statement, Anello said he took the deal “to try to help end part of this nightmare for my family, if possible.”

Anello will not serve any jail time as part of the deal, according to attorney Michael Winkleman, who represents the toddler’s family in a civil suit against Royal Caribbean International. Earlier Monday, Anello had asked for a trial in front of a judge rather than a jury, the Associated Press reported.

“The decision was an incredibly difficult one for Sam and the family,” Winkleman said in a statement. “But because the plea agreement includes no jail time and no admission of facts, it was decided the plea deal is in the best interests of the family so that they can close this horrible chapter.”

He added that the family wants to “turn their focus to mourning Chloe and fighting for cruise passenger safety by raising awareness about the need for all common carriers to adhere to window fall prevention laws designed to protect children from falling from windows.”

This case is beyond heartbreaking, I can't even imagine. I saw an interview with the grandfather when he said he was going to PR to face the charges. He said he didn't care what happened to him because the worse thing in his life had already happened. I cried like a baby.

I'm kinda cold on this one. He didn't just hold the kid up to see better. He dangled her out the window and then the whole family tried to pin it on the cruise ship and claim ignorance.

Just because you kill someone because of your poor judgment doesn't mean that you get off with a slap on the wrist for it. I feel the same way about drunk drivers and parents who don't lock up their guns.

    Sorry, not sorry.

Seriously?! I've never heard this, but the whole situation really disturbed me and I have to admit I didn't follow it closely. This happened the day after our ship left Puerto Rico so I was at sea for two weeks when it happened. All I really saw was the interview with the grandfather months later.
