Multiple people are hurt after a shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper building in Annapolis, Maryland, local police and federal officials say.

Anne Arundel County police confirmed there was a shooter in the building, at 888 Bestgate Road. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said on Twitter that the "shooting incident" was at the Capital Gazette.

There are confirmed injuries, Capt. Russell Davies with the Anne Arundel EMS confirmed to NBC News. He said at this point there were no confirmed deaths. The call for an active shooter came in at 2:34 p.m, Davies said.

Gazette staff told The Baltimore Sun — which owns the Gazette — that multiple people were shot, a story on the Sun's website says.

Officers are searching the building. They could not immediately confirm whether anyone had been arrested.

Chopper4 footage shows people walking out with their hands up.

Gov. Larry Hogan said he was "devastated" to learn of the shooting. He asked residents to stay away from the area. Defense Highway (MD-450) and Generals Highway (MD-178) are closed.

I'll go ahead and put this in here for now. (I think it made it's debut on MDS a few mass shootings ago)

I wonder if it was a disgruntled coworker or a domestic dispute.

I'm not a Milo fan, but he didn't have anything to do with this.

    Here is an Update

Five people have died and several others are "gravely injured" after a shooting Thursday at the Capital Gazette newspaper building in Annapolis, Maryland, local and federal officials say.

The names of the dead were not released immediately.

The suspected shooter is 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos, three senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter told NBC News. Anne Arundel County police declined to provide the suspect's name.

The suspect threatened the community newspaper on social media, police department spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said in a briefing Thursay night.

"This individual had some type of vendetta against the Capital newspaper, and they were specifically targeted," Frashure said.

The suspect is in custody, and authorities are interrogating him, officials said.

The man obscured his fingerprints, making it difficult to identify him, two senior law enforcement officials told NBC News. But officials were able to identify him using facial recognition software, multiple officials said. County police declined to comment on any use of those methods.

Officials searched the suspect's home Thursday night in Laurel, Maryland, Chopper4 footage showed.

Jarrod Ramos is named as the Mass Killer in the shooting

The gunman who killed five people in the Capital Gazette newspaper building has been identified as Jarrod Ramos, according to CBS News. Police have not confirmed his identity.

Ramos, who lives in Laurel, Maryland, has a criminal conviction in his past, including criminal harassment.

According to an article written by the Capital Gazette in 2011, Ramos started talking on Facebook with a woman he went to high school with. At some point, she said he began harassing her. He was charged and pleaded guilty to harassment.

The Capital Gazette then wrote a story about the woman, Ramos and the dangers of what you post online. The article was called "Jarrod wants to be your friend."

Almost a year later, Ramos filed a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper, the writer and the publisher.

He also has various other criminal and civil cases in Anne Arundel County, Annapolis, Prince George’s County and Howard County.

Pinned to the top of a Twitter page that appears to belong to Ramos is photo of a resignation letter dated October 20, 1997. It’s from a former newspaper employee to the managing editor of the paper. The caption along with the tweet reads “So fortuitous having an open mic to go outside the record in the Court of Appeals. And they think *you're* stupid!?”

There were no tweets from this account in the past two and a half years, but something was posted Thursday at 2:37 p.m., shortly before police said the shooting happened.

The shooting occurred at an office building located on 888 Bestgate Road around 2:30 p.m. No gunfire was exchanged when police took the suspected gunman into custody.

Police also released the following details about Ramos, without naming him:

Police were able to identify him through facial recognition, according to the AP, but his name has not been released
He damaged his fingerprints so police couldn't identify him
He's described as a white male in his late 30s
He did not have any identification on him
The gun he used was a shotgun
Smoke bombs and flash bang devices were found in his backpack
He has a conflict with the newspaper itself, Lt. Ryan Frasure with Anne Arundel County police said on CNN.

A friend of mine who works for a "govt police force" knew exactly who the guy was when she saw his picture. Apparently, he'd been on multiple watch lists for some time. His ex girl friend even told the police that "He'd be the country's next mass shooter."

    Victims:

    Robert “Big Rob” Hiaasen

The 59-year-old is described by the Baltimore Sun as a wryly observant writer and mentor of the younger staff members at Capital Gazette.

Robert was married to Maria Hiaasen for 33 years. The two married five months after their first date. Together they had three kids: Ben, 29,; Samantha, 27, and Hannah, 26.

He was known as “Big Rob” by his children and many others as he stood 6 feet 5 inches tall. Maria described him as humorous and “just the best husband.”

Robert was a native to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He joined the Capital Gazette as an assistant editor in 2010 and wrote a column that appeared in the Sunday paper.

    Gerald Fischman

Gerald Fischman, 61, is described as having a “wicked pen” and worked as a voice of the Annapolis news for 25 years, according to the Capitol Gazette.

“He had ability that, I thought, deserved a higher calling than The Capital,” longtime editor and publisher Tom Marquardt said.

Fischman started working at the paper in 1992 and was known for his post-it notes on just about every piece he submitted.

He married an opera star from Mongolia online.

Fischman graduated from the University of Maryland in 1979 and was routinely awarded regional writing awards.

    John McNamara

John McNamara, 56, worked at the Capitol Gazette for more than 20 years covering sporting events.

He went by “Mac” and was known for his concise writing and extensive knowledge of regional sports.

A fellow reporter said his “razor wit” would come out in bursts that impressed them all.

Mac graduated from the University of Maryland and wrote two books about his alma mater’s athletics. He was said to be working on a book about great basketball players before he died.

He is survived by his wife Andrea Chamblee.

Our biggest argument was about who was lucky enough to have the other,” she said.

“He was devoted to his friends and family. He was devoted to his craft and he was devoted to me.”

    Wendi Winters

Wendi Winters, 65, moved to Maryland 20 years ago after a career in fashion and public relations in New York City. She was hired at the Capital Gazette and covered all sorts of local news.

Wendi has four children and her daughter, Winters Geimer, said her mother was a “fantastic reporter.”

“Her life was a gift to everyone who knew her and the world will not be the same without her,” said Winter. “We are grieving and trying to make sure all of us can be together to celebrate the life of our mother.”

Wendi studied fashion design at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Friends said she was known for her detailed Christmas letters.

“You would be completely updated about every aspect of her life,” Kathryn Flynn, a longtime editor at the Capital Gazette said and laughed.

Her last tweet posted Sunday was about a community mural project.

“Spreading beauty one artwork at a time today ...” she wrote.

“That would be Wendi,” Flynn said.

    Rebecca Smith

Rebecca Smith, 34, was a recent hire at the Capital Gazette but was already thought of as a “valuable asset.”

She was a sales assistant and her boss said she made sure the sales department ran smoothly.

“She was a very thoughtful person,” Capital Gazette advertising director Marty Padden said. “She was kind and considerate, and willing to help when needed. She seemed to really enjoy to be working in the media business.”

Rebecca described herself on her Facebook as a survivor of endometriosis — and a “Dog Mom. Softball Fiance. Bonus Mom to the best kid ever.”

She lived in Baltimore County with her fianc?.

“She was a very kind person,” Padden said. “She was very likable, and she had a good sense of humor.”
