Shots were fired as Escondido police responded to reports of a suspicious man at a motel on North Broadway at around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

About three and a half hours later, police confirmed the suspect was dead and the standoff was over.

Officers rushed to the Hacienda Motel located on N. Broadway near Mission Avenue, across from the Kaiser Permanente Hospital.

Police said the motel manager called 911 because the suspect didn't check out of his room.

When officers banged on the door of the second-story room the suspect told them he was armed with a gun, so officers backed off. When they fell back, they heard two gunshots, police said.

SWAT officers deployed a flashbang and could be heard talking over their loudspeaker to the suspect. A drone was seen flying in front of the room window, and a robot was outside of the room.

At around 5:30 p.m. officers used a battery ram to breach the door and enter the hotel room. Officers exited the room without anyone in custody and late confirmed that the suspect was dead.
