LIVERMORE, Calif. (KGO) -- Relatives believe a body recovered from the bottom of Lake Del Valle near Livermore late Wednesday morning, is that of a missing jockey from San Francisco who appears to have drowned on Tuesday.

For family members waiting for identification, it was a hot day of bitter anguish.

"Unbelievable. And it still feels surreal right now" says Yolanda Walker, aunt of 23-year-old Shawn Spikes.

Spikes was a regular rider at Golden Gate Fields and on the County Fair Circuit. Walker says he has accomplished much at a young age.

"Wanted to become a jockey at an early age and accomplished that," she said.

East Bay Regional Parks Police say Spikes was one of several friends who rented a boat Tuesday afternoon for a cruise on the Lake. Investigators say he somehow went overboard in the early evening.

A search well into the night failed to turn up any sign of him. But his body was found today in 65 feet of water-- well away from the boat dock.

Spikes body was found near the area where another man, 31-year-old Los Gatos resident Florencio Rodriguez Pureco, drowned last week.

Pureco also rented a boat with a group of friends or family and somehow fell overboard. Pureco's body was found on Sunday.

"It's a swim at your own risk area, specifically one mile up," said Pete DeQuincy, Lake Del Valle Aquatics Director for East Bay Regional Parks.

Relatives say there are gaps in the story-- for one, Shawn couldn't swim. And reportedly, no one actually saw him go into the water. Authorities say he was not wearing a life jacket.

"If you're going to go out on the water in a boat we want you to wear a life vest," DeQuincy says.

LIVERMORE — The body of a man was recovered Wednesday morning from Lake Del Valle, ending a search that had started Tuesday night, authorities said.

It was the second drowning reported at the lake since Saturday, when a 31-year-old man went missing.

The man who died Tuesday was with some other people on a small boat they had rented shortly before he was seen going under the water in the Swallow Bay area of the lake just before 6:30 p.m. Authorities said that portion of the lake is a non-lifeguarded area.

Authorities said it was not clear if the man fell or jumped into the water. It was also not immediately clear if he knew how to swim or wore a life jacket.

East Bay Regional Park District police and firefighters responded to the scene and were joined by the Alameda County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department divers to conduct a search, authorities said.

Searchers used a helicopter and boats to look for the man before calling off the search just after midnight.

The search resumed later Wednesday morning, and the man’s body was found before noon in more than 40 feet of water, authorities said. Authorities said relatives of the man were at the lake when he was found.

It was the second drowning at the lake since Saturday, when a 31-year-old Los Gatos resident fell overboard from a boat he had rented with some other people, authorities said. That man’s body was recovered Sunday, and the Alameda County sheriff’s office coroner’s division identified him Wednesday as Florencio Rodriguez-Pureco. It was not known if he was wearing a life jacket.

Dave Mason, an EBRPD spokesman, said people engaging in recreational activities in water areas like boating or swimming, should always wear life jackets and swim in lifeguard protected areas.
