LELAND, Miss. (WZTV) ? A Mississippi mother has been arrested for the death of her two little boys who drowned after being left in a car while she went shopping according to police.

The incident took place on March 9 according to the Leland Police Department. On that day, the department reports officers responded to a call a Nissan Pathfinder was floating in a nearby creek with three children trapped inside.

Inside were 4-year-old Steve Smith, 1-year-old Rasheed Johnson Jr. and 2-year-old Raelynn Johnson. Officers jumped into the water and broke into the vehicle but as the vehicle floated down the creek, officers were only able to pull the girl out to safety.

The vehicle submerged into the water and attempts to find the vehicle took around two more hours. The two boys were found inside and pronounced dead on the scene. According to police, mother Jenea Monique Payne told police she left the kids in the vehicle and went into a Stop-N-Shop. When she exited, she found Pathfinder was gone and had rolled into the creek, locked in the SUV.

Payne was charged on Monday with two counts of manslaughter-culpable negligence and one count of child neglect.
