LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man wanted in a Carson murder investigation and linked to a missing 15-year-old girl and her mother -- another suspect in the murder -- was arrested in Mexico Thursday.

Roman Cerratos was accompanied by an FBI agent to the United States. He was turned over to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department after he arrived to Los Angeles International Airport Friday from Guadalajara.

Video from onboard his Alaska Airlines flight shows Cerratos in handcuffs while law enforcement officers walked in front and behind him.

The search for the two suspects in the murder investigation triggered an Amber Alert in April for Alora Benitez, who is now 16. She was last seen with her mother, Maricela Mercado, and Cerratos, who are each wanted in the Carson murder of Jeffery Appel.

Cerratos and Mercado were last seen driving a white 2013 BMW four-door sedan with Nevada license plate MARIMAR. That vehicle was later recovered unoccupied in San Diego in late April, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities are still searching for the 15-year-old girl and Mercado, investigators tell Eyewitness News.

"We had information that they worked together at some point in Colima, Mexico. We believe they also had traveled from Vallarta, Mexico. At this point, their whereabouts are unknown. We're hoping that this media attention... that she'll take note of it and maybe surrender, turn herself in to a consulate or embassy in Mexico," said FBI agent Scott Garriola.

The FBI is not saying how Cerratos was captured.

Note the murder victim is Jeffrey Appel, (32) and its being tied to the kidnapping of Alora Benitez. Note Alora is listed missing as of this time.

A man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Carson has been arrested in Mexico, while the man’s ex-wife, who is also suspected in the killing, and her 15-year-old daughter remained missing, authorities.

Roman Cerratos, 39, is accused of the April 16 shooting death of Jeffrey Appel, 32, of Las Vegas, in the 400 block of East Carson Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

He was apprehended in “an undisclosed location in Mexico” on Thursday and returned to Los Angeles County to face charges on Friday night via LAX, Deputy Edmo Luna of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said in a written statement.

He has been sought as a fugitive since the shooting, along with his ex-wife, 40-year-old Maricela Mercado. Mercado’s daughter, 15-year-old Alora Benitez of Redondo Beach, was last seen with the suspects the day after the killing. Authorities issued an Amber Alert for the girl shortly after the shooting.

A BMW the suspects and missing girl had last been seen in was found abandoned in the border town of San Ysidro about a week later, officials said. The FBI joined the search for the missing girl and suspects.

The City of Carson and the County of Los Angeles teamed up to offer a $20,000 reward in connection with the killing.

KTLA’s Nidia Becerra contributed to this report.

A man suspected in a Carson homicide was arrested last week in Mexico after a months-long search, but the woman and teenage girl he was believed to be traveling with are still missing, authorities said.

Roman Cerratos, 39, was extradited to Los Angeles on Friday, but charges against him have not yet been filed with the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, officials said.

Maricela Mercado, 40, who is also a suspect in the Carson homicide investigation, and her daughter, 15-year-old Alora Benitez, have not been located, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials.

Investigators linked Cerratos and Mercado to the killing of 32-year-old Jeffery Appel, whose body was found April 16 in the front seat of a white Audi parked in the 400 block of East Carson Plaza Drive. Two days later, sheriff’s officials posted a bulletin asking for the public’s help in finding the pair, who were said to be armed and dangerous.

Authorities said the two were seen traveling with a teenage girl the morning of April 17 in Torrance in a white 2013 BMW sedan with a plate that read MARIMAR.

That day, Cerratos was stopped by a deputy in nearby Lomita and cited for a DUI warrant, said Sgt. Andrew Gill of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s station in Lomita. He was immediately released after the citation.

Gill said he did not know what vehicle Cerratos was driving when he was pulled over or whether anyone was in the car with him.

“Obviously we wouldn’t have known he was implicated in a homicide, or we wouldn’t have let him go,” he said.

Authorities found the missing BMW sedan abandoned two days later in the San Ysidro area, a major border crossing to Mexico.

Two months after the car was found, Cerratos was escorted by FBI agents from Guadalajara to Los Angeles, according to FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.

Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman with the L.A. County district attorney’s office, said Cerratos was scheduled to appear in a Bellflower courthouse Monday for a probation violation case related to driving under the influence. He pleaded guilty in 2012 to two misdemeanor counts related to the DUI case.

Anyone with information about the case or the whereabouts of Mercado or Alora can call the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous tips should be directed to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

    Update Alora Benitez is found

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A woman wanted in a Carson murder has been arrested, and her missing teenage daughter has been found with her, sheriff's officials said Wednesday.

Maricela Mercado was detained in Chihuahua, Mexico, and daughter Alora Benitez was located with her on Tuesday, with the assistance of the FBI and local law enforcement, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Mercado and Alora Benitez were deported from Mexico, deemed to have entered the country illegally. They were transported to the Paso Del Norte port of entry and were delivered to agents from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Mercado was then arrested by officers in El Paso pursuant to the warrant issued in Los Angeles for the murder of Jeffrey Appel.

FBI agents took custody of Benitez pending return to California and reunification with her family. Mercado will remain in custody in El Paso, pending extradition to California, sheriff's officials said.

The arrest comes about one month after suspect Roman Cerratos was arrested in Mexico in connection with the same murder investigation. The search for the two suspects in the murder investigation triggered an Amber Alert in April for Benitez, who is now 16.

"I'm on a roller coaster of emotions right now, things I'm finding out, I'm just hoping for the best right now," said Julian Benitez, the father of Alora.

Alora's family held vigils and prayed for the girl's return.

"What do you expect in situations like this from kids who have been exposed to traumatic things like this? I don't know. I'm going to find out, won't quit," the father said.

Detectives are continuing their investigation into the shooting death of Appel that occurred in the 400 block of East Carson Plaza Drive in Carson on April 16 at 6:30 a.m.

Cerratos and Mercado had been last seen driving a white 2013 BMW four-door sedan with Nevada license plate MARIMAR. That vehicle was later recovered unoccupied in San Diego in late April, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
