LOS ANGELES — The Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle was killed in a shooting outside his clothing store in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, law enforcement sources said. Two other men were shot, and a suspect remained at large.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's Crisis Response Team confirmed the news on Sunday night, saying, "Today we lost a great musician, Nipsey Hussle." It said it was "consoling and offering support to the family."

Police sources said Hussle was shot multiple times in the parking lot at Marathon Clothing on West Slauson Avenue in South Los Angeles at about 3:25 p.m. and that he was pronounced dead at a hospital. One of the other men was being treated at a hospital, and the third man declined treatment, Los Angeles police Lt. Chris Martinez said.

No other information was immediately available, but just a couple of hours before, Hussle, 33, whose real name was Ermias Ashgedom, had tweeted, "Having strong enemies is a blessing."

A large crowd of people, many of them crying, gathered at the intersection as police and media helicopters whirred overhead.

One of them was Matthew Talley of Denver, the engineer and director known as Megatron.

"It ain't just Los Angeles. He was an inspiration that was bigger than Los Angeles," Talley said. "You see all these people out here? ...

"He was really cool," Talley said. "He was a dope individual every time I met him."

Hussle's debut studio album, "Victory Lap" was nominated for Best Rap Album at this year's Grammy Awards.

Hussle had long been associated with the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips, one of Los Angeles' largest street gangs, which he publicly acknowledged in a 2010 interview with Complex magazine.

In more recent years, however, Hussle had developed an interest in technology and community development, and he was part of a team of artists and entrepreneurs who developed Destination Crenshaw, an open-air museum devoted to honoring African-American artistic achievement.

The shooting was reported around 3:20 p.m. in the 3400 block of Slauson Avenue in Hyde Park. Hussle owns a store called Marathon Clothing at 3420 W. Slauson.

The Los Angeles Police Department said three people were shot in the area, one fatally, though they did not release any official victim information.

Multiple media reports indicated Hussle was the person killed in the shooting.

Hussle may have sensed trouble coming Sunday. A short time before the shooting was reported, he tweeted: "Having strong enemies is a blessing."

Hundreds of fans and local residents came out to the store location to mourn the rapper and share stories about how he was helping the local community where he grew up.

Marquesha Lawson sobbed as she recalled Hussle and how he helped the community and was offering to help her daughter's modeling career.

"I was a childhood friend," Lawson said. "I've known him all my life. He was like family to me."

"He cared about us. We cared about him."

Police said Hussle and the two other victims were standing outside the store in the parking lot when the shooting occurred. They have not yet determined a motive, but said they are looking for a single male gunman who fled the area.

Investigators are talking to witnesses and canvassing the area for surveillance video.

The 33-year-old rapper, born Ermias Asghedom, grew up in Los Angeles. He was nominated for a Grammy this year for his debut studio album "Victory Lap."

Hussle opened the clothing store in June 2017 at an event that included appearances from NBA players Russell Westbrook, DeMarcus Cousins and some notable rappers.

A shooting and stabbing was also reported at Hussle's Hyde Park store last year.

Police responded to the store for that shooting report on Sept. 14, 2018, but did not find any suspects or victims and witnesses were uncooperative.

    Police is speculating gang connections

Police are continuing to seek the killer of rapper Nipsey Hussle, who was shot outside his store in South Los Angeles in a burst of gunfire that injured two other people, officials told the Los Angeles Times.

The Grammy-nominated rapper (legal name: Ermias Asghedom), whose business efforts in his native neighborhood made him a local hero as well as a celebrity, was pronounced dead after being shot multiple times in front of Marathon Clothing, the store he’d opened last year on the corner of Slauson and Crenshaw.

Hussle, 33, was shot at close range by a young man who then ran to a waiting getaway car, a source close to the situation told the Times, adding that based on initial information, the shooting is probably gang-related

At a news briefing Sunday night, a police spokesman said the suspect is a black male and is still at large.

“At this point, we’re not even sure as to whether he walked up, rode a bicycle or drove up in a car,” the official said.

Hussle had spoken often of his gang affiliations as a teenager, saying in a 2014 interview
“We dealt with death, with murder,” he told The Times in 2018. “It was like living in a war zone, where people die on these blocks and everybody is a little bit immune to it.”

Hundreds of fans and neighbors gathered outside Marathon Clothing to pay tribute after the shooting.

A resident named Glenn Taylor told the Times that Hussle owned several businesses on the block where he was shot, and spoke of his kindness to the community, giving jobs to struggling residents, donating money and clothing to a local elementary school.

“He did so much for our neighborhood,” he said. “That’s why I’m here today. This has to stop.”

L.A. City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson also released a statement, saying “Hussle had a vision of a neighborhood built for and by the sons and daughters of South L.A. During his life, he moved from shadows into the bright hope of freedom and community revitalization.”

Eric Holder has been named as a suspect for killing Nipsey Hussle

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Police have arrested the suspect in the shooting death of Nipsey Hussle.

Authorities had identified 29-year-old Eric Ronald Holder, as the one who shot the rapper in front of his Hyde Park clothing store on Sunday. Two other people were wounded in the shooting.

The LAPD said a member of the public called in a tip around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday saying they thought they saw Holder in the 9900 block of Artesia Boulevard in Bellflower.

Sheriff's deputies responded and detained the man until LAPD detectives could arrive to confirm he was Holder.

Hussle died of gunshot wounds to the head and torso, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

The suspect allegedly fled the scene in a white 2016 Chevy Cruze with California license plate 7RJD742, with an unidentified woman as the getaway driver.

By Sunday night, police had publicly identified Holder as the suspect.

The exact nature of the conflict between Hussle and the suspect was not clear. But it was described as a personal dispute, not gang-related.

But Hussle seemed to know he was in the middle of a challenging time. A short time before the shooting was reported, he tweeted: "Having strong enemies is a blessing."

Police said Hussle and the two other victims were standing outside the store in the parking lot when the shooting occurred.

The 33-year-old rapper, born Ermias Joseph Asghedom, grew up in Los Angeles. He was nominated for the best rap album Grammy this year for his studio debut "Victory Lap."

Hussle is survived by two children and fiancee, actress Lauren London, according to AP.

Hussle opened the clothing store in June 2017.

I read something yesterday that made me pretty sad. A woman posted about her husband -- just an electrical tech for the city -- who would always talk to her about a lovely man who came out to chat with him while he was working, offering him water, etc. He called he crying the other day because the man was Nipsey. He didn't know him as anything but kind.

    This sucks.

Prosecutors on Thursday filed charges of murder and attempted murder against Eric Holder, the man accused of killing South L.A. rapper Nipsey Hussle.

Holder is being held on $5 million bail. He appeared in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on Thursday afternoon, where he was represented by attorney Chris Darden. Darden entered a not guilty plea on his behalf, according to a report from KNX reporter Claudia Peschiutta.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged Holder with four counts, including one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Two men were also injured in the shooting outside Marathon Clothing at Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue. The two victims are identified in the criminal complaint as Kerry Lathan and Shermi Cervabta Villanueva.

Holder, 29, also faces a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.

In 2012, Holder pleaded no contest to a charge of carrying a loaded weapon in a public place. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail and three years of probation.

LAPD chief Michel Moore said on Tuesday that Holder and Hussle got into a dispute at the clothing store. Holder left and came back with a gun, shooting Hussle several times before fleeing in a white Chevy Cruze. Though both men had gang affiliations, the motive for the shooting does not appear to be gang-related.

Holder was arrested on Wednesday in Bellflower by L.A. County sheriff’s deputies and turned over to the LAPD.

THere are talks to rename a street corner Nipsey Hussle square.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A proposal has been introduced to rename a South Los Angeles intersection after slain rapper and community activist Nipsey Hussle.

Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson announced on Twitter Tuesday that he will submit a motion to rename the intersection at Crenshaw Boulevard and West Slauson Avenue as "Ermias 'Nipsey Hussle' Asghedom Square."

Proud to honor #nipseyhussle by dedicating #crenshaw and #slauson as "Nipsey Hussle Square". https://t.co/5eqCjB8TAx pic.twitter.com/CbDrcNEodj

The 33-year-old Hussle, a beloved community activist in his native South Los Angeles and beyond, was gunned down March 31 in front of his clothing store near the intersection Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard. Two other men were wounded in the shooting.

A manhunt ensued, culminating in the arrest of 29-year-old Eric R. Holder Jr. The suspect was being held on $5 million bail after pleading not guilty Thursday to charges of murder and attempted murder.

Hussle, born Ermias Joseph Asghedom, grew up in Los Angeles. He was nominated for the best rap album Grammy this year for his studio debut "Victory Lap." He opened the clothing store in June 2017. He was described as someone who was working to improve the community where he grew up and had reached out to Los Angeles officials to work on ways to reduce gang violence.

Meantime, Nipsey Hussle's Celebration of Life is set for this Thursday morning at Staples Center in downtown L.A.

    Update

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The man wounded in the shooting that killed Nipsey Hussle is expected to be released from custody soon.

Kerry Lathan took a bullet near his spine and was then arrested by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on a parole violation for associating with a known gang member.

The department made the arrest after determining Hussle was a documented gang member. But since his death, the rapper has been categorized by many -- including Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti -- as a pillar of the community.

Lathan said it was by chance he was in proximity to the rapper when the gunman rolled up.

The Department of Corrections announced Thursday it will drop the new allegations and work to get Lathan released.

Nipsey Hussle's alleged killer has 'significant mental health history,' his new lawyer says

    https://www.nydailynews.com/snyde/ny...3bu-story.html

LOS ANGELES ' A new lawyer for Nipsey Hussle's accused killer said the long-delayed murder case should go to trial by early December.

Deputy Public Defender Aaron Jansen appeared on behalf of Eric Holder in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday after the previous public defender on the case was appointed to serve as a state judge.

'A lot of the work was done by my predecessor. Hopefully, by the end of the year, maybe early December, we can go to trial,' Jansen told the Daily News after the court agreed to postpone the trial setting yet again and set a followup hearing for Sept. 7.

Asked about his plans for Holder's defense, Jansen declined to get specific but offered some clues.

'He does have a significant mental health history,' he said of his client. 'One of the things affecting him [in March 2019] was that his mother had just passed away. He was pretty despondent.'

Holder previously was represented by former O.J. Simpson prosecutor Christopher Darden, who stepped down citing threats to his family.

The case was later postponed repeatedly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the retirement of its previously assigned judge.

Holder has pleaded not guilty to charges claiming he fired multiple rounds into Hussle from two different guns, killing the Grammy-winning rapper on March 31, 2019.

Holder was in the courthouse for the hearing Tuesday but did not appear before Judge Clay Jacke because Jansen wanted his handcuffs removed before two TV cameras could start recording.

After conferring with a sheriff's official, Jacke said he needed more time to consider the handcuffs matter and allowed Jansen to appear without his client present.

'I did not want him portrayed in a way that would be prejudicial to him,' Jansen told The News after the hearing.

'He's in good spirits,' he said of his client. 'He wants me to send him some books. He's so isolated [in custody]. He doesn't get out of his cell much, only one day a week for a few hours to play basketball alone.'

Holder, 31, recently asked for a break on his 'extremely high' $6.5 million bail, claiming he's not a risk to the public. Jacke denied the request in April.

The filing argued Holder isn't a flight risk because he doesn't hold a passport and has significant family ties to the community, including a father who's a government worker.
