The Linn County Sheriff's Office, along with other agencies, searched a home at 4069 Soutter Ave SE in Cedar Rapids Thursday and found the remains buried there. The body has been taken to the state medical examiner's office for identification.

"it appears the body may have a connection to the disappearance of Christopher Bagley, who went missing December 14, 2018," the sheriff's office said in a release.

Chris's father, Stewart, said in a message, "it is with heartfelt sorrow the Bagley family has to announce that the body of Chris has been found."

"I'm sure there a lot of questions people have and the answers will come out over time," Courtney Bagley, Chris's wife, said in a statement Friday afternoon. "But we are happy that this part of our nightmare is over."

The Linn County Sheriff's Office used shovels, a pickaxe, and even a skid loader to help in the search at the Soutter Ave SE home, according to neighbors. Investigators have not said what led them to search at that home.

Investigators have also not named any suspect or announced any arrests connected to the search or the remains.

Bagley's family last saw him leaving with an acquaintance on December 14 and offered a $25,000 reward for his safe return. Rumors swirled for weeks on whether Bagley was connected to drugs or possibly ran off with friends.

"You don't even know what to think because it's just so bizarre," said Courtney Bagley, holding back tears in an interview in January. "Everything is just so all over the place. I don't even know where these stories come from."

Bagley's disappearance has been hardest on his wife and kids. He has a son Mason, 8, and a daughter, Sophia, who is four. His wife said she's trying to stay strong for the little ones.

The trial has been pushed back for man who federal investigators say confessed to stabbing Chris Bagley to death, for state charges unrelated to Bagley’s death. Bagley, who lived in Walker, disappeared in mid-December and his remains were recovered in March at a Cedar Rapids home mentioned in court documents to have been occupied by a man named Drew Wagner.

Drew Blahnik, 32, has pleaded not guilty to one count of controlled substance violation and one count of failure to affix drug stamp. At a hearing Wednesday in the Linn County Courthouse, his trial, originally set for July, was pushed back to August 12.
Blahnik also faces federal charges unrelated to Bagley’s death. March 19, he was indicted with federal possession of a firearm by a drug user, but has not yet been arraigned. He is being held in federal custody at the Linn County courthouse.

High-profile defense attorney Leon Spies represents Blahnik in both federal and state cases.

In April, during a detention hearing for Andrew Shaw, investigators testified that Drew Blahnik confessed to fatally stabbing Bagley, for robbing Shaw, a large-scale drug trafficker in the Cedar Rapids area. Shaw has pleaded not guilty to a federal charge of possession of a firearm by a drug user.

Linn County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden, who is currently handling the case, has not yet filed any charges related to Bagley’s death. When CBS2 news spoke to Vander Sanden earlier this month, he said that he had received “probably over 600 pages of reports; just as many photographs, and roughly 20 video-taped interviews.” Vander Sanden said he can’t provide a timeline for a charging decision, but his office is “trying to expedite our review of the case.”

A February 2021 murder trial for Drew Blahnik will be held in Linn County, a judge decided late Monday evening.

Judge Christopher Bruns writes in his decision that Blahnik's defense attorney Leon Spies failed to prove there is a substantial likelihood of jury prejudice.

Blahnik is accused of murder in the December 2018 death of Chris Bagley; Blahnik was co-defendants with Drew Wagner, who took a plea deal for his role in the murder.

Drew Wagner, one of the men charged in connection with the murder of Chris Bagley, pleaded guilty to lesser charges Monday.

Wagner, 34, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, assault while participating in a felony, conspiracy to commit a forcible felony, abuse of a corpse, and obstructing prosecution. In a separate case, Wagner pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver marijuana and a drug tax stamp violation. He faces up to 42 years in prison combined on all charges. Wagner had previously faced charges of first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, and obstructing prosecution.

Sentencing will be set once another suspect in the case, Drew Blahnik, has his trial on murder charges in the case. Blahnik’s trial is scheduled to begin Feb. 15, 2021.

Bagley’s family attended Monday’s hearing, and his father, Stewart, said afterward that they were satisfied with the agreement.
