A high school love triangle apparently sparked a stabbing inside a Michigan classroom Wednesday that left a 16-year-old straight A student dead and a 17-year-old classmate in custody and facing a murder charge, police said.

The two girls had once been friends but apparently had a falling out over dating the same boy, police said.

The violent confrontation occurred about 8:30 a.m. at Fitzgerald High School in Warren, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, when the older student pulled out a kitchen steak knife and stabbed the victim twice in the chest, Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said during a press conference.

"Truly a tragedy on both sides ? the suspect and the victim," Dwyer said. "Two lives ruined."

The victim was taken to St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, where she died at 9:24 a.m., he said. She was identified as Danyna Gibson by Fitzgerald Public Schools Superintendent Laurie Fournier.

The suspect's name was not released.

"It's possible that both the victim and the suspect had a relationship with the male student," Dwyer said.

The incident occurred shortly after school began Wednesday, Dwyer said. He said that 20 to 30 other students and their teacher were in the classroom when the 17-year-old honor student pulled out a steak knife and attacked Danyna.

"They didn't see it coming. It happened very quickly," Dwyer said.

There are no metal detectors at the school, Dwyer noted.

A school resource officer was immediately rushed to the classroom upon hearing screams and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim until paramedics arrived, Dwyer said.

The suspect stayed at the scene and was escorted to the principal's office, where she was taken into custody without incident, Dwyer said. The knife, which police believe the suspect brought from home, was recovered, he said.

"I can only say that the victim and the suspect knew each other and the male student knew both of the suspect and the victim and that may have been one of the reasons why this occurred," Dwyer said.

He said the male student, who is 16 or 17 years old, has been interviewed by police and is cooperating in the investigation.

No other students were injured in the deadly altercation.

"All parties involved are straight-A students and neither has been involved in any trouble at all," Dwyer said.

He said the suspect was taken to the Warren Police Department for questioning.

"She did make some admissions," said Dwyer, who declined to elaborate. "We will be asking for a murder warrant."

He said it will be up to the Macomb County District Attorney's Office to decide whether to charge the suspect with murder.

Dwyer said investigators are also reviewing text messages exchanged between the victim and her suspected killer but he did not disclose the contents of the messages.

Investigators were also reviewing social media posts but have yet to find anything to suggest something violent was brewing, he said.

"There was no type of pre-warning or advanced information that would put us on alert that this was possibly planned. We had no information whatsoever," Dwyer said.

Dwyer described Danyna as an outgoing student who was a member of the school's cross country team, robotics club, color guard, marching band, National Honors Society, student council and an organization called A Generation of Promise.

Grief counseling was being provided for students, particularly those who witnessed the stabbing, said Superintendent Fournier. She said all classes at the school were canceled for the remainder of Wednesday and that the school will be closed on Thursday. She said a vigil for Danyna will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday on the high school football field.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the student's family and we offer our deepest sympathy," Fournier said in a statement posted on the school district's website. "We are working very closely with the police department on this matter as well as conducting an internal school review of the incident which will review all our current safety procedures and protocols."

This *might* be Danyna but it's totally locked down so it's hard to tell

A 17-year-old girl was smiling and laughing after she allegedly stabbed a classmate to death at a Michigan high school, prosecutors said in court Friday, according to ABC Detroit affiliate WXYZ.

Tanaya Lewis was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the stabbing that killed a 16-year-old girl, Macomb County Prosecutor's Office told ABC News. She appeared at her charging hearing Friday morning via video chat, a photo published by WXYZ shows.

Lewis allegedly stabbed the victim twice in the upper chest -- once to the heart -- after approaching her Wednesday morning at Fitzgerald High School in Warren, a suburb of Detroit, police said.

The confrontation occurred during a class transition, WYXZ reported. The victim then tried to run away, but Lewis chased after her and stabbed her in the back, piercing her lung, according to WXYZ.
After the teacher pushed her away, Lewis allegedly attempted to get around the teacher and yelled, "I'm going to kill her," prosecutors said in court Friday, WXYZ reported. Witnesses told authorities that she was smiling and laughing after the stabbing, according to the station.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and died less than an hour later, Dwyer said.

In Michigan, a person is considered an adult in criminal law at age 17.

She's a sociopath. Lock her up until she's 55...otherwise who knows what else she would do.

A 17-year-old Warren Fitzgerald High student will be tried in the fatal stabbing of a classmate last September, Warren 37th District Judge Matthew Sabaugh ruled Friday at the end of a preliminary examination.

Tanaya Lewis is charged with first-degree premeditated murder in the Sept. 12 death of 16-year-old Danyna Gibson.

Authorities allege Lewis brought a steak knife to school and stabbed Gibson with it during class in front of 20 witnesses. The girls were described by police as straight-A students who had apparently argued and texted each over a student, “Evan,” whom both had dated.

Sabaugh said Friday from the evidence and testimony he heard it was clear that the crime occurred, Lewis was involved and the offense “met the standards of first-degree premeditated murder.”
Warren Police Detective James Twardesky testified when he initially began his questioning of Lewis about the incident and asked whether Lewis knew Gibson, she said. “I don’t like her … I hate her.”

Twardesky testified Lewis described Evan, a classmate, as the “love of her life” and said they had broken up over the summer. But the pair were working on their relationship and Gibson “was ruining everything.”

Lewis told Twardesky she got up around 5 a.m. on Sept. 12, fed her dog and was driven to school by Evan.

“She said she gave him some things she wouldn’t need any more, $100 and some other things,” Twardesky said.

Witnesses told police Lewis smiled and laughed as she chased Gibson with the knife. According to police, a teacher finally pushed Lewis out of the classroom.

“She didn’t remember much, said the air was thick in the room,” said Twardesky. “She said it was dark. She said she looked at Ms.Gibson and she seemed scared.”

Lewis initially didn’t remember having a knife and later recalled she took a knife from the kitchen after feeding her dog at home. On cross examination, defense attorney Mark Brown asked Twardesky if Lewis was on any medication and the detective said the teen told her she was taking something, possibly for depression.

Macomb County assistant prosecutor Bill Cataldo told Sabaugh the known facts required that Lewis be tried.

“She was angry at Gibson and at Evan,” Cataldo told Sabaugh. “… She had texted they were going to get it.”

“…Just before the stabbing, she texted Evan: ‘It’s time.’” Cataldo said.

A 19-year-old woman has pleaded no contest to first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a classmate during a fight inside a Detroit-area high school.

Tanaya Lewis’ plea Wednesday came during a pretrial conference in Macomb County Circuit Court and was made under a guarantee she will be eligible for parole later in life. Her sentencing is set for Sept. 16.

A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing.

Lewis was 17 when 16-year-old Danyna Gibson was stabbed in the upper chest and back with a steak knife Sept. 12, 2018 at Warren Fitzgerald High School. Witnesses told police Lewis smiled and laughed as she chased Gibson with the knife.

Authorities have said the fight was over a male student, and that both girls were straight-A students who had no history of trouble.

Defense attorney Mark Brown said the plea deal locks in Lewis' sentence.

“It’s in her best interests to do this considering all of the circumstances,” he said. "It’s a horrible situation all the way around and this is a fair resolution.”

Prosecutors declined to seek life without parole because of Lewis’ age and inability to appreciate the long-term consequences of her actions, The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reported.

“This was a calculated, thought-out, intentional event, but because she was 17-years-old (she) lacked the frontal cortex (brain) development to fully recognized the long-term consequences," Assistant Macomb Prosecutor William Cataldo said.

It shouldn't be legal to sentence a juvenile to live without the possibility of parole. What kind of society throws a kid away like that?

Yes, that was what prompted my comment. She made the plea so she would be eligible for parole, but I don't think it should be legal to ever sentence a juvenile to life without parole. I'm not saying they should necessarily BE paroled, some of them might have to be kept behind bars for life - but their cases should be regularly reviewed.

Michigan student who fatally stabbed classmate gets 27 years

    https://nypost.com/2020/09/17/michig...gets-27-years/

A Michigan woman who fatally stabbed her high school rival in a dispute over her ex-boyfriend was sentenced this week to at least 27 years in prison.

Tanaya Lewis, 19, pleaded no contest last month to first-degree premeditated murder in the September 2018 death of her 16-year-old classmate, Danyna Gibson, whom investigators said was stabbed with a steak knife inside a classroom at Fitzgerald High School in Warren, the Detroit Free Press reports.

“If could take it back, I would,” Lewis said during Wednesday’s hearing. “I accept the punishment … and I know no amount of apologies will take it back … and I’m so, so sorry. I just hope one day, you’ll be [able to] forgive me.”

Lewis, who was then 17, said she still has nightmares about attacking Gibson – a straight-A student — with a kitchen knife that she brought to school and stabbed her several times in front of other students and a teacher, the newspaper reports.

Lewis, who will be eligible for parole after 25 years due to credit for time served, could have received a maximum sentence of 40 to 60 years if a plea deal hadn’t been reached between her attorney and a judge. If she had been convicted as an adult, she would have received life without parole, the Macomb Daily reports.

Danyna’s aunt, Christina Ford, read a statement via video on behalf of the teen’s mother, who said there’s “really no words” to explain the pain caused by losing a child, especially in such a violent way.

“I mourn the loss of my baby every day,” the statement read. “Times does not heal. It is more of a punishment because the more time that passes the more I realize I will never see my baby again.”

Gibson’s family is unable to make sense of or forgive Lewis for the slaying, Ford said.

“You took a life that was so beautiful,” her statement on behalf of Gibson’s family continued. “All I ask is that the Lord have mercy on your soul.”

Danyna wanted to become a computer engineer and was already learning how to build robots, her father said.

“I feel like I was robbed by the system,” Preston Gibson said. “I feel like I was robbed by her mother and I feel like I was robbed by a teenager. Although my baby’s not here, I’m still paying child support, my baby’s dead and I don’t get no justice for it. This is how I feel. Everybody who played a part in her death … f— you all.”
