Well apparently a sting operation was to take place in Australia and yes the Vigilantes were planning a hunt on its targets in Western Australia.

A 28 year-old Perth man has been violently assaulted after he was targeted through the Grindr dating app.

On the evening of Friday 20th July the man began chatting with a another profile on the app, after a conversation they agreed to meet up. The man arrived at the agreed location and was lured to nearby Bennett Park in Doubleview.

In the park he was met by a group of young men who assaulted him, leaving him with a black eye, bruises and potential facial bone fractures. The group of men shouted gay slurs calling him “a fag” and accused him of being “a pedo”.

The men attempted to take his wallet and mobile phone, but he was able to escape and return to his car. The assault occurred between 10:30pm and 11:00pm on Friday night.

The assault is similar to a series of attacks that were carried out against gay and bisexual men in Perth’s southern suburbs in 2017.

In December last year 20 year-old James Joseph Katchan was sentenced to six years in jail for his role in the five attacks, while 19 year-old Cody Parkinson was sentenced to two years imprisonment for his role in one of the assaults.

In 2013 Perth man Warren Batchelor was killed when he was attacked by two men. Batchelor and another man had been having consensual sex inside a public toilet cubicle at a park in Middle Swan when they were attacked by Daniel Wade Taylor and Mark Jones. Both Taylor and Jones received life sentences and will not be eligible for parole until 2034.
Here is the lead up to the detained 7 people accused of vigilante stings

    From the local article.

. At least six Perth school boys and one girl have been charged over an elaborate scheme to try and catch pedophiles using the dating app Grindr.

9News understands that up to ten students created a fake profile on the social networking app to lure older men to parks and mug them.

The three robberies took place last weekend at parks in the Scarborough area.

When the men arrived they were allegedly mugged by the gang, and on one occasion a victim was allegedly assaulted.

Sources have told 9News the teens were operating on the belief that they were delivering some sort of vigilante justice.

The teenagers, all aged between 15 and 17, attend the same Western Suburbs high school and so far at least seven of them have been charged, with possibly more to come.

They'll face Perth Children's court next month.

Why do they keep using the word 'vigilante'? I don't think it fits in that context.

Some apps give a lot of your info including where you're location. Which is scary. I stay away from apps like that.
These kids are so young to be committing crimes like this but I guess age really doesn't matter.

This is interesting though and I'd like to follow it. Ty for posting this. 😌

Australia, WA in particular, is really big on framing hate crimes as "vigilante attacks" instead of admitting their citizens are targetting people for violent assault based on their race or LGBTQ status.

That might not be the case here, maybe this guy really believed he was meeting up with a child, but the cases like this in WA last year sounded a lot more like gay hate than they did child protection.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. A lot of what has been posted on here lately and labeled as "vigilante" is really some asshole beating the shit out of someone who is a different race or sexual orientation.

Also, even if these crimes supposedly happened, we have a court system to deal with it. Vigilantism is not something to be admired. If everyone decides to "take justice into their own hands" everyone is going to be in danger of being beaten or killed in today's Trumpy society where everyone hates everyone else who doesn't look/act just like they do, and who thinks different races/sexual orientation are always up to something criminal.

They lured him to that location to rob him, that's not vigilante justice.

In Canada there was a similar scandal involving "vigilantes"

    https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/4...l-disabilities

    https://bc.ctvnews.ca/creep-catchers...cate-1.3172215

Creep Catchers leader Ryan LaForge tried to play "this is hero blaming" card but LaForge got sued and was proven guilty in a Canadian court for violating the rights of mentally disabled people targeted in the stings.

I think most of these so -called vigilantes are big bullies that need attention and want someone to hero worship them and tell them what an awesome job they are doing. Nothing more.

Yes blackmail and extortion has come into play in an unrelated case.

But back to Australia I remember some articles accused 7 people and another article accused 10 people for the Grindr attacks. Sure the headlines sound odd but they get traced back to robbery though.

True especially in the Philippines there was stories that were framed as "Fighting corruption", "Fighting the Bloody Drug issue" but it ended up with the Presidents opposition being killed because the Duterte accused them of Corruption and Drugs.

Especially in India in the recent lynching incidents the murderers tried framing their actions as justified to stop children from being victimized and it turned out to be crazier and global where What's app was accused of spreading fake news that's leading to people being killed in India.

Essentially these cases were thug trying to be somehow righteous but in reality they were willing to be insane in the process though.

One of the 17-year-olds was charged and remanded to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning.

Officers arrested another two teenagers on Friday evening on suspicion of involvement in the attacks, bringing the total number of arrests to five.

The teenagers aged 17 and 18 were questioned by detectives, and the 17-year-old was charged with one count of robbery.

He has been remanded to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday at 10am.

The other three teenagers arrested as part of the investigation have been released under police bail with strict conditions.

Police said the safest place for people planning to meet someone they have contacted on any dating app is in a well-populated public area.
