'Stillborn' baby girl comes alive at funeral

A BABY girl declared stillborn by a Malaysian hospital shocked her grieving parents when she started moving as they prepared to bury her, a report said.

The father, Azmi Masiron, said he and other mourners in a village in northern Kedah state noticed a tiny movement from the baby as she lay on a funeral shroud, shortly after being declared dead.

“When my father-in-law placed the baby on the burial shroud, she suddenly moved, shocking about 200 villagers who had gathered for the funeral,” Mr Azmi was quoted saying by the New Straits Times.

The 26-year-old father said he had been informed by the doctor of his daughter's death minutes after his wife, Nordewiyana Din, 28, delivered the baby prematurely.

The baby, who was wrapped in a cloth, had not moved during the five-kilometre ride from the hospital to his village for the funeral, Mr Azmi said.

“I am really upset. I hope this does not happen to another parent,” he said, adding he would take his complaint about the hospital to police.

The baby, who only weighed 330g, was rushed back to hospital and placed in an incubator but survived for only about eight hours before she died, state Bernama news agency reported.

The baby died at the same hospital she was born, in a district in northern Kedah state.

Kedah state health director, Hasnah Ismail said initial investigations revealed that the baby had been declared dead after no signs of breathing or a heartbeat were recorded.

A doctor had waited for almost an hour before declaring the 20-week old premature infant as dead, Bernama reported.

We really don't even know if they had provided medical care immediately if she would have survived, the odds would have been better though. What a nightmare for the family.

How long of a drive was that to the hospital? I'm kind of dumb. But that really does have to be heart breaking for the family. When I first started reading this I was thinking this was one of those cases where she really was dead but her body let out gases..

RIP little one.

One must question the Malay definition of "dead". Each culture defines "death" differently.

It's also Malaysia. Not really my top choice in countries were I'd like to spend time in the hospital.
Life is great - without it, you'd be dead.

Note to self, If I ever visit Malaysia, try not to get injured or into any situation that I need any form of health care.

I wonder if the child would have made it if they hadn't been unhooked from the machines for so long.
