    Archer Amorosi (16)

Minnetonka High School Student Shot, Killed By Police

CHANHASSEN, Minn. (WCCO) ? Minutes after Carver County Deputies arrived at a Chanhassen home, an emergency response call turned into a fatal police shooting.

Right around 10 a.m. Friday, a woman called authorities for help, saying her son was suicidal and threatening her with knives and a baseball bat at a home on the 6400 block of Oriole Avenue.

When deputies arrived, they encountered a boy, first deploying a Taser and later shooting their guns, hitting and killing 16-year-old Archer Amorosi.

Amorosi was pronounced dead at the scene, but it?s still unclear exactly what prompted those deputies to fire those fatal shots.

Memories and condolences quickly poured out for the Minnetonka High School student on social media.

The Minnetonka High School Lacrosse Team wrote on Twitter: ?Unfortunately we lost one of our teammates today. Archer was a high energy, funny and loving kid who will always be remembered by this team and this community. Rest easy Archer, we will miss you incredibly and love you forever.?

Another aspect of this incident that?s still unclear is whether or not there was any video of this incident.

The Carver County Sheriff?s Office does not use body cameras, but there may be video recording from a squad car.

Both of the deputies who fired their weapons are on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Authorities release more details of teen's fatal shooting by police

The officers that shot and killed Archer Amorosi were identified.

    Archer Amarosi

The officers involved in the shooting death of a 16-year-old in Chanhassen on Friday, July 13 have been identified by the Minnesot Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).

Corporal Jacob Hodge and Deputy Travis Larson, both with the Carver County Sheriff's Office, fired their guns on Archer Amorosi at 6451 Oriole Lane in Chanhassen. Amorosi died of multiple gunshot wounds, the Medical Examiner's Office determined.

In addition to the identity of the officers involved, the BCA released additional information about what led to authorities using deadly force.

Deputies responded to a 911 call from Amorosi's mother, who reported that her son was suicidal and threatening her with knives and a baseball bat.

The BCA says Amorosi refused repeated orders from deputies to leave the house, and that attempts to Taser and pepper spray him through a window were ineffective. At one point, Amorosi ran out of the house with what deputies believed to be a hatchet and "what appeared to be a handgun," the BCA notes.

That prompted more warnings from deputies and another unsuccessful attempt to Taser Amorosi, which led to Hodge and Larson opening fire, killing him.

The BCA recovered a hatchet and "handgun-style BB-gun" near Amorosi's body.

Corporal Hodge has been with the sheriff's office for 18 years and Deputy Larson for 11 years. Both have been placed on standard administrative leave.

More information will be made available when the BCA's investigation is complete.

CHANHASSEN, Minn. - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the deputies who discharged their weapons in the fatal shooting of a teenager in Chanhassen.

Carver County Sheriff's deputies responded to a home in Chanhassen on July 13 after a woman called 911 reporting that her son was suicidal and was threatening her with knives and a baseball bat, according to the BCA.

When deputies arrived, the son, 16-year-old Archer Amorosi, refused orders to exit the house, the BCA says. According to the BCA, deputies deployed a Taser and pepper spray through a window but they were ineffective. The BCA says Amorosi ran out of the home with a hatchet and what appeared to be a handgun, and deputies deployed a Taser again. At one point two deputies shot their weapons, striking and killing Amorosi, according to the BCA.

On Tuesday, the BCA identified the deputies who discharged their guns as Corporal Jacob Hodge, who has been with the Carver County Sheriff's Office for 18 years, and Deputy Travis Larson, who has been with the department for two years. The BCA says Larson also deployed a Taser and pepper spray.

Larson and Hodge are on standard administrative leave, according to the BCA.

A third deputy, Corporal Josh Baker, was identified as using his Taser. He has been with the department 11 years.

The BCA says investigators found a hatchet and a handgun-style BB gun near Amorosi's body. There was no one else inside the house at the time of the shooting, the BCA says. They report that Amorosi died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Deputy Larson was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after the incident.

Minnetonka High School has identified Amorosi as an incoming junior.

"This situation is heartbreaking and I want to extend my thoughts and prayers to Archer's parents and family, his friends, and the entire Minnetonka High School community. I know this situation is particularly devastating to those of you who knew Archer well," Principal Jeff Erickson wrote in an email that was sent to school families.

"Archer was talented--in and out of the classroom--and greatly enjoyed representing MHS in athletic competition," Erickson continued. "Archer excelled in lacrosse and football--most notably this spring as lacrosse was in the run for the State championship. He had a strong group of friends and highly valued those relationships. He will be deeply missed."

A man who identified himself as Amorosi's father on the shooting scene told KARE 11 the teen was dealing with mental health issues.

"My ex-wife called them because they said if they came back they would take him in for an evaluation. They said wouldn't ask questions," the father stated. "Instead, they killed him."

Body cameras and dash camera video captured parts of the incident and the BCA says its investigation is ongoing.

This is just so sad. Clearly it was not "suicide by cop" and that should be removed from my subject line. This was a young boy who was crying out for help.

Amorosi, Archer Thomas age 16, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, passed away tragically Friday, June 13, 2018. He is preceded in death by great-grandparents, Edward and Janet Porter, Donald and Edith Amorosi; grandmother, Scottie Thomas; and cousin, Hunter Miller. Archer was passionate in everything he pursued and a consummate competitor while also devoted brother and beautiful son, wonderful with children and a lover of dogs. He dreamed of seeing the world, understanding the history of people and the world, and winning at everything he attempted. Archer had a magnetic personality and never hesitated to help someone who he knew was struggling. His family always came first and he protected him like he did the football he carried around with him everywhere he went. His style, humor, kind heart, care for little kids, and ability to memorize anything sports related will forever carry on in the waves of Bethany Beach, in the lacrosse fields across the nation, and in our hearts.
