A Dinwiddie High School teenager was reported missing when she didn't show up for cheer practice on Monday.

The Dinwiddie County Sheriff?s Office confirmed 17-year-old Ke?Asia Adkins was last seen early Monday morning at her Sentry Hill Court home in North Dinwiddie.

"Sometime Monday morning her phone went dead," Adkin's sister Kendra Green stated. "Since, no response and straight to voicemail.""This is not in her character at all to disappear," Green said. "If she?s even going to be 10 minutes late she calls and texts my mom to let her know what?s the situation."

Family said Adkins hasn't texted or called anyone since Monday. She's never run away before either.

?According to her family, this is the first time Ke?Asia has left home and not kept in touch with her family,? a sheriff?s spokesperson said.

If anyone has seen Ke?Asia, please call the Dinwiddie County Sheriff?s Office at 804-469-4550 or Petersburg Dinwiddie Crime Solvers at 804-861-1212.

The Virginia medical examiner’s office says a missing teen found dead earlier this week was suffocated.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch quotes the medical examiner’s office as saying Friday that it has ruled 17-year-old Ke’Asia Adkins’ death a homicide.
The Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office later arrested 21-year-old Anton Deonte Coleman on a charge of abduction. Investigators declined to say how the two are connected, citing the ongoing investigation.

Damn. He's not only a neighbour, he's her cousin. This article says he assaulted his parents a few weeks earlier after coming home from college. If being a violent dick isn't his usual behaviour, something's obviously going on with him right now.

DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. -- The man charged with abducting a 17-year-old cheerleader who was later found dead in the woods behind her home appeared in court Friday morning.

A judge read 21-year-old Anton Deonte Coleman his abduction charge and then he was escorted out of the courtroom after he was given a new court date.

Some of Coleman?s family members appeared in court as sign of support for their loved one.

Ke'Asia Adkins' body was found in the woods near her home on Sentry Hill Court on Thursday, June 28.

The Dinwiddie High School student's cause of death was asphyxia and the manner was homicide, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

    Ke?Aisa Adkins

Adkins, a dancer, singer and cheerleader, was reported missing by her family when she didn't show up for cheer practice earlier that week.

"We were hoping for the best. We were hoping she would come home, but we also knew in the back of our minds it was unlikely," Adkins' sister Kendra Green, told reporter Brendan King last week. "We knew something bad had to happen in order for her not to come home or not to call."

Green said the suspect and Adkins were cousins.

Coleman had recently been away in Georgia playing college football on scholarship, according to his family.

Green stated she didn't know why Coleman may want to harm her sister.

"That?s not the person we grew up with -- last year he was not like that," Green stated. "The videos are hard to watch because that?s not the person we grew up with. That?s not the person we know."

Adkins was excited to join the varsity cheer team and get her driver's license. Those who knew her best described her as someone who loved life.

"She was fun loving, always smiling," Green described. "She was a cheer leader, a dancer, soccer player, and ballet dancer."

The teenager worked for Burger King on Boydton Plank Road for about a year, according to general manager Amanda Berry.

?She was very willing to work whenever you needed her,? Berry said. ?She was very sweet and always willing to help.?

Coleman has not been charged in her murder.

Crime Insider sources confirmed that Coleman is accused of assaulting his stepfather and mother a little more than two weeks before Adkins disappeared.

Coleman, who is being held without bond at Meherrin River Regional Jail, Coleman is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 21 at 10 a.m.

I wonder if he?s experiencing an onset of schizophrenia or some other type of mental illness. I know that his age is consistent with the typical age group for that. It sounds like he?s undergone a dramatic change in personality just recently.

Yeah, I'll be honest - I wondered about schizophrenia & also possible steroid use.

It's hard to tell without knowing if he's always had issues.

    https://www.progress-index.com/news/...ns-murder-case

The county’s top prosecutor said Tuesday she does not intend to seek the death penalty against a county man who now faces a capital murder charge in last June’s death of a Dinwiddie teenager.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Ann Cabell Baskervill said in an email to The Progress-Index that the foundation for a capital-murder charge against Anton Deonte Coleman always has been in place since he initially was arrested for the death of Ke’Asia Adkins. Coleman was initially charged with first-degree murder and abduction with the intent to defile, which Baskerville said is the basis on which a charge of capital murder during an abduction is based.

“It is plain under the law, meanwhile, that the combination of the two charges supports a capital murder charge, which, here, is based on an allegation of willful, deliberate, and premeditated killing in the course of abduction with intent to defile,” Baskervill said. “The evidentiary change ... does increase the burden on the commonwealth, but after having a chance to receive and evaluate our evidence, in filing the capital charge, obviously I am willing to pursue that link. There are some litigation risks with having that burden – risks which certainly informed the discretionary decision on charging – but as matters have developed, the balance on the scales shifted.”

Baskervill said no new evidence came to light that sparked her to seek the higher charge, “but rather, the evaluation, consideration, and assembly of our evidence as it has become ‘presentable’ over the past months.

In Virginia, a capital-murder conviction carries a punishment of death or life-imprisonment. Baskervill said “under no circumstances” will she ask for the death sentence in this case.

    From January:

    https://wtvr.com/2020/01/16/judge-de...s-teen-cousin/

A Dinwiddie County judge declared a mistrial in the case of a man accused of abducting and killing his cousin, Ke’Asia Adkins.

Anton Coleman was charged with second-degree murder in the death of the 17-year-old Dinwiddie girl who disappeared after leaving her home for cheerleading practice.

Ke’Asia was found four days after she was reported missing in June of 2018. She was found in a heavily wooded area near her Dinwiddie home. Her cause of death was ruled asphyxia and the manner was homicide, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Coleman was charged with capital murder in the case, but that charge was amended to second-degree murder during the trial.

The judge declared the case a mistrial more than a week after the trial started.

Coleman will be back in Dinwiddie Circuit Court on January 21 as Dinwiddie County prosecutors move towards a retrial.
