ARRESTS REQUESTED IN THE MADELEINE MCCANN MISSING CHILD CASE

According to the UK’s Mirror, British investigators have asked that Portuguese authorities allow them to arrest three suspects in the case of missing child Madeleine McCann, who went missing in May of 2007 in Portugal.

Prosecutors in the UK have sent a formal Letter of Request to Portuguese police asking that they allow Scotland Yard to arrest three suspects who they believe are tied to or have information about the abduction. Their supposed involvement comes from a rash of burglaries the trio committed in the area leading up to McCann’s disappearance, including two on the same block of the holiday resort of Praia da Luz where the McCanns were vacationing. Added to this is a reported increase of phone calls made between the three thieves right after her disappearance.

There is no guarantee that the Portuguese will agree to the request. Ever since the initial investigation, Portuguese authorities have been on the defensive due to intense scrutiny and criticism of their efforts stemming from reports of major investigative blunders on their part.

We are hoping the recently reopened investigation by Portuguese authorities and renewed efforts to locate the abductor(s) will deliver justice and closure, or better yet, will bring Maddy home.

Scotland Yard detectives searching for Madeleine McCann have arrived at sealed off wasteland in Portugal where police are preparing to dig.
The search site is 300 metres from the Praia da Luz apartment she vanished from and close to where a suspect was seen with a girl in his arms on the night she was abducted in May 2007.
The extensive groundwork, using radar equipment and mechanical diggers, will be the most significant police activity in years as part of renewed work to finally solve the mystery of Madeleine's disappearance.
Scotland Yard detectives arrived in Portugal late last night ahead of excavations and were driven in five vans to the hill overlooking the Atlantic.

Overnight, Portuguese police sealed off a large area of the coast in Praia‎ da Luz with official tape ahead of crucial digs.
At dawn they had parked on the top of a large area of wasteland, with officers scouring the area with large binoculars and a telescope.

Officers on foot, meanwhile, circled the area with dogs.
Met Police detectives will join with radar and digging equipment later in the day.
Local sources said more than a dozen British officers have travelled to Portugal, with technical equipment and sniffer dogs.
The gear has been brought over from the UK and will be used on a key area of wasteland, 300 metres from the Ocean Club apartments.

The site has reportedly been selected because it is in the direction of the spot where a suspect was seen walking with a little girl in his arms the night of Madeleine’s disappearance‎.
Officers will work with geologists, archaeologists and sniffer dogs to assess the land. Picks will then be used to start excavations and diggers will be brought in if they need to probe deeper underground.
When digging starts, ‎police tents are going to be used on the site to prevent the public spotting what has been found before tests are conducted.
After about two days at the site, officers are expected to excavate two other key locations in Praia da Luz.

The groundwork follows delicate negotiations between Scotland Yard and Portuguese authorities.
A police source said: 'The Policia Judiciaria has the resources needed for this work but despite this they have preferred to bring all the technical resources from England, including archeologists, sniffer dogs and a ground-penetrating radar. The Portuguese resources are pickaxes and a digger.'

The first site to be excavated is ‎the size of at least three football pitches. The ground, which used to be used to grow cabbages, is hard and covered with bushes and thick grass.

The land is said to be privately owned by a company run by Belmiror de Azevedo, a well known Portuguese entrepreneur, ranked by Forbes as the 605th richest person in the world and the 2nd richest in Portugal.
The new search operation in Praia da Luz, seven years after the disappearance of Madeleine, has provoked indignation among the local population.
One local restaurant owner in the resort said: 'There are tourists that even cancelled apartment rentals where they were going to spend holidays here when they heard about this police investigation.'

Last night, a team of British detectives were seen arriving at Faro airport, an hour away from Praia da Luz. They left by a side door after a British Airways flight from Gatwick. And are thought to have headed to a nearby hotel.
Other areas of interest include an area beside the beach and roads by the Our Lady of the Light church where Madeleine’s parents prayed after she vanished.
While British detectives instigated the new searches and will cover the costs, it is thought they will only be allowed to supervise.
Operation Grange was set up in 2011 to investigate Madeleine’s disappearance after David Cameron ordered Scotland Yard to review all the evidence in the case.
Madeleine, now 11, was three years old when she vanished. The Met Police said it was not prepared to provide a ‘running commentary’ on the inquiry‎.

Man, I am sorry but it's always seemed like what happened is the little kid died while they were out with their friends, and they got back, found her, freaked out, got rid of her, and then set this bullshit story in motion.

Yes, I've going with this as well. Got to say, I don't see why our police are over there at our cost investigating. Up to the Portuguese police to deal with the case, I'm sure there was a real reluctance from some of our Met Police lads when they were asked to pop over to a holiday resort for a few months to do some 'investigating'. They've been there ages already and now and all they've done is gone 'meh..dig that up.' Bet they've got cracking tans.

Did we link the reason for the new searches? I couldn't see anything yet, so apologies if I missed this somewhere in the thread

British police investigating Madeleine McCann's disappearance are now looking at 18 potentially linked break-ins by a lone intruder into Algarve villas.

Six have come to light since an appeal by UK detectives last month, with five involving alleged sexual assaults against young British girls.

They include an assault on a girl aged 10 in 2005 in Praia de Luz - the resort from which Madeleine vanished in 2007.

Scotland Yard says it hopes UK officers will begin operations in Portugal soon.

Last month, the Metropolitan Police revealed they were looking at a series of break-ins, including two burglaries in Praia da Luz.

More than 500 calls have been made with information since then.

Det Ch Insp Andy Redwood said: "As a result of those 500 calls, we have now identified a further five sexual assaults and one near miss. None of those six matters we were aware of prior to our appeal.

"In this new tranche of information we have got one crime which is very clearly in the heart of Praia da Luz in 2005, on a young, white, 10-year-old girl.

"Clearly the fact that we've now got an assault that is in the heart of Praia da Luz, very close to where a previous matter had been reported, means that we are even more interested in this as part of the inquiry."

    Pot-bellied intruder

The case involving the 10-year-old was not reported to police in either country until now.

Overall, nine of the 18 break-ins involved alleged sexual assaults against British girls aged six to 12.

Three took place in Praia da Luz, five in Carvoeiro, nine in Albufeira and one in Vilamoura.

Investigators from Scotland Yard are waiting for an official agreement later this week which would allow them to begin "operational activity" on Portuguese soil.

Dep Asst Commissioner Martin Hewitt said: "I am cautiously optimistic that in the not-too-distant future we are going to start to see activity."

Mr Hewitt would not reveal what the operations would involve.

Detectives said last month that the lone intruder was described as tanned with dark hair.

They said the man was bare-chested in some of the attacks, and some witnesses said he had a pot belly. Three victims said he had a "noticeable odour".

Two of the families said the intruder had worn a distinctive burgundy long-sleeved top, and one family said the top had a white circle on the back.

The man was said to have spoken English slowly, with a foreign accent.

Scotland Yard launched a new investigation - codenamed Operation Grange - into Madeleine's disappearance last July, two years into a review of the case.

A high-profile campaign run by Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann, from Rothley, Leicestershire, and a Portuguese police investigation had so far failed to locate the missing child.

Madeleine was three when she vanished from the family's holiday apartment.

Two families said the intruder had worn a distinctive burgundy long-sleeved top

    http://www.abc19.tv/madeleine-mccann...-sex-attacker/

LONDON – Detectives are investigating whether Madeleine McCann, the toddler who vanished in Portugal seven years ago, may have been abducted by a serial sex attacker.

One of the suspect’s victims was a 10-year-old girl who was assaulted in 2005 in the same resort where Madeleine went missing.

Scotland Yard has recently learned for the first time of five sexual assaults, and one attempted sexual assault, on British girls between 2004 and 2006. Police say they attach particular significance to one of the attacks: the sexual assault in 2005 of a British 10-year-old girl in Praia de Luz, the resort where Madeleine’s family were staying. That attack was not reported at the time.

McCann was 3 when she vanished from the family’s resort room in 2007 while her parents dined nearby.

These latest cases were brought to police attention after a public appeal for information last month.

Senior investigating officer Andy Redwood calls the new leads “extremely positive” and a “priority” for his investigation. Scotland Yard have requested case files for the six attacks from Portuguese police.

The British investigation is now examining 18 cases where a male intruder entered the apartments and villas of British vacationers in the Western Algarve region of Portugal. They include nine sexual assaults and three “near-misses,” officials said. The victims were all British girls aged between 6 and 12 years old. Fourteen of the attacks were reported to the police at the time.

Detective Chief Inspector Redwood says he is confident that some if not all of the cases are linked because of their “significant similarities.”

In order to protect the identities of the victims, police are not disclosing why some of the attacks were not reported earlier. While some of the attacks were known to police in Portugal, they were not considered relevant by them to the McCann case because they didn’t involve abduction.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Martin Hewitt says he is “cautiously optimistic” that police in Portugal will soon move forward with Scotland Yard’s requests for help.

Senior British detectives have expressed frustration with the slow pace of the judicial process, and the cooperation they have received from their Portuguese counterparts.

Portuguese authorities have resisted British requests to form a joint investigation team.

In March police appealed for help regarding 12 cases of a male intruder entering vacation homes between 2004 and 2010. The man sexually assaulted five British girls aged between 7 and 10 in their beds.

They said that witnesses described the suspect as tanned, with short untidy hair. He spoke in English with a foreign accident, and smelled strongly.

Scotland Yard has still not established the identity of a man seen by three witnesses carrying a child fitting Madeleine’s description on the night that she disappeared

Body found in hotel room thought to be of woman accused of McCann trolling

Brenda Leyland was confronted by TV reporter over claims she sent abuse on Twitter about Madeleine McCann’s disappearance

A body, believed to be that of a woman accused of trolling the family of missing schoolgirl Madeleine McCann online, was found in a hotel room in Leicester on Saturday, police have said.

Brenda Leyland, 63, was confronted by a television news reporter over the claim that she used Twitter to post a series of comments attacking the McCanns , whose daughter disappeared in Portugal in 2007.

She was said to have left her home after the exchange last week about the claims. But no direct link can be made between the incident and her death, which officers said was not being treated as suspicious.

On Facebook, her son Ben Leyland wrote: “I love you mum and I will miss you forever.”

In an earlier exchange on the site, Ms Leyland wrote that her son was “the loveliest son and nicest person” she had ever met, asking, “How lucky am I?”

He responded: “I’d say pretty lucky, but then again, who’d have expected anything less of my mother’s son?!”

In a report aired on Sky News last Wednesday, Ms Leyland was accused of being one of dozens of people to have aimed online attacks at Kate and Gerry McCann. She was confronted as she was getting into her car by Sky News’ crime correspondent Martin Brunt, who asked her why she had done so.

Initially reluctant to answer, she eventually responded with “I’m entitled to”. It was claimed she used her Twitter account – using the alias “sweepyface” – to send abuse to the family.

When she was told that a file of evidence had been passed to the police, she said: “That’s fair enough.”

Later, Leyland invited the reporter into her home and, off-camera, explained that she “had questions for the McCanns” but “hoped she hadn’t broken the law” in her online posts.

In the Sky report, she was said not to be the worst of the alleged online abusers.

The next day, neighbours said they believed she had fled the small village in rural Leicestershire, where she has lived for nearly 15 years.

A neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Leicester Mercury: “Somebody took a photo of [Ms Leyland] on Thursday afternoon and then she was gone. I haven’t seen her since.” Others said they feared for her safety after it became apparent she had fled.

According to Sky News, the Metropolitan police said it was investigating claims of online abuse sent to the McCanns.

The force wrote to those accused of sending the messages: “in consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service and the McCann family, the material will now be assessed and decisions made” as to what further action if any should be undertaken.”

A Leicestershire police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 1.42pm on Saturday 4 October to reports of a body of a woman in a hotel room in Smith Way, Grove Park.

“Officers have attended the scene and a file is being prepared for the coroner. Identification of the deceased is a matter for the coroner.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious.”

I'm confused about the backlash against journalists who "hounded" her to death. All I can find is mention of a quick doorstep interview a few days earlier. They even said she wasn't the worst. If they call that hounding, what do they call her own actions toward the McCann's? She did this obsessively everyday for YEARS.

I don't get it? Or is it just the most rabid of the anti-McCann crew freaking out?

A convicted child sex attacker on the run in Malta is being being deported to the UK and could face questioning in connection with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Roderick McDonald, 76, was reportedly living in the Algarve at the same time as Madeleine McCann's disappearance in 2007.

He was apprehended in Malta after being on the run since 2012 following his conviction for abusing two girls.

It is understood the Met want to speak to him regarding a possible paedophile ring which could have been operating in the Algarve when Madeleine vanished from her holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, aged three, according to reports.

McDonald, who also uses the surname Robinson, had been living in an apartment in Ta Cenc, Gozo, Malta and agreed to be extradited when he appeared before Magistrates this week.
    *
Scotland Yard detectives chasing new leads in Praia da Luz where Madeleine went missing wanted to quiz him about paedophile rings in the area in 2007 at the time of Madeleine's disappearance.

Police have reportedly been investigating 18 possible linked break-ins at Algarve villas by a lone intruder from 2004 to 2010.

McDondald, of Aldershot, Hants, was reportedly deported from Portugal to Australia in 2010 accused of raping an eight-year-old girl.

The incident happened in 1989 and while on bail he fled to New Zealand until an international arrest warrant saw him arrested in a campsite in the Algarve in 2010.

He served a six month sentence in Australia for indecent assault and then went to Thailand in 2011 where the authorities deported him back to the UK after learning of his convictions.

The former oil rig worker moved to Brighton, where he was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register, and he then targeted two sisters, aged five and seven, in June 2012.

He fled abroad prior to his sentence and was handed a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years in his absence.

He is wanted in the UK for absconding after being found guilty of sexual assault, and for failing to notify the authorities he had changed his name, address and was going abroad.

In court in Malta he agreed to be extradited and has been remanded in custody.

Madeleine disappeared during a family holiday in Portugal as her parents Kate and Gerry were eating in a near-by restaurant

A European Arrest Warrant had been issued against him on April 25, 2013, by the Lewes Crown Court in East Sussex

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said they would never discuss who they wanted to speak to as part of any investigation.

If it was him both identikts were a complete fail

A convicted paedophile wanted for questioning in relation to the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann is also wanted on child molestation charges in New Zealand, police have confirmed.

Roderick Macdonald, 76, was reportedly living in Portugal's Algarve region when 3-year-old Madeleine disappeared in 2007.

Police say he is the subject of active arrest warrants in New Zealand. The warrants relate to offences alleged to have happened in 2009.

Macdonald is wanted on at least two charges of indecent assault on a girl aged under 12.

He is also wanted for failing to appear in court, and a charge under the Passport Act.

Warrants for his arrest were issued at Auckland, Hamilton, and Waitakere district courts.

He was known in New Zealand as Roderick Robinson, police said.

He changed his name to Macdonald after being convicted of child sex offences in the UK, British newspaper the Telegraph reported.

Macdonald was caught in Malta this week after four years on the run following a conviction for abusing two girls in Brighton in the UK.

New Zealand police said they'd been in contact with British law enforcement agencies in recent weeks.

Macdonald was reportedly deported from Portugal to Australia in 2010 to face charges of raping an 8-year-old girl in 1989. While on bail, he fled to New Zealand.

He was then arrested in New Zealand for child sex offences. He was granted bail after surrendering his passport but used a stolen passport to fly to Portugal, Radio New Zealand reported.

He was arrested in the Algarve in 2010 on an international arrest warrant, the Telegraph reported.

Macdonald served a six-month sentence in Australia for indecent assault.

He then moved to Brighton, where in June 2012 he was accused of abusing two sisters, aged 5 and 7. He was convicted, but fled before sentencing.

He is now wanted in the UK for absconding, and for failing to notify authorities he had changed his name, his address and was going abroad.

Macdonald was remanded in custody this week in Malta to be deported to Britain and re-sentenced.

British detectives want to question Macdonald about paedophile rings in the area where Madeleine went missing.

Detectives are reportedly looking into 18 possibly linked break-ins at Algarve villas by a lone intruder from 2004 to 2010, the Telegraph said.

Sounds more promising than any previous leads. I fear poor little Maddie is long gone, but I'd love to see this case solved. Her parents have suffered long enough.

I read another article that said he was one of the hundreds of persons 'looked at' in the early days of the investigation, but I don't know why they eliminated him. It's easy to make mistakes in an investigation with this much publicity and public pressure, but IMO the Portugese police have been horribly incompetent throughout this entire investigation. They would have dropped this case a long time ago if it weren't for the McCann's unrelenting pressure to solve it.

I'm actually super excited whether they can finally close this case or not. Just the other day I talked about it to my boyfriend and said I don't believe the parents killed Maddie because they've put so much money, energy and effort into the search for their daughter, who would have done this after all those years? If they had killed her they would have probably declared her dead after a few years and that's that.

Absolutely. If they were any way involved in her disappearance, they would have quietly faded into the background, relieved they got away with it. The McCanns have done just the opposite. A friend of ours knows the McCanns through their work with missing persons in the UK, and say they are absolutely tireless in their efforts to find Madeleine. I hope they get answers soon, they've waited long enough.
