    For her search. Yeah. Okay.
But then again, I was convinced that Elizabeth Smart was dead, too.

    Re: Madeleine McCann

The parents of Madeleine McCann are in talks to turn the story of their missing four-year-old daughter into a film.

Kate and Gerry McCann, who have launched an unprecedented media campaign over Madeleine, are in negotiations with the talent and entertainment agency, IMG, in a deal which could be worth millions, the Evening Standard newspaper in London reported.

The money would help fund the continuing search for Madeleine amid fears that the £1.2 million ($2.7 million) raised from public donations will soon run out.

The little girl disappeared from the bedroom of a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, on the Algarve in Portugal, on May 3 last year.

While her parents insist that she was abducted, Portuguese police have named the parents official suspects in the ongoing investigations.

The Madeleine Fund set up by the parents is paying £50,000 a month to a Spanish private detective agency employed to look for Madeleine as well as financing a massive poster and television advertising campaign in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

It is estimated that at least £500,000 has already been spent.

"We would only get involved with something done sensitively and considerately," a source close to the McCann's said.

This seems really tasteless on the part of the parents.  What next, action figures from Hasbro and Buger King collectible cups???  How is this film going to end????  They don't even know in real life!

The McCanns are denying the movie rumours.

Last Updated: Wednesday, 9 January 2008, 09:56 GMT

    Madeleine film reports dismissed

Madeleine McCann's parents have denied reports they are planning to make a film about her disappearance.

Writing on his online blog, Madeleine's father Gerry McCann said speculation about a film deal was "simply untrue".

However, he did confirm there had been talks with a production company about making a documentary on the couple.

He said projects were assessed to see if they could help find Madeleine, who disappeared in Portugal, just before her fourth birthday, last May.

Writing on his blog on Tuesday, Mr McCann said: "Some of the media coverage today has been at its worst since Kate and I were declared arguidos [formal suspects].

"We can categorically deny that we are considering a movie about Madeleine's disappearance. This is simply untrue.

"We are approached by a huge number of media outlets regarding a myriad of projects, only a tiny proportion of which we agree to.

"Each proposal is considered on whether it is likely to have a positive effect, either directly or indirectly on the search for Madeleine."

The media are making money out of the situation themselves and we feel it is only fair and right that some aspect of that should come to the fund to help find Madeleine
    Clarence Mitchell

He added that there had been a "preliminary discussion" with a production company about a documentary on the issues the family had faced since the disappearance of their daughter.

The McCann's spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said on Tuesday that there had been a meeting in December with the IMG film company, the firm behind the award-winning documentary Touching The Void.

He said the McCanns themselves had not attended the meeting, which discussed the possibility of making their daughter's disappearance into either a film or a TV drama.

Mr Mitchell said: "The media are making money out of the situation themselves and we feel it is only fair and right that some aspect of that should come to the fund to help find Madeleine.

"In this case we have had one meeting before Christmas. It was between myself, one other person and representatives from IMG."

Images of Madeleine McCann suspect revealed
    Last Updated: 2:54pm GMT 20/01/2008

Two sketches of a man who police want to contact over the abduction of Madeleine McCann has been revealed.

A police artist drew the likenesses after the News of the World tracked down a holidaymaker who reported seeing a "creepy man" hanging around the apartments in Praia da Luz, Portugal, prior to the abduction on May 3 last year.

The man was spotted loitering on the beach at Praia da Luz

The photofits show a man with long hair, bushy eyebrows and a moustache.

Gail Cooper, 50, who was staying in the complex gave a description to an FBI-trained artist of what she called "a creepy man".

Mrs Cooper told the paper: "He was wandering about on the beach alone even though it was pouring down with rain. There wasn't another soul about. I watched him for a few minutes before I went back to chatting to my friends."

She said later that day the man knocked on the door of her apartment claiming to be collecting money for a local orphanage.

"He flashed what he said was an identity card, but it could have been anything," she said.

"The man was rambling and becoming agitated. He really unnerved me even though my two grown-up daughters and two grandchildren were with me. I thought he was a conman trying to pull a fast one."

Two days later Mrs Cooper saw the same man hanging around a children's outing to the beach organised by the Mark Warner resort. Madeleine took part in the same outings in the days leading up to her disappearance.

The McCanns' friend Jane Tanner - who gave a description to police of someone she spotted carrying a child from the Algarve resort on the night Madeleine vanished - told the paper the new picture resembled the man she saw.

The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the image had been passed to police.

He added: "We urgently need to know who this man is and where he is.

"For Madeleine's sake, we urge anyone with any information about him to come forward right away."

The McCanns want a worldwide search for the man

Mr Mitchell said Mrs Cooper's information had been with the police for some time, but they had not produced an artist's impression. "We're not going to criticise the police in any form - they have got a difficult enough job," he said.

"It seems drawings of this sort are not done as a matter of course in Portugal."

Mr Mitchell stressed that the new drawings were entirely independent of the one done last year, and said Mrs Cooper had not seen the first drawing.

He said the McCann team had drawn up an action plan for how they wanted the investigation to proceed.

First, they want a worldwide search for the man, co-ordinated by a central telephone number manned by their private detective agency to identify and locate the man in the sketches.

All information would be passed on to the Portuguese police. Second, they want a full review of all police records and witness statements, including one taken from a 12-year-old girl who reported sightings of a strange man in the Portuguese resort in May last year.

Third he called for complete collaboration between the Portuguese police, Interpol and the authorities in Spain, Morocco and Britain. Since Madeleine's disappearance, only three people have been named as official suspects: Kate and Gerry McCann, Madeleine's parents, and British expatriate Robert Murat.

Within minutes of the close of the press conference, Mr Mitchell had taken a call from a British man who believes he saw the man in the sketches in the Portuguese resort of Faro several years ago.

Mr Mitchell said developments such as this gave Mr and Mrs McCann renewed hope.

"That is exactly the sort of call we want. We think the image is of such a quality that anyone who knows him will be able to identify him," he said.

"Kate and Gerry are quite buoyant at the moment - every time we do something like this and move things forward it gives them strength."

    http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23250432-2,00.html

A DUTCH teenager says she saw missing British girl Madeleine McCann alive in a roadside restaurant in France last week.

Melissa Firing, 18, told De Gelderlander newspaper she saw Maddie, 4, at L'Arche restaurant on a highway near the French city of Montpellier on February 15.

She said the child reacted when she called out her name but was quickly whisked away by a man.

Maddie went missing on May 3 last year from her familiy's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal'.

Ms Firing, from Nijmegen in the Netherlands, told the paper she was sure the girl she saw was Madeleine because of the way she reacted when she called out her name, and because she was able to look her in the eyes.

An adult man accompanying the child took her and left the restaurant quickly afterward, Ms Firing said.

Police said they had taken Ms Firing's claim seriously but had now discounted it, the Associated Press reported.

After viewing closed-circuit video footage, police investigators spotted a man and a young girl who indeed resembled the British girl, but determined it was not Maddie after a thorough inspection, an unnamed official said.

Kate and Gerry McCann cleared over Madeleine disappearance

The parents of Madeleine McCann said that there was no cause for celebration after they were cleared by the Portuguese authorities yesterday, 14 months after the disappearance of their daughter.

After the investigation was shelved, Gerry and Kate McCann described their “utter despair” at being named as suspects. The Portuguese police announced that they had lifted the arguido (suspect) status from the couple and were shelving the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance from the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz in May last year.

The arguido status was also lifted from Robert Murat, the British property developer living in Portugal who was the first man to be named as a suspect.

I'm glad it didnt take years and years to clear those parents.

How interesting the new (ok after re-reading that, it's old news) news about the possible Madeleine sighting.  It'd be quite amazing if she is found, alive and well.  I just hope she wasn't sold to somebody.

The McCanns are hoping that them being cleared will help to find Madeline.  Previously they were never allowed access to any information regarding the search or leads.  That ban is being lifted and they will be able to find out what has and hasn't been investigated.  They are hoping that it will give them some new leads to follow up.

    Re: Madeleine McCann

I know this thread is old and alot of people still blame the McCanns but since the legal files have been released alot of info has come out (wrongly i believe as letting all out may hinder a future prosecution)

Since the McCanns sued quite a few papers for liable and won, same with Robert (the other suspect) they all seem to be on their side. No longer "They killed their daughter storys" its now "Poor them having the case messed up by the police."

I still think the McCanns should be charged with some sort of abuse charge for leaving these 3 kids but if some one did take her i guess that could harm the case. I think she is dead.

    Re: Madeleine McCann

Can we go back now? (Video may show missing British girl Madeleine McCann)

    By LUCY HAGAN

A LITTLE girl who cops suspect could be Madeleine McCann asked a woman she was seen walking with, “Can we go back now?” it emerged last night.

The poignant plea in English was overheard by a bank security guard in Brussels, Belgium — and he is convinced the kiddie was missing Maddie.

The Securitas guard became suspicious and ran out of the KBC bank branch last Monday after spotting the pair on monitors linked to CCTV cameras covering the street.
Tapes were last night being studied by police — and footage obtained by The Sun has been passed to Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry to see if they recognise the child.
    Seized

The guard told detectives the blonde blue-eyed girl looked just like Maddie, who was nearly four when she vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Portugal on May 3 last year.

She was with a woman the man did not believe was her mother because they were very unalike.

He heard the girl say: “Can we go back now?”

The dark-skinned woman, wearing a hijab headdress, spoke in a different language, possibly broken French.

Police interviewed the guard, who speaks fluent Flemish, Dutch and English, on Thursday.

They also seized film from five closed-circuit cameras.
Footage first shows the girl being led along a quiet street named Ulensstraat, in the run- down immigrant area of Molenbeek. The pair are heading towards the Vergotedok canal.

The back view shows the mystery woman is dressed in black trousers, a white coat and a black headscarf.

The child has a fringe like Madeleine’s.

She has on a white jumper with a pink waistband, a pink tartan skirt and beige boots.

The bank security guard can be seen coming out of the building. He watches them reach the end of the street and follows.

A second camera then films the pair from the front in the Avenue du Port.

The woman is North African or Arabic with thick black eyebrows. She has on a patterned black top and white shoes and appears to be pregnant.

Camera three sees them turn on to a main road. They walk slowly and stop and start. The woman briefly lets go of the girl’s hand to check her mobile.

They then passed out of view of cameras — but the guard saw them pause briefly at the canal. The woman said something and they retraced their steps.

A fourth camera shows the girl wriggle and pull at the adult’s hand with both hers.

The woman crouches to speak to her. Final images show the guard watching them pass again.

The girl turns her head and takes a long look at him.

A source said: “The guard thought something weird was going on and noted the time. When he saw a photo of Maddie next day, he was sure it was her and called the police.”

The Sun first revealed the alleged sighting on Saturday.

McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said last night: “We’re extremely grateful to The Sun for providing the footage. It is potentially very significant.

“Kate and Gerry have seen the material. It is being enhanced as a priority in the United States.”

Brussels police decided the CCTV was a strong lead and passed it to federal cops on Friday.

Portuguese files made public last month contained 107 reports linking Maddie with Belgium and Holland.

Scotland Yard asked Belgian cops to investigate if Maddie was snatched by a paedophile ring in their country.

Kate and Gerry, both 40, of Rothley, Leics, were official suspects in Maddie’s disappearance until last month but have always said she was abducted.

New suspect emerges in Madeleine McCann search

Fri May 22, 3:11 am ET

LONDON (AFP) – Investigators probing the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal have identified a paedophile as a possible suspect, press reports and a spokesman for the girl's parents have said.

    Raymond Hewlett
, a 64-year-old Briton, was reportedly living near the resort of Praia da Luz when three-year-old Madeleine went missing in May 2007, The Daily Mail said.

A spokesman for Kate and Gerry McCann, who launched a global media search for their daughter, confirmed in a statement that Hewlett was "of interest" to investigators working for the couple.

"We are aware of Raymond Hewlett and the claims that have been made about him in some newspapers," spokesman Clarence Mitchell said.

"The investigators searching for Madeleine are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding these claims.

"Mr Hewlett is an individual of interest to the Madeleine investigation but I would stress it is just one line of inquiry. Beyond that I can't really go into any further operational detail."

Convicted paedophile talks for the first time about Maddie investigation, but says he did not kill her.

Hewlett, who has been in hiding ever since he was named in connection with the case, admits he was in the Algarve at the time Madeleine was snatched and, as our pictures show, that he looks strikingly similar to a sketch of a suspect with a pock-marked face seen lurking around the apartment.

And five weeks after she disappeared, he left Portugal for Morocco for a two-month-long “business trip”.

There, he told Peter Verran, a tourist he had befriended, that he’d become obsessed with the case and he admitted being outside the McCanns’ holiday flat in Praia da Luz “many times” and parking his van close to the complex.

What’s more he is refusing to give an alibi for the night Madeleine, three, vanished.

“I have an alibi but why should I share it?” he says, struggling for air with each syllable.

    Re: Madeleine McCann

The search for Madeleine McCann last night switched to Australia as detectives began hunting for a new suspect.
A witness has given Kate and Gerry McCann's private detectives fresh information about an Australian man they believe could be linked to Madeleine's disappearance.

The investigators believe the man is of 'potential significance' to their hunt and will today make a dramatic public appeal for help to find him.
They are expected to release images of the man and information about his possible link to the two-year search for Madeleine.

Dave Edgar, one of two retired detectives hired by the McCanns to co-ordinate the hunt, is to due make the appeal at a press conference in London.
McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: 'We want the public's help to identify someone. We are making an appeal based on new information.' He refused to give further details.

Madeleine vanished from her family's rented holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, while her parents dined with friends at a nearby restaurant.

She has not been seen since, despite a series of appeals from her parents, who have vowed never to give up the search.

In June Mr Edgar, flew to Germany after convicted paedophile Raymond Hewlett was linked to the case.
Hewlett, 64, was in Portugal when Madeleine vanished but refused to speak to Mr Edgar or his colleague Arthur Cowley about the disappearance.
He has denied he was involved in Madeleine's suspected abduction but refused to provide an alibi or tell the detectives where he was when she vanished.

The McCanns, of Rothley, Leicestershire, have said they will believe Madeleine is alive and can be found unless they are shown clear evidence to the contrary. Portuguese police closed their investigation a year ago.
