Investigators have ruled out DeAngelo as a suspect in the 1975 murder of 14-year-old Donna Jo Richmond based on DNA evidence, according to a press statement from the Tulare County District Attorney’s office. Investigators are still seeking to determine whether he can be linked to other crimes from that time.

Prosecutors are standing by the conviction of Oscar Clifton for murdering Richmond while she was riding her bike near Exeter, California, on Dec. 26, 1975.

Clifton, who always maintained his innocence, was sentenced to life in prison and died in 2013.

“We feel that Mr. Clifton received a fair trial and that the evidence more than sufficiently points to his guilt,” Ward said in a televised statement on Tuesday.

The District Attorney’s conviction review report, reviewed by Reuters, said a DNA profile developed in 2011 from a sample found on Richmond’s body does not match DeAngelo’s genetic profile, clearing him of suspicion.

The man accused of being the Golden State Killer is willing to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence, according to court records.

The offer was revealed in a motion filed in Sacramento County Superior Court on Monday by Joseph DeAngelo’s attorneys in the Sacramento County Public Defender’s Office. DeAngelo, 74, faces 13 counts of murder and 13 counts of kidnapping with robbery in connection with a 1970s and 1980s crime spree that spanned Sacramento, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Tulare, Orange and Contra Costa counties.

Special circumstance allegations including murder during the commission of rape and burglary made DeAngelo eligible for the death penalty, which the prosecution has decided to seek.

But Jen Carole, the daughter and stepdaughter of a married Ventura couple found slain in 1980, wondered what exactly DeAngelo is willing to plead guilty to.

She said she isn’t happy that the news of DeAngelo’s reported offer was made public, arguing it might be a way for a jury pool to become tainted. It also might be a way DeAngelo’s team is trying to control the narrative, Carole said.

She said she received a letter from DeAngelo’s public defenders asking about how she feels about alternatives to trial as way to “hopefully provide closure,” the letter states.

“Our goal is to resolve the case in a manner that satisfies all parties, and we want you involved in the conversation,” according to the letter.

Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., the man prosecutors say is the prolific and ruthless Golden State Killer, will reportedly plead guilty to 88 charges in exchange for life in prison, the Sacramento Bee reported Monday.

DeAngelo, 74, is facing the death penalty if convicted in the murders of 13 individuals in five California counties. But sources told The Bee that DeAngelo — barring a change due to his "unpredictable nature" — will plead guilty at a hearing on June 29 in order to receive life in prison instead.

He is currently facing over two dozen charges in the Sacramento Superior Court, which means some 60 more charges would be added.

He never would have been put to death, and it would have cost a lot of money, although he may have died before appeals were finished. I think that he needs to stand up and admit guilt to each and every case. My only concern is him getting off on it the way that Dennis Rader got off on telling his crimes in court.

Admitting his crimes, not telling. Rader relived his crimes and was physically affected... If you know what I mean.

The suspected Golden State Killer, Joseph James DeAngelo, has pleaded guilty to one of the murder charges against him.

DeAngelo, 74, faces a number of charges, including 13 counts of first-degree murder. At an ongoing hearing, a Sacramento judge is going through each charge now and asking DeAngelo for his plea.

DeAngelo is expected to plead guilty the all of the charges.

A hearing for suspected Golden State Killer Joseph DeAngelo started about three hours ago, and it will resume later this afternoon after a lunch break.

DeAngelo — who was arrested in April 2018, decades after the California crime spree — has agreed to plead guilty to each individual crime, prosecutors and his defense team said.

That means prosecutors from the counties where DeAngelo committed his crimes are reading the specifics of each offense, laying out horrific details about him binding, robbing, raping, sodomizing, beating and killing various victims. After each of the crimes is described, he's pleading.

By the time the lengthy hearing concludes later today, he will have pleaded guilty to 13 counts of first-degree murder and special circumstances (including murder committed during burglaries and rapes), as well as 13 counts of kidnapping, the prosecution said.

He will also informally admit to numerous other crimes, it said.

When he was arrested I was shocked, he lived on the same street my husband did growing up (we almost moved into that house in 2013, we would've been neighbors). His house was down the street from my kid's school!
