Prosecutors aim to keep missing Unity woman's acquaintance jailed
Westmoreland County prosecutors on Wednesday filed court documents aimed at keeping the acquaintance of a missing Unity woman in jail.

Thomas George Stanko, 57, is in the county jail after being unable to post bail on unrelated charges filed against him in the last week.
Wednesday's court filing seeks to revoke Stanko's pretrial release for simple assault charges filed against him in 2017. Police arrested Stanko for punching a man at The Tin Lizzy bar in Youngstown, knocking out several of the victims' false teeth, according to court paperwork.

Stanko was jailed last week on $100,000 bond after police charged him with possession of a stolen ATV found on his property. He is scheduled to appear before District Judge Michael Mahady on Monday for a preliminary hearing.

Stanko also was charged with weapons offenses after police found 28 guns at his mother's home, including two that were reported as stolen. Police found the guns as they searched his home as part of an investigation into Glass' whereabouts.

Shrager has said he believes those guns were mostly owned by Stanko's deceased father.

Police said Stanko was barred from owning any firearms as part of a plea deal stemming from a 1993 case in which he was charged with shooting at a former state police trooper's home in Latrobe. Stanko pleaded guilty in 1995 to retaliation and intimidation against a witness and was sentenced to serve 14 1⁄2 to 29 months in prison.

According to court documents, Assistant District Attorney Pete Flanigan said Stanko's pretrial release for last year's simple assault arrest should be revoked because of the two new criminal charges filed against him. Stanko had been free on $500 unsecured bail in that case.

Stanko is scheduled to appear Thursday morning before Mahady for an arraignment on the weapons charges.

Gross' family warns of scammer trying to profit off missing woman case

Gross’ cousin posted a warning about a possible scammer trying to capitalize on the missing persons case. The scammer said Gross was kidnapped and being held for ransom, and the poster left a phone number to text right away.

“It’s a scammer asking for $2,000 in random to be sent via Western Union claiming this is what they do, kidnap people and that they have 9 people someplace... this is disgusting and I hope the police find them,” she said in an online post.

Channel 11 talked to investigators involved with Cassandra’s case. They told us they’re looking into the situation.

State police confirmed Monday morning that they were searching Unity Cemetery in Latrobe for anything related to the disappearance of Cassandra Gross.

"We were at part of the cemetery, and then the adjacent areas around it, and the reason why we're here so long is it's very dense, the terrain that we're searching through, so it's hard to say a specific region, but those are some of the areas we're focusing on," Trooper Stephen Limani said.

It was not immediately clear why investigators were concentrating their efforts at the cemetery.

"There's obviously reasons why we came here and started to search these areas, but obviously I'm not able to expand on those reasons," Limani said.

Family and friends of Cassandra Gross plan to gather for a rally Saturday, nearly six months since the Unity woman went missing.

They will sell bracelets with “Bring Cassie Home” on them to raise money for billboards, banners and yard signs with her picture that have popped up around the area.

“We’re just trying to call attention to the fact that Cassie’s still missing. It’s going to be six months soon,” said Emily Kelly, a family friend.

Her mother Kathe Gross has passed along several tips she’s gotten this summer on to state police, but she is frustrated that they haven’t found her. Family and friends are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Cassandra Gross’ whereabouts and her mother has been accepting information by phone at 724-539-9553. Tipsters can remain confidential.

Police have charged the estranged boyfriend of a Westmoreland County woman who went missing in April with conspiracy to commit forgery.

Thomas Stanko, who is currently incarcerated at the county prison on charges unrelated to the disappearance of Cassandra Gross, allegedly told his mother, Almira, to use his ACCESS card in order to take advantage of $1,200 in state food stamp funds, according to a criminal complaint.

He allegedly gave her the PIN to the card during a call from the jail, according to the complaint.

Almira Stanko, who is charged with forgery, allegedly went to the Giant Eagle in Ligonier on Oct. 30 to make a small purchase to see if the card worked, but was denied, according to the complaint.

Missing woman Cassandra Gross’ family asks judge to declare her legally dead

Cassandra Gross, missing since spring, still has not been found, but her family wants her to be legally declared dead.

A hearing is set for January to consider the request filed by Gross’ son, Brandon Diebold of North Carolina. Gross, who would have turned 52 in May, was last seen April 7.

If a Westmoreland County judge approves the motion, it would allow Diebold access to the funds in Gross’ credit union account and 401(k). The Unity woman did not have a will.

If someone is declared dead, the administrator of that person’s estate would have access to the assets left behind and other rights, said attorney Ken Burkley, who spoke generally about the process and is not involved in Gross’ case.

“The administrator would be acting in the place of the decedent,” Burkley explained.

Gross’ parents reported her missing April 9 — the same day her blind and diabetic dog, Baxter, was found alone in the Beatty Crossroads area.

The next day, her burned red 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander was spotted by Norfolk Southern employees in a wooded area along train tracks near Twin Lakes Park. Authorities have been seen this year searching near Unity Cemetery and on two Unity properties owned by Thomas G. Stanko, 48, who is being held in the Westmoreland County Prison on unrelated charges. One of those properties abuts the cemetery on White Fence Lane, where Stanko’s mother lives.

Gross’ family believes she was killed. No arrests have been made. Police continue to investigate.

Family and friends of Cassandra Gross gathered at the Unity Cemetary to make one last search in a wooded area for her missing body.

The search would take them near the home of her estranged boyfriend, Thomas Stanko.

“She wants found and she wants buried with her brother and I’m going to find her,” said Kathe Gross, Cassandra’s mother.

Gross disappeared in April 2018 and a day later, police found her burned-out car in Hempfield Township.

Authorities could never connect the murder to Stanko.

He is in jail on unrelated charges.

Kathe Gross remembers Cassandra’s tumultuous relationship with Stanko.

“He stalked her for nine months,” she said. “I even went after him twice when I caught him and it didn’t help.”

State Police have searched the same area including Stanko’s property but never found any sign of Cassandra.

Since then, a judge has declared her legally dead.

Kathe Gross says police are still working hard and it’s just a matter of time before an arrest.

“They’re gathering all the evidence they have and getting it all together, dotting their Is an crossing their Ts and when that’s done, it’ll happen,” she said.
