Elaine Herzberg, 49, was walking her bicycle outside the crosswalk on a four-lane road in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe about 10 p.m. MST Sunday (0400 GMT Monday) when she was struck by the Uber vehicle traveling at about 40 miles per hour (65 km per hour), police said. The car was in autonomous mode with an operator behind the wheel.

Herzberg later died from her injuries in a hospital, police said.

Yeah... this wasn't the first fatality caused by an autonomous car.

I would never personally ever trust a car driven on autopilot. You could fall asleep and end up in Heaven or Hell.
Also, if there was a driver behind the wheel, why didn't he brake?! Did he not see the woman?
Too many idiots I assume depend on the autopilot car to correct itself in the last second.

I'm actually rooting for this car. Imagine how many lives would be saved seeing as how car accidents are one of the leading causes of death in America. I trust Robots over drunk drivers. But they need to be developed and as close to perfected as possible before they can be trusted. I still think they'd lessen the deaths.

I'm Team Ron on this one. Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have it right about AI in my opinion.

That video, it couldn't have been avoided. Even if he were at the wheel instead of the car driving itself, he would have hit her and he wouldn't have been at fault. It was dark, and was wearing dark clothing and she wasn't in a cross walk or even an intersection. WTF was she thinking? It's as if she didn't even look to see if a car was coming.

His reaction is heartbreaking. He must feel so horrible.

Ohhhh, it's a case of idiot pedestrian. Totally different.

But people will still eventually make it seem like the car jumped the curb, tortured her cat, then hunted and killed her immediate family.

They really need to start making Uber self-walking pedestrians to combat this problem.

Based on that video, I completely disagree and that's coming from someone that almost always sides with the Pedestrian.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/18/cars/...ged/index.html

The Uber test driver who was responsible for monitoring one of the company's self-driving cars that hit and killed a pedestrian in 2018 was charged with negligent homicide this week.
